JERUSALEM — A leading Israeli university says it will present singer Barbra Streisand with an honorary Ph.D. when she visits Israel next month.

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem said Monday it was granting the singer the degree because of her concern for human rights and dedication to Israel and the Jewish people.

Streisand, 71, is expected to perform at a June conference in honor of the 90th birthday of Israeli President Shimon Peres. She will also appear in two public concerts. It will be the first time the Jewish singer performs in Israel.

The university's school of Jewish studies, established in 1984, is named after Streisand's father, Emanuel. State Dept: Reports of anti-Semitism increase

WASHINGTON (AP) - The State Department appointed a special envoy to monitor and combat anti-Semitism Monday as a new report documents a global increase in incidents of anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial.

Ira Forman, former CEO of the National Jewish Democratic Council, was named special envoy as the State Department released its annual report on religious freedom around the world. Forman replaces Michael Kozak, who had served in an acting role after Hannah Rosenthal stepped down last year.

The 2012 report on religious freedom said expressions of anti-Semitism by government officials, religious leaders were of great concern, particularly in Venezuela, Egypt and Iran. At times, such statements led to desecration and violence, the report said.

"When political leaders condoned anti-Semitism, it set the tone for its persistence and growth in countries around the world," the report said.

In Venezuela, government-controlled media published numerous anti-Semitic statements, particularly in regard to opposition presidential candidate Henrique Capriles, a Catholic with Jewish ancestors, the report said.

In Egypt, anti-Semitic sentiment in the media was widespread and sometimes included Holocaust denial or glorification, the report said. The report cited an Oct. 19 incident in which Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi said "Amen" after a religious leader stated, "Oh Allah, destroy the Jews and their supporters."

The Iranian government regularly vilified Judaism, and vandals in Ukraine desecrated several Holocaust memorials, the report said. Vandals in Russia painted a swastika on a fence at a St. Petersburg synagogue and on a synagogue wall in Irkutsk.

"Even well into the 21st century, traditional forms of anti-Semitism, such as conspiracy theories, use of the discredited myth of "blood libel" and cartoons demonizing Jews continued to flourish," the report said. :p

Secretary of State John Kerry called the report a "clear-eyed, objective look at the state of religious freedom around the world," and said that in some cases, the report "does directly call out some of our close friends, as well as some countries with whom we seek stronger ties."

Kerry called the report an attempt to make progress around the world, "even though we know that it may cause some discomfort."

When countries undermine or attack religious freedom, "they not only unjustly threaten those whom they target, they also threaten their countries' own stability," Kerry said at a news conference, calling religious freedom a basic human right. Kerry urged countries identified in the report to take action to safeguard religious freedoms.

Besides anti-Semitism, the report also notes frequent government restrictions on religion and policies that make it hard for citizens to choose or practice their faith.

"Governments that repress freedom of religion and freedom of expression typically create a climate of intolerance and impunity that emboldens those who foment hatred and violence within society," the report said, singling out China, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Cuba, among other countries, for criticism.

The report also cites the use of blasphemy laws to harass, detain and abuse government critics, especially in the Middle East and North Africa. In Saudi Arabia, the report cited incidents in which activists were arrested and charged with apostasy and blasphemy, offenses that carry potential death penalties.

Kerry, who took office earlier this year after incidents highlighted in the report took place, thanked a "broad spectrum" of faith leaders, religious organizations and journalists who participated in the report, many at great personal risk.

"Governments around the globe continue to detain, imprison, torture and even kill people for their religious beliefs," Kerry said. "In too many places, governments are also failing to protect minorities from social discrimination and violence" against religious groups including Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, Christians, Muslims and Sikhs.

Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, said the appointment of Forman as anti-Semitism envoy showed that U.S. resolve to fight anti-Semitism is serious and ongoing. Leaders representing tens of thousands of worshippers at mosques across the country, have signed a joint letter to The Sunday Telegraph accusing the Government of attacking “the cornerstone of family life”

It is the first time that Muslim leaders have made a collective intervention on the issue and underlines the strength of feeling among ethnic minority voters.

Organisers said Muslim opposition should be seen as a challenge to David Cameron’s claims to be acting in the interests of “equality” and “diversity”.

In the letter – published as MPs prepare for their final Commons debate on the Government’s same-sex marriage bill – they quote the Koran and say they are fulfilling a “sacred trust to God” by airing their views.

Echoing comments by Anglican and Roman Catholic clergy, they describe marriage as a “sacred contract between a man and a woman” which they say “cannot be redefined”.

They also voice concerns about the status of teachers in faith schools and claim Muslim parents will be “robbed” of the opportunity to bring their children up in line with the faith.

Organisers acknowledged that the Muslim voice had been virtually “silent” on the issue thus far but said they now felt compelled to speak.

Imam Suliman Gani, of Tooting Mosque in south London, who led efforts to gather the signatures, said Muslim leaders “salute” the Christian clergy who had been vocal opponents of the Government on the issue.

He said many imams had been wary of airing their views publicly because of the negative way Islam is often portrayed, leaving them believing they would be ignored.

But, significantly, he said that because Christianity appeared to be under “attack”, Muslim leaders felt compelled to enter the fray.

Referring to a letter published in The Daily Telegraph earlier this year, he said: “There were 1,000 priests who signed a letter – yet they have been ignored so we felt we had to do this.

“I salute those priests who have taken a stand.”

He added: “The Muslim community will take this issue very, very seriously because now the Government has interfered with family.

“To us that is like taking children away from their mother: it will definitely have an effect on Mr Cameron’s vote.

“We cannot understand how it was possible that this was introduced so fast – but we cannot give up.

“We celebrate diversity, we want to have a peaceful coexistence with all people but our main concern in the mosques is the way the Government is changing the definition of marriage and what impact that will have on the children.”

A number of mental disorders may no longer exist in 2013 -- at least not under the names by which they're currently known.

Substantial changes have been proposed for the "psychiatrist's bible," the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, whose fifth edition is scheduled for release in May 2013. A draft of the DSM-5 was posted Feb. 10 on a special website by the American Psychiatric Association (APA); APA members, other mental health professionals and the public at large may leave comments on the site until July 15.

Of course, this changes reflected in this draft are not final (further revisions are expected through 2012), but for now, here are some of the disorders that have a high probability of getting the ax in 2013.

Transgendered people have criticized the DSM-IV and previous editions of the DSM for labeling them with a mental disease, gender identity disorder. The current draft of the DSM-5 renames gender identity disorder "gender dysphoria" and features significant changes to the diagnostic criteria. This is much the same as homosexuality being removed from the DSM. It was not based upon scientific facts and research. It was the result of political and special interest group pressure.

So, if these two addictions were never part of any edition of the DSM, and not recognized by the psychiatric community - why include them in this article of disorders that are being dropped from the DSM?

Oh, I know why - it is because the media willfully attempts to influence mental health, not by means of any sort of science, but by social normalization.

The current draft of the DSM-5 reduces the various autism-like disorders, including Asperger's syndrome, to a single diagnostic category for autism spectrum disorders. It doesn't do away with the term "Asperger's syndrome" per se, but it officially moves it into the autism spectrum, so it is no longer considered a stand-alone disorder distinct from autism. This change has caused controversy among members of the Asperger's community, some of whom do not want to be labeled as autistic.

Transvestic Fetishism

According to the DSM-IV, heterosexual men can be diagnosed with transvestic fetishism if they have sexual fantasies about cross-dressing, and those fantasies cause "impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas." The current draft of the DSM-5 doesn't actually do away with the disorder per se, but it renames it "transvestic disorder." As Time's John Cloud observed, "the DSM still seems to have a problem with cross-dressing."
Once again - the media attempting to manipulate the psychiatric field by creating social norms. Cross dressing is NOT normal, and is an indication of a mental issue. That's not the narrative the MSM and special interest groups like the LGBT want portrayed, hence statements like John Cloud.

Substance Abuse And Substance Dependence

These two diagnoses may be replaced with a single diagnostic category, "addiction and related disorders." As the University of Pennsylvania's Dr. Charles O'Brien, the head of the APA's work group on substance-related disorders, told reporters at a press call in February, substance dependence and abuse have no basis in the research.

"We unanimously agreed that ... there really isn't evidence for an intermediate stage [short of addiction] that is now known as abuse," he said, adding that the word "dependence" was problematic because forms of physical dependence are normal for certain medications, including opioid painkillers.

Mental Retardation

When students come to school next week, the principal will no longer be a man, he'll be a woman. School officials are meeting with parents and guardians, and will soon talk to students, to prepare them.
Gary Suraci, the principal of Ulster BOCES Career and Technical Center in Port Ewen, N.Y., is undergoing a sex change. Now, instead of being Gary Suraci he will be Genna Suraci.

Port Ewen — The highly acclaimed principal at the Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Center is undergoing a sex change.

Parents and guardians of the 1,150 students at the center got a letter this week inviting them to a meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the center. The subject: "The gender transition of the Career & Tech principal." Separate meetings will be held for students on Sept. 5-6, the letter said.

"We made a decision to try and inform the parents of the medical issues involved and to give advance notice so when the children show up it wasn't a shock," Ulster BOCES Superintendent Martin Ruglis said today.

The principal is Gary Suraci, Ruglis confirmed. Suraci did not take calls for comment at his office today. There was no answer at his Wappingers Falls home.

Suraci, 52, gained attention last year when he tried to win the Democratic nomination to oppose Republican Rep. Sue Kelly in the 19th Congressional District. John Hall got the Democratic nomination and went on to win the general election.

Suraci's political biography at the time said he has three children and three grandchildren. He ran, in part, on a "family values" platform.

Suraci's job is protected under state human rights and educator tenure laws, Ruglis said. He has worked at BOCES since 1996. Last year, Suraci's salary was $103,635.

The male-to-female sex change, a series of operations and related procedures, costs $10,000 to $30,000. The district's health insurance does not cover the cost, Ruglis said.

Suraci's work as principal have earned praise at both the state and national level, particularly in connection with a program called High Schools That Work.

"He has done a very, very good job as principal," Ruglis said. "The quality education that students are receiving up at Career & Tech is going to continue. ... The personal being is not changing, the competence, the experience, the intellect and the ability to work with people is not changing."

Pastor Leo Jalowzynski of the Circleville Church said he is dealing with a similar issue in his own congregation. But he questioned whether Suraci can continue to be effective in his job with the sex change.

"It is not the way God made us. It is not natural," Jalowzynski said. "I pray for his family that they can deal with this as well as for the parents and the students."

Ruglis said he hopes the public will accept Suraci's decision. "I hope that living in the 21st century, people are more sophisticated and in an era where we have tolerance of different religions and different issues," he said.

Thousands of gender transitions go on across the country, said Ginny Apuzzo, a prominent member of the local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community.

"I am sure some people will really need to be educated," she said, "but bottom line — if a person does their job, they are entitled to keep their job."

Now, this is old news, and as the years have gone by there have been a shift in public "attitude" (what we have been told to think) where stories like this don't even make the news.

What makes this story interesting is a recent development concerning "Genna".

Word is, "Genna" likes women. What?

Here we have a case of a family man who had 3 children with a woman undergo a sex change operation because he identified himself as a woman, and is now a lesbian? He was a lesbian trapped in a man's body?

What does this say about the mental health aspect of procedures like this? Was there any type of mental health screening? Isn't being a "lesbian in a man's body - I want to be a woman who likes women" a red flag of there being some serious mental issues? Apparently not. Just lop off the parts, a nip and tuck here and there, add hormone therapy and "Voila!"

Of course, asking these questions and seeking actual answers before the surgery would never occur - it is a civil rights violation. It is only through the passage of time where one can look critically at the facts. It is alarming that the mental health community does not deal with factors such as "I like women, but I want to like women as a woman myself" when determining the mental stability of a patient.

Of course, with the removal of homosexuality from the DSM, wanting to have a sex change to become a lesbian is perfectly normal.

Pessoalmente creio que a muitas pessoas falta um motivo para viver, algo de importante pelo qual lutar, algo maior do que elas e entao acabam abraçando valores errados e/ou entregando-se ao luxo, niquilismo e perversao, muitas vezes essas vidas acabam em depressao, num vazio total e essas pessoas produzem familhas cada vez mais fracas e menos eugenicas.

These disorders are an important U.S. public health issue in the United States because of their prevalence and impact on the child, family and community, with an estimated total annual cost of $247 billion, Perou and colleagues said.

Suicide, which can result from the interaction of mental disorders and other factors, was the second leading cause of death among children ages 12-17 in 2010, the report said.

Almost 7 percent had attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder -- the most prevalent parent-reported current diagnosis among children ages 3-17 -- followed by 3.5 percent with behavioral or conduct problems, 3 percent with anxiety, 2.1 percent with depression, 1.1 percent with autism spectrum disorders and .2 percent with Tourette syndrome among children ages 6-17.

An estimated 4.7 percent of adolescents ages 12-17 reported an illicit drug use disorder in the past year, 4.2 percent had an alcohol abuse disorder in the past year and 2.8 percent had cigarette dependence in the past month, the report said.

The findings were published in a supplement of the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Joe Glenton has said in his newly-published book, Soldier Box, that the situation on the ground in Afghanistan was quite opposite to what the British government and media pretended it to be.

Glenton was deployed to the Asian country in 2006, served there for seven months, became a conscientious objector and absent without leave and was sent to jail in 2010 for talking to the media about the Afghan war.

He says in Soldier Box that civilians were bombed in Afghanistan in cold blood, contrary to claims by Britain and its allies that they were there to spread democracy, support human rights, build infrastructure and those types of “hackneyed stuff”.

“We knew civilians were being bombed and how the war was being conducted. It was conducted in a climate of racism and indifference to the Afghan people, completely at odds with how it’s sold at home. I came back and because of those things, I thought, ‘No, this isn’t right’,” he said.

“Is it human rights or is it because Afghanistan is in a strategic location with borders with China, Pakistan and Iran? Are we spreading democracy or is this power politics? It’s a new veneer on a very old practice,” he added.

Glenton had earlier said in an article for the socialist Counterfire website in March 2012 that the campaign in Afghanistan was a “massacre” carried out as a “business as usual” under the same “reheated lies”.

“Recent history exposes the real face of the imperial project - kill-teams, Bagram prison, UK troops raping children, [Nazi] SS flags flying, Koran burning, house raids, kidnapping, torture, murder and mayhem. It is not a case of one loose cannon ruining the good work that has been done. This is a case of imperialism doing what imperialism does,” he said at the time.

Glenton’s Soldier Box hit the shelves at bookstores on Wednesday.

Britain and its western allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 to allegedly take democracy and stability to the country but facts on the ground show exactly the opposite with foreign forces whitewashing their continued massacre of civilians with terms such as "colateral damage" in the fight agaist terrorists.

The United States has denied any role in the killings. Israel has not commented.

Both Israel and the U.S have not ruled out a military option against Iran's nuclear facilities.

Last month, Amnesty International reported that Iran had 314 officially confirmed executions in 2012, the second highest behind China. It is feared that the actual total is much higher.

The United States provided French commanders with intelligence from its drones based in Niger.

"We need this capacity in the short term. There are currently two countries in the world that build drones, the United States and Israel," Le Drian said on TV channel iTele.

"We are in discussions with each to buy some straight away," he said.

When, in 1984, I started presenting Crimewatch, I shared everyone’s presumptions that crime is caused by criminals.

It seemed obvious: If we want to cut crime we must cut criminality.

Three years later, quite by chance, I had an epiphany.




I was reporting for the BBC and, at the start of China’s astonishing race towards modernisation, I stood on a top-floor balcony in a dusty town with the local mayor. He proudly pointed out the local hospital, a big school and a prosperous cluster of new houses.

Why, I asked, were some of the new homes surrounded by barbed wire? The mayor responded sorrowfully: ‘Burglaries,’ he said. ‘Mostly televisions.’ I said I hadn’t realised burglary was a problem in China.

‘It wasn’t,’ said the mayor.

‘So what changed?’ I asked.


The mayor recoiled slightly as though it were a trick question. After a moment he responded gravely: ‘We didn’t have televisions.’

Human nature remains more or less constant from one generation to another but situations change, and it is those evolving situations that largely determine how much is stolen, how many people are assaulted and how many citizens get hooked on drugs or even child pornography.

The message is that if you want to cut crime, you need to spend more time on low-hanging fruit.
By seeing crooks as the big issue, we tend to not to notice how important immediacy is.

We favour solutions which are remote – improving parenting, for example – rather than improving security at the scene of the crime.

We still need to catch offenders – I am a proud trustee of Crimestoppers – but we cannot arrest our way out of trouble.

I started looking to criminology for answers but found a lot of political diatribe and pseudoscience.
When my co-presenter, Jill Dando was murdered in 1999, I proposed a more rigorous approach and, with public support, we founded the Jill Dando Institute of Crime Science at University College London.

It is now thriving and has helped me see that almost everything we are told about crime – certainly everything I once thought I knew – is wrong.


In some ways, my argument is a challenge to everyday reporting of crime. The human condition recoils from the mundane untidiness of reality.

Who, for example, can resist a good conspiracy theory – whether it’s flying saucers, or that 9/11 was organised by Mossad, or that Princess Di was murdered?

Take what happened after the murder of Jill.

She was then the most popular presenter on TV, so her shooting caused a sensation and, given her role on Crimewatch, people leapt to the idea that she had been killed because of one of her appeals.

Within hours, I was trying to calm the speculation down.

The immediate facts made a contract killing improbable but in any case the revenge motive would have been entirely without precedent in modern mainland Britain.

As more evidence emerged, the conspiracy theory became even less sustainable. The killer had hung around with no disguise at the wrong address – it was chance she turned up. He had no getaway vehicle and so had to walk away down a long straight street with no turn-offs.

He didn’t have a real gun or ammunition but home-made versions of both. He held the weapon in contact with his victim’s head, which would have showered him with tell-tale forensic evidence. And so it went on. All in all it was about as amateurish and clumsy as a shooting can be.

So I became alarmed when the inquiry seemed to be taking the conspiracy theory seriously.
I wrote privately to the head of the investigation, pointing out that when celebrities are shot, like John Lennon, the killer invariably turned out to be a loner.

It turned out that Britain’s top profiler at the National Crime Faculty agreed with me, but nobody took much notice. It was a frustrating as well as an upsetting time for me and for Jill’s other colleagues on the programme.

Yet, when this first conspiracy theory began to fade, I could not have imagined that another intrigue would replace it, one that was not just unconvincing but risible.

According to this new hypothesis, the author of Jill’s murder was Slobodan Milosevic. The reason was that a few weeks before Jill’s death, she had fronted an appeal for victims of the civil war in former Yugoslavia and there was conjecture that the Serbs had taken umbrage. Then, when a Serb TV station was hit by a NATO air strike on Belgrade, a plot was hatched to kill her.

However improbable, this Balkans theory made front-page news and became one of the most popular and persistent explanations for Jill’s death.

For the record, the idea was based entirely on a mild letter of complaint to Jill written by a Serb. It was so low-key that Jill’s agent only mentioned it to police, ‘clutching at straws’, some weeks later.

She thinks the Yugoslav connection is ludicrous and so do the detectives and all Jill’s colleagues who have been on the inside track of the inquiry. Yet crime and conspiracy theories go together as readily as Bonnie and Clyde. We love ’em.


Myth One: 'Crime is caused by a broken society'

Liberals and Left-wingers are convinced crime is caused by unfairness and poverty, and social conservatives are equally certain it is down to lack of discipline and failing values.

Yet there can be few clearer illustrations of the huge part played by temptation and opportunity than the rise and fall in car crime.

Car numbers reached ten million in 1970, or one for every two households, and that turned out to be a tipping point. Car theft boomed. Some 20,000 were reported stolen in 1968, and then, suddenly, in 1969 thefts rocketed six-fold.


Did something happen in that time to breed more deviance and badness? Less authority, less self-control, perhaps? Or more unfairness and therefore less compliance?

The numbers add up to a different story: Half the homes in Britain now had hundreds or thousands of pounds’ worth of property sitting out on the street unguarded and it was temptation on an ostentatious scale. It was also staggeringly easy.

My first car, a Mini, had almost no security at all. You could force the flimsy lock with one hand or prise open the sliding window and unlock it from the inside.

By 1990, there were 20 million cars and half a million thefts a year and by 1993, when ‘taking without owner’s consent’, or ‘twocking’ reached its peak, the annual risk of a vehicle being stolen was one in 30.

Then, in 1995, the problem started to decline, which is where social theories hit another problem. Community divisions like income inequality were growing, not diminishing.

Right-wing beliefs also faced a contradiction. There had been no return to hanging, birching or religious observance, and more and more children were born out of wedlock.

Yet car theft tumbled. Within ten years, recorded numbers halved, and by 2011 twocking had dipped below 100,000, the lowest figure since 1968.

For once, politicians were involved in wholesale and dramatically successful crime reduction. They put pressure on car-makers to mend the vulnerabilities in their products.

Immobilisers, intruder alarms, central locking, sophisticated keys, tougher door and boot designs were introduced and much more besides, and all of them had an immediate effect – especially immobilisers, which prevented hot-wiring of the ignition.

In little more than a decade, car crime plummeted in England and Wales by around two-thirds.

Myth Two: 'British justice is the best in the world'


When I started Crimewatch, I thought British justice was the best in the world.

After 30 years’ experience, I am now in contempt of court. It is not as open as it claims, it is slow, costly, and still believes that debate is the best way to establish facts. It is also more concerned with offenders than with victims.

When my 90-year-old father-in-law woke one night to find an intruder, the police were all one could have asked of them. His front room was strewn with glass, drawers and cupboards had been rifled and a random selection of trinkets stolen.

My father-in-law had come down the staircase brandishing his walking stick (‘Well,’ he told us, ‘I was in the Army’), shouted at the intruder to get out, and got a vague impression of someone climbing back out through the broken window.



The police made sure he had a cup of tea and stayed a reassuring half an hour. The next day, a forensic officer found a bloody fingerprint – the burglar had cut himself as he fled through the broken shards. So far, so good. And that was the last we heard.

Or at least, it was until we called them and were told they had identified the villain – a prolific burglar – but would not press charges because, at 90, my father-in-law would not make a good witness. The matter was dropped.

It was a classic illustration of how the legal process has divorced itself from decency and common sense.

It should not have mattered if my father-in-law, nonagenarian, living alone, frightened and in semi-darkness, got the description wrong.

The fingerprint and blood left by the burglar were proof enough. The offender went on offending and the victim was abandoned.

What police will not have known (and since nobody kept in touch, how could they?) was how that small nocturnal trauma ruined the rest of my father-in-law’s life. Thereafter, he couldn’t sleep. He began hallucinating, seeing a strange man in his room and wandering round his house, a man who used his toothpaste and toyed with his possessions.

His confusion and anxiety were not caused by the burglar – it was diagnosed as a form of dementia – but the form it took undoubtedly was. At his insistence, after a lifetime of domestic tranquillity, his house was thereafter encased with burglar-proof steel mesh.

Myth Three: 'Poverty is the main cause of crime'

Instinctively, almost everyone thinks poverty is the prime cause of crime.

This is especially true for the liberal Left, for whom it has been an article of faith, but even Right-wingers at heart share in the assumption that the poor are somehow dangerous.

Yet surveys show there is no correlation between a society’s experience of crime and its sense of fairness.


In any case, crime rose exponentially at a time of unprecedented prosperity when, in the famous words of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, Britain had, ‘never had it so good’.

Whatever else was causing crime to rise, it was not poverty. On the contrary, it was wealth, which brought with it progenitors of crime, including: higher wages and more credit, thus more to steal; more spare time; more late night carousing; more alcohol and drugs; more social mobility; more travel; and more anonymity.

We forget that the class system had been a huge restraining influence on the majority.

Its breakdown has changed our dreams and made us hope that they really might come true. It has made us aspire and made us envious.

As the pitilessly direct Conservative sage Lord Tebbit put it: ‘When I look at what we denounce as the appalling conduct of “ordinary people” I see the way the rich have always behaved.

‘It’s just that they have had the resources to deal with the fallout.’


Myth Four: 'A 'wicked' minority is behind crime

The truth is that most of us cheat and steal and almost all of us can be persuaded to. Yet we rationalise our own behaviours, while we denounce the sins of others.

We have constructed a fantasy world in which we, the goodies, must be protected from a minority of potential baddies.

Most of us break the law. A third of British males born in the 1950s had acquired a criminal conviction by the time they were middle-aged.

If you think that sounds fantastic, several follow-up studies have shown similar results.

And what about the other two-thirds? Have they never been criminals? Or could it be that they never got caught and convicted?

A 2003 survey found almost half of us would evade income tax, two-thirds would dodge a fare or install illegal software, almost as many would steal office stationery and over a quarter would filch a hotel towel. For ‘would’ one might reasonably substitute ‘had’.

We all have ethics, and each of us has different limits, but sainthood is not the default position of humanity and for most of us our morals are for sale if the price is right.


Myth Five: 'There is more crime than ever before'


The more historical archives are analysed, the more it seems that violence was once a much larger part of life than it is now.

Historical records show the homicide rates in 13th Century England were about twice as high as those in the 16th and 17th Centuries, and those of the 16th and 17th Centuries were some five to ten times higher than today.

Recorded crime rose slowly from 1900 to 1930, then accelerated to the 1950s, after which there was a fearful lurch upwards that continued for 40 years.

After that, crime did not just dip, it plunged.

Almost all the downward trends were masked at first by figures recorded by police, but police statistics can be hugely misleading because most crime – including serious violence – is not reported.

Property crime began to tumble around 1995 and violent crime subsided five years later. Hospital attendance for wounding fell every year from 2001 onwards.

Homicide seemed to have peaked in 2002. The speed of crime’s decline had come to mirror the ferocity of its ascent.




So deeply rooted are our assumptions about crime and criminals that it sometimes seems as though no amount of evidence will shift them: the curmudgeon’s myth that crime is always rising, the deviancy delusion that offenders are abnormal.

But it really is true that opportunity makes the thief. To a vast extent it also creates the football hooligan, drink-driver, and knife-wielding youth too.

This is why crime rates rise, and it is how we make them fall. It is why burglary as well as car theft rocketed until we became serious about home and vehicle security. It is how we so radically curbed football violence and road fatalities.

It is the reason why so many British politicians got caught with their hands in the till until their expenses protocols were changed.

Crime requires more than a predisposition to offend. It will flourish when we make it easy and shrivel when we make it hard.

The events at luxury hotels were designed to give the staff ‘a sense of belonging’ after they joined NHS England, a new quango overseeing spending of the country’s £95.6 billion health budget.

Most already worked for the health service, at local or regional health authority level, and though some have moved to a new headquarters in Leeds, many haven’t even had to change offices in what amounts to a rebranding of their existing roles under the NHS England banner.

Some 4,200 staff, from secretaries to executives, have been on the courses or are due to attend. They started in April and run until August.

The £672,000 cost of the 35 events – enough to pay for 31 qualified nurses – was last night described as ‘a total waste of public money’ by MPs, at a time when dozens of A&E units have closed and the NHS is more cash-strapped than it has been for years.

One delegate – a senior manager – said: ‘There were some good points, such as a video about a patient’s real experience of the NHS, but for the majority of the time, we sat around wondering what on earth we were doing there.

The money could have been better spent on patient care.’

The one-day experiences, dubbed Launch Pad, cost £160 a head.

According to the NHS England website, the aim is to help new staff express how they want the body ‘to feel as a place to work’ and ‘to look at ourselves, and think about how we want this organisation to be’.

Venues for the induction days include Redworth Hall, a Jacobean country house hotel dating back to 1693 set in 150 acres of gardens near Durham. It has an AA rosette restaurant and a spa.

Among other venues being used are the Imperial Hotel overlooking Torbay – which according to its website is ‘ideally located for exploring the English Riviera’ – and the Macdonald Botley Park Hotel near Southampton, which offers ‘breathtaking scenery’ and a ‘championship golf course on site’.

The delegate, who did not want to be identified, attended an event for 120 staff in London and recalled how attendees were told to introduce themselves by picking a picture from a table that best represented how they felt about their new job.

The delegate said: ‘I got left with a picture of a tractor, so I said something about NHS England sowing seeds of hope, which seemed to go down OK.’



That was followed by a 15-minute ‘scripted drama’ in which two actors carried in a third to give the impression of a positive, well-supported move to the new organisation.

In the afternoon participants were asked to create collages about NHS England from magazines during a 45-minute section called Making It Real – Personal Commitment.

The delegate said: ‘I spent most of the time reading old copies of Heat magazine before they were ripped up and glued on to the picture.’

Attendees were also asked to vote for their favourite drawing by an artist, who sketched cartoons based on what people said their hopes were for the new organisation.

The day ended at 4pm with staff summing up their views of NHS England in one word.


Among those expected to attend in future is Nicola Plumb, NHS England’s new £98,000 ‘head of brand’.

She recently posted one of the artist’s sketches on Twitter and said: ‘Looks like a great workshop for @NHSEngland staff today.’

Hay Group, a global management consultancy, is being paid most of the fee to help organise the induction day training. About £26 per person is being spent by NHS England on venues and hospitality.

An NHS England spokesman said Launch Pad was ‘signed off by NHS England’s Executive Team’ at a meeting on November 29 last year.

By then, controversial NHS boss Sir David Nicholson had joined as chief executive.

He has come under intense pressure over failing to stop the scandal at Stafford Hospital, where up to 1,200 people are thought to have died from 2005 to 2009 due to appalling patient care.

Tory MP Bill Cash, who helped bring the Mid Staffs scandal to light, described the programme’s activities as ‘psycho-babble’.

He said: ‘It just seems to be a total waste of public money. To me, induction days are about getting on with a day’s work.’

And Andrew Gwynne, shadow health minister, said: ‘The NHS shouldn’t be wasting thousands on management consultants. Patients and staff will see through this poor rebranding exercise.’

Jo-Anne Wass, NHS England’s HR director, said: ‘The events feature modern training methods, used by many companies, designed to engage staff in a creative way and to give them a greater understanding of their role and how what they do directly affects patients.’

The programme was arranged by the NHS Leadership Academy, which is funded by NHS England.

A spokesman said: ‘Every penny we spend is rigorously tested for value for taxpayers’ money.’

As I am an avid reader of jewish news; as well as jewish views, I thought I would bring back a concept that I experimented with two years ago on Semitic Controversies. Specifically a summary of this weeks news to draw attention to little tit-bits which people might not be aware of from our favourite group of people: the jews. I will use this weekly article published on the Sunday (in addition to my usual daily one) to make a few acerbic comments about the news in order to entertain (without any malice), but also help those who are undecided on the jewish question make up their minds.

To wit this week we were graced with the news that the Hebrew Union College; which is a major yeshiva, (i.e. a rabbinical seminary), has forbidden any student who is dating; or is married to, a non-jew from attending. If say a Christian seminary (obviously not a Catholic one) had banned Christians who were dating or were married to jews: would that not be the scandal of the century?

Of course it would: it just goes to show that there is a socio-political double standard in practice which views all jewish (and more broadly non-European/American) particularist ideas as being fine and dandy, but which also views any remotely pro-European/American particularism to be akin to devil worship.

In other news the celebrated physicist Steven Hawking showed he has more spine (pun intended) than many fellow scholars and scientists in his endorsement of the BDS movement and his refusal to attend Israel's presidential conference. In spite of this praiseworthy action we should point out that Hawking was originally going to attend the conference, but only withdrew after pressure from fellow academics and pro-Palestinian activists: so while he did the right thing, it was only after being nudged in the right direction.

In possible retaliation Facebook has now blocked the Nakba (the 'Arab Holocaust') group page.

I wonder would Facebook also like to block the umpteen 'Holocaust' groups just to be consistent?

More disturbingly the Jewish National Committee on Scouting has voted for and is now campaigning to remove the long standing ban on 'Gay Scouts' in the Boy Scouts of America. What ever is next? Are we to suppose that the Boy Scouts of America are supposed to provide special facilities to 'transgender scouts' now or? Or should they provide 'gender sensitivity counselling' to those who are so hateful as to not want a teenage hermaphrodite prancing around summer camp dressed as Dolly Parton.

Perhaps I am just being a 'reactionary', but if we have 'gay scout leaders' then; given the whole homosexual subculture focused on seducing teenage boys, are we not giving the fox the keys to the chicken coup?

That said if you thought weird behaviour was confined to gentiles; as jews like to claim in their screeds on anti-Semitism, then you'd be wrong considering the latest incident in Pikesville, Baltimore with a mad jewess stalking a young jewish couple proceeding to then throw a large rock at their house and then wave a replica hand gun until the police turned up and shot her.

In rather more serious development a jew named Alan Gross; who was been imprisoned for 15 years in 2009 by the Cuban government for being a spy and trying to recruit the Cuban jewish community to work for 'US Intelligence' (read: Israeli Intelligence), has settled with the US Government in a $60 million lawsuit against them for allegedly not telling him the 'risks' involved with going to a communist police state to give a minority group good access to the internet so they can easily be contacted by third parties.

Since when has a jew ever taken responsibility for their own actions?

Iran by contrast has just announced that it has executed two Israeli spies: we await with baited breath for their extended families to bring a lawsuit against the US government on some pretext that they have incurred bodily harm working for the CIA or the like.

At the Western Wall in Israel (the so-called 'Kotel' in Judaism) however there have; as part of a series of high profile incidents, (8) been clashes between ultra-Orthodox jews and modern Orthodox jewesses (read: superstitious third-wave jewish feminists) over whether or not women are allowed to pray there and whether said women are allowed to dance around and bow to an old wall in the traditional jewish prayer shawl (tallitot) while wearing a black leather strap around their left arm with a little black box with 'sacred writing' strapped to their heads (tefillin). (9)

Hilariously the jewish harridans; when they got hauled away by the Israeli police, started screaming 'Nazi' at the officers as well as their opponents.

Two things strike me about this: jews use 'Nazi' as an pejorative epithet regardless of whom they are flinging it at and it has also become the jewish cultural equivalent of calling someone an 'evil bastard'. This term of abuse; which jews clearly like to throw out, ironically has far more weight in non-jewish countries; which are perpetually regarded as being de facto anti-Semitic by jews, given the fact that they supposed committed 'crimes against the jews' is bashed into their skull every three seconds by some self-righteous jew with an inferiority complex (after all jews use it too much in Israel for it to even be noticeable). The second is that if Israel is the 'modern liberal democracy' of the Middle East: then why does it actively discriminate against jewish women who want to pray at the Kotel?

I thought that was the kinda of thing that the Muslims did?

Oh wait perhaps Judaism and Islam might have quite a lot in common?

No: that couldn't be it.

Or could it?

Incidentally while all this was going on: nearby a bunch of hard-line Zionists and settler fanatics (who seem to have been doing a bit of rabble-rousing at the behest of senior Likud politician Moshe Feiglin) were picking with a fight with Muslims over the Al-Aqsa Mosque on Temple Mount, which the jews demand be blown up so they can build a new Temple of Solomon on the site. (10)

Ah jews are such a peaceful and pleasant people: no?

In other news the successor to Hugo Chavez's Presidency of Venezuela has revealed that he; and his Minister of Communication Ernesto Villegas, are actually jewish and therefore cannot be anti-Semitic. This is particularly amusing considering that jews have spent the last decade bleating about the 'persecution' of jews in Venezuela by Chavez's government with all the predictable rhetorical gusto about Chavez being a 'new Hitler' or at the very least a 'new Stalin'.

While on the subject of anti-Semitism the Australian Federal Parliament has passed yet another declaration about their desire and willing to 'combat anti-Semitism', which; if you read the text of the declaration, is actually a declaration that they wish to combat anti-Israel/anti-Zionist discourse as 'hate speech'.

So much for 'free speech' in Australia then.

This is while Israel plans to legalize four currently illegal jewish settlements in the West Bank in a move designed to remind US Secretary of State John Kerry who calls the shots in Washington on Middle Eastern policy. This comes after Kerry had been warbling on about a 'new peace plan' and then just as he was due to jet in to have a chat: Benjamin Netanyahu makes the point that Israel can do what it likes without fear of retaliation from the United States by making this rather bellicose move.

All the while the IDF has now claimed in court that it didn't drop chemical weapons; specifically White Phosphorus, on Palestinians and that if Palestinians civilians were killed by it: oh well they were in the wrong place at the wrong time because the IDF didn't know they happened to be at home.

What happened to there being a 'red line' in the use of chemical weapons for US military intervention against Israel let alone Syria?

That said Israel is doing its bit for international relations as it has found that at least one state likes it: Senegal.

Aside from the fact that most Israelis probably didn't know Senegal existed let alone have the ability to place it on a map. Israel has decided to do as it did in Sudan (hence their continual warbling about Darfur) and sent large amounts of money as well as numerous 'Israeli experts' into Senegal to train them in various different technical disciplines. This would sound rather generous if Senegal didn't happen to be a major exporter of minerals (ironically; in relation to the IDF's use of them on their fellow Muslims, phosphates) and Israel wasn't desperate for cheap access to raw materials that can fuel its flagging economy (which is dependent on preferential US trade agreements and huge amounts of foreign aid).

In nearby Morocco we have also been informed that one of the King of Morocco's chief advisers is a jew named Andre Azoulay, which might explain why Morocco is Israel's closest friend in the Arab world (albeit one that occasionally throws an tantrum at Israel officially so as to placate the general populace).

It goes to show that where-ever jews are powerful then positive relations with Israel tend to be rather high up on that government's agenda.

The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (aka the Claims Conference) has been in all sorts of hot water this week over the revelations; which were hardly a surprise to dedicated jew watchers out there, that its own staff ran a $57 million dollar scam and that a whistle blower had written a widely circulated internal letter in 2001 exposing just this (the Forward article contains an image of the letter and what it says for those interested).

That jews have been using the so-called 'Holocaust' as a gravy train is nothing to new to many people, but the hilarity comes from the fact that while the jews were extorting money from Germany to pay for seemingly eternally needy 'Holocaust survivors': other jews were stealing that money from them to enrich themselves.

No wonder they always wanted more money: their own staff were pinching it!

Then; in an event sure to cause even the most sombre of people to burst out laughing, the Claims Conference promptly; in an irony of ironies, blames dead officials for the fraud.

Beautiful isn't it?

An organization that exists to get money from a government for the alleged actions of dead people then; when its own corruption is discovered, goes around blaming other dead people for it. Perhaps they will want compensation for that from Western countries to?

You couldn't make it up if you tried.

In relation to this the president of Hungary's major jewish organization has been fired due to his involvement with the Claims Conference fraud and the miserable failure of the World Jewish Congress' recent conference in Hungary to stem the righteous indignation of Hungarians in relation to current and historic jewish activities in their country.

While in more US news: in Arizona a jews only form of legal aid has been created and has been given $8,250 to start defending needy jews who can't reveal the current whereabouts of their Swiss bank accounts.

Perhaps we could form a Europeans only form of legal aid?

Yes: I doubt it too, but it would nice to deal with some kind of sanity in the anglophone west for a change.

And last but not least part of the socialist left has finally realized; with Israel's recent air strikes on Syria, that Israel is a key player on the pro-jihadi (sorry the 'Free Syrian Army') side of the fence there and that Israelis want Syria in chaos so that they can; at some point in the future, invade if they need to, cut of the flow of weapons from Iran and Syria to Hezbollah in Lebanon and also open up an air corridor for potential unilateral air strikes on Iran

Oh, but Israel is a peaceful country: isn't it?

The informer called at noon. He said five poachers would shortly be entering a forested corner of the Lewa wildlife conservancy in northern Kenya, close to where a rhino and her calf were shot in February.

Silea Legei, deputy commander of Lewa’s security force, hurried to the spot with 11 rangers. They hid in the long grass beside an animal track leading from the trees, and waited.

The poachers arrived shortly after 3pm. One carried a semi-automatic, another a bow with poisoned arrows. That was justification enough for the rangers.
Lewa rhinos were well protected around the time of Prince William's visit to Kenya and in the years after. Recently, Lewa has been infiltrated by poachers.


Prince William was said to be 'absolutely one of the workers' during his time on a cattle ranch in Lewa. The area is now on the front line of a brutal war on Rhino poaching

They opened fire. The armed poacher shot back. During the gun battle, a terrified rhinoceros raced past the men who had come to slaughter it.

When the shooting stopped, four poachers lay dead, their blood trickling into the dirt. The fifth had fled.

The jubilant rangers showed no pity for the poachers, though one was a teenager and another just 20.

They had struck back after losing 14 rhino to poaching gangs over the previous two years, 12 of them black rhino which are listed as critically endangered because there are fewer than 5,000 left on Earth. ‘They got what they deserved,’ Legei said.

Lewa is 60,000 acres of storybook Africa spread out beneath a vast blue sky.

Its savannahs, lush and green after recent rains, are fringed by distant hills and the craggy, snow-flecked peaks of Mount Kenya.

It teems with elephants, zebras, giraffes, lions, warthogs, buffalo, impala and 127 rhino, its flagship species – 69 of them black rhinos, distinguished by their prehensile upper lips, the rest whites.

Monkeys cavort in flat-topped acacia trees. Guinea fowl scatter before the jeeps that bump along its rutted tracks.

Prince William described the months he spent at Lewa during his gap year in 2001 as one of the ‘happiest times of my life’, and it is easy to see why. It was a sanctuary for him, just as it used to be for rhinos.

He enjoyed a freedom he can never have in Britain, counting game, creating fire breaks and building hides.

‘He was absolutely one of the workers,’ says Ian Craig who started the conservancy out of his parents’ cattle ranch in the 1980s.

Legei knew first-hand how much William loved working there. He took the Prince on night patrols, and they would eat by the campfire and sleep beneath the stars.

‘He said where he came from he didn’t have opportunities like that, but here he was free,’ Legei said.

John Tanui, 34, another Lewa employee, played football with William and enjoyed banter about the relative merits of Arsenal and Manchester United.

‘He played in the centre. He was very good and very fast,’ Tanui recalled.



William has returned to Lewa several times since, most famously with Kate in October 2010. Towards the end of their stay, he drove her up to a remote lakeside cabin on Mount Kenya and proposed.

‘Thank you for such a wonderful 24 hours,’ his future bride wrote in the guest book. ‘I love the warm fires and candle lights – so romantic! Hope to be back again soon.’

But if the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did return today, it is doubtful they could spend a night alone in that cabin at Rutundu.

And it is unlikely that William would be allowed out on patrol, for Lewa is now on the front line of a brutal war on poaching. It is a paradise lost.

Since December, intruders have killed nine of Lewa’s cherished rhino. All were blacks. They are more vulnerable than whites because they eat branches, not grass, and are therefore easier to hear at night. Two were calves.

The poachers fired at least 24 rounds into one of the rhinos. In most cases, they hacked off the horns, leaving behind bloody and mutilated carcasses.

Tragically, four rhinos managed to escape with horns intact – only to die of their injuries later.

It’s a shocking reversal of fortunes for the Lewa rhinos. Craig explained: ‘When William was here as a gap student, no one had cracked Lewa.


'It was absolutely Fort Knox and we had not lost a rhino in 23 years, but suddenly the game changed.’

The 61-year-old – a professional hunter in his youth who has since devoted his life to saving rhinos – is a close friend of the prince.

He said William was ‘saddened and sickened by the rhinos being killed’.

William is also angry. In London on Tuesday, the Prince – who is patron of the wildlife charity Tusk Trust – will express his increasing concern about the poaching onslaught that is afflicting not just Lewa but all of Africa.

He will team up with his father Prince Charles to call for political and diplomatic action on a global scale to counter a scourge that has, they will say, reached ‘epidemic’ proportions.

In an almost unprecedented joint appearance, the two future Kings will host a conference at St James’s Palace for delegates from those countries where horn and ivory are being plundered, and from those that receive or traffic that contraband.

The Princes want the poaching of rhino, elephants and other wildlife put at the top of the international agenda.

They say the slaughter is being driven by sophisticated international criminal networks and terrorist groups, and will urge the key nations to sign a solemn commitment this autumn to end illegal trade in wildlife.

The case for action is overwhelming, because the war is manifestly being lost. Africa has barely 25,000 rhino left. In South Africa, home to four-fifths of the continent’s rhinos, 448 were poached in 2011, 668 in 2012, and this year’s toll is heading for 800.

Mozambique has just lost its last rhinos to poachers who were aided by corrupt rangers.

Tanzania has fewer than 150 left – and even Africa’s wildlife sanctuaries have become graveyards.
Mike Watson, a former British Army officer who is Lewa’s chief executive, said: ‘Wherever there are rhino, they are being slaughtered.’

Elephants are faring no better. Scarcely 400,000 survive in Africa, down from 1.3 million in 1979. Nearly 33,000 have been killed since January last year, according to the website bloodyivory.org.

In Tanzania more than 10,000 are being slaughtered annually, while the elephant populations of countries such as Cameroon, Chad, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Mali and the Central African Republic have been almost entirely wiped out.

For thousands of years, the horns of a rhino and tusks of an elephant were a means of survival. Today they can be the animal’s death warrant.

The increasingly affluent Chinese and Vietnamese believe the horns and tusks have magical properties that cure anything from cancer to fevers, impotence and hangovers.

Powdered rhino horn has become the cool thing to serve after fancy dinners in Shanghai or Saigon. That quack medicine has sent the black-market price for horns soaring past £18,000 a pound, far outstripping gold.

It means a grazing rhino – a generally placid, short-sighted herbivore that had no predators until humans came along – is carrying two protuberances on its forehead worth nearly £330,000.

It has become an irresistible target for criminal syndicates who more commonly trade in guns and drugs.

‘It’s the equivalent of putting an unprotected donkey in Piccadilly with two gold bars on it,’ said Craig.
Watson described Lewa as a ‘62,000-acre cashpoint’.

Lewa’s guardians have responded with a full-scale security operation, led by 30 elite armed rangers, that costs about £500,000 a year and is overtly military in nature.

The poachers usually strike after dark, so each evening – when the tourists have returned to their lodges – ten two-man teams take up positions on hillsides overlooking the 140-mile long electrified fence that rings the conservancy.


They carry Heckler and Koch G3 semi-automatic rifles, night-vision goggles, thermal imaging equipment and flares.

They have police reservist status, allowing them to shoot armed poachers on sight, and they receive a bonus for doing so.

‘If someone comes into the conservancy with a gun, you just put him down. If you challenge him, that’s like giving him a chance to kill you first,’ said ranger Philip Lelelit, 33, as he and a camouflaged colleague melted into the darkness one night last week.

They stayed there until dawn, working alternate two-hour shifts, sustained by tea and listening intently for the trademark footfall of humans amid the cacophony of animal noises.

The rangers are merely the front line of Lewa’s defences. They are linked by radio to a 24-hour operations room and a rapid-response team.

The conservancy has a helicopter to rush reinforcements to the scene of an attack, two surveillance planes and a team of tracker dogs.
Not long ago two bloodhounds, Toffee and Tash, tracked three Somali poachers through the bush for three hours after the gang left the conservancy.

Rangers then killed them in a shoot-out. Lewa also employs 44 khaki-clad monitors who tramp the reserve on foot each day and raise the alarm if a rhino disappears.

Park staff have developed a sophisticated intelligence operation and a network of informers that includes members of poaching gangs. ‘Whatever it takes,’ Watson replied when asked how much the turncoats are paid.

To enlist the support of local communities, Lewa also ploughs a million dollars into schools, clinics and other development projects each year.

That policy paid off this month when a black rhino named Omni was killed with a poisoned spear on an adjacent conservancy called Il Ngwesi.

Omni attracted tourists, and the local elders were so outraged that they threatened to put curses on the poachers unless they gave themselves up. Three men surrendered immediately.

But the poaching syndicates are formidable too, and quick to exploit corrupt officials, porous borders and the presence of large numbers of Chinese construction workers who can smuggle rhino horn home.

The gangs send men into Lewa armed with AK-47s from neighbouring Somalia, and with ammunition and night-vision goggles stolen from a British Army base at Archers Post, 20 miles away.

The guns are often fitted with home-made silencers. They pay bribes of £3,000 or more to Lewa’s employees for information on the whereabouts of its rhinos and rangers.

That’s a huge temptation when a ranger’s wage is barely £165 a month. One monitor gave a poacher a uniform and a tour of the conservancy.

Watson has fired eight corrupt employees in two years.

The syndicates and their henchmen operate with virtual impunity because the law is full of loopholes, officials are easily bought and fines are a fraction of the value of the contraband.

Everyone knows who the local traders are. Their base is Isiolo – a dusty, impoverished town that straddles a highway ten miles north of Lewa and is renowned for banditry and cheap firearms.

Lewa has a database called Mozaic that lists their names and transgressions, even their telephone numbers.

‘We arrest them as many times as we can but they come out scot-free,’ said a frustrated police officer who – tellingly – requested anonymity for fear of retribution.

We tried to visit a couple of the alleged traders, despite our taxi driver’s trepidation. ‘These are very dangerous people,’ he warned.

One was Buko, who somehow escaped prosecution after elephant tusks were found in his Land Cruiser in 2009. He runs a backstreet warehouse selling bags of flour and milk powder.

‘Pliz customers!!! Check your belongings B4 you leave. Anything lost no compensation,’ proclaimed a handwritten cardboard sign above the counter.

Buko’s son professed not to know where his father was, when he would return or what his mobile number was.

The other was Robert ‘Rasta’ Njiru, 36, who has twice been caught with large amounts of ivory. He was not at his timber yard so we called his mobile.

He refused to meet, claiming he was flying to the Democratic Republic of Congo for two weeks.

But these are mere middlemen. The real kingpins sit in Nairobi and are known to the Kenyan government but protected by wealth and connections.

Ian Craig admits that even the toughest security is a stop-gap measure at best, not a solution.

He acknowledges that few conservancies can afford to emulate Lewa, which has wealthy supporters in the UK and America – though a sister conservancy called Ol Pejeta has bought itself a drone.

‘We have every single tool in the bag to protect our rhino but still we’re struggling. Elsewhere in Africa it’s a losing battle,’ he says.

Tuesday’s conference will therefore focus on much broader, long-term strategies such as reducing Asia’s demand for horn and ivory, and global law enforcement.

But some conservationists contend that attempting to reduce that demand is like trying to end the West’s appetite for drugs.

They argue for a legalised and regulated trade in horns, or farming rhinos to meet the demand.

Others favour de-horning rhinos so they are no longer worth killing, or even poisoning their horns.

Mr Craig, who describes his battle to save rhinos as a ‘personal religion’, wants a global ‘war on poaching’ with governments deploying all their military, diplomatic and technological resources against a common enemy.

His greatest fear is not that rhinos will become extinct. It is that they will never again range free across Africa’s great plains, as they have since prehistoric times.

He fears the only way of protecting them will be to imprison them behind people-proof fences in militarised zones, sad shadows of their magnificent ancestors.

He fears that ‘Lewa will become a giant zoo’. Some would argue it has already become one, and that ours is the age in which the days of truly wild rhino came to a shameful end.

Tintswalo Ngobeni, 22, fled to England from the southern African nation as a teenager after she caught the attention of the millionaire monarch, a notoriously oppressive ruler known for his lavish lifestyle.

As part of Swazi custom, King Mswati III, 45, is permitted to choose a new bride every year.

Miss Ngobeni, who now lives in Birmingham, was just 15 when the King made his advances after seeing her at the palace of his fourth wife, LaNgangaza. She said she was ‘terrified’ when she learned of his marriage intentions.

She added: ‘He started calling me at boarding school. He would ask me if I wanted to be a part of the royal family. I had to keep quiet about my fears but I knew I didn’t want to get married to him and have a life devoted to the king.

'His wives are kept in their palace, surrounded by bodyguards, and they can’t really go anywhere unless the king says so. The only thing they do is go to America once a year, as the king gives them a shopping allowance.'

Miss Ngobeni was forced to abandon a comfortable lifestyle in a private boarding school as her aunt, who was her chief guardian, arranged the escape to England to join her mother, who moved to Birmingham five years earlier, fleeing an abusive husband.

Fears: Miss Ngobeni believes she could be arrested or even killed if she has to return to Swaziland

‘I didn’t have a choice,’ she said. ‘Nobody has ever turned down the king or dares to disobey him, so I just disappeared.’

Since her arrival in England, Miss Ngobeni has become a vocal opponent of the oppressive Swazi regime, where political opposition parties are banned and activists routinely arrested or assaulted.


However, Miss Ngobeni’s high-profile activities, including weekly protests outside the Swazi embassy in London with activist group Swazi Vigil, have caught the attention of the authorities in her home country and she now believes she is in more danger than ever.



She said: ‘Recently I had news that people had been sent from Swaziland to come and get me, which really scares me. If I went back, I would be arrested or much worse as there are people there who are tortured, beaten up or killed for being politically active.’

Miss Ngobeni now lives in fear of having to return to Swaziland, after her first plea for political asylum in England in 2007 was denied in 2011.

Last month, she was arrested and taken to an immigration detention centre after 18 months of reporting weekly to the authorities.

However, after pressure from the TUC and the office of Roger Godsiff, Labour MP for Birmingham, Miss Ngobeni was released and has now been granted an appeal by the Home Office.

Mr Godsiff said yesterday: ‘We were very pleased solicitors were successful in achieving a judicial review into Miss Ngobeni’s case.’

The father of 27 children, King Mswati III was a guest at the William and Kate wedding as well as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations last summer.

The king’s sixth wife escaped from the royal harem last year, citing years of ‘emotional and physical abuse’ by her husband.

A spokesman from the Home Office refused to comment.

Seecrypt, which costs £2 a month, allows users to apply a secret code to their messages and calls which gives them military-level security.

The system also makes it impossible for intelligence agencies to analyse which numbers terror suspects and criminals are calling, or when – a technique that is a mainstay of criminal investigation.

A senior UK official who has worked extensively in counter-terrorism and against organised crime said he feared that Seecrypt would ‘enable the bad guys to get ahead’.

Encrypted emails have been used by terrorists for years, he said, and sometimes proved impossible to crack.

‘We’re in a constant race against them and I suppose this is another issue we’re going to have to deal with,’ he said.

Porton Group, the Dubai-based investment fund behind the app, says it ‘will work with law enforcement agencies to ensure this product does not fall into the wrong hands’.

But because the firm that will actually run the app is registered in the Cayman Islands, neither UK nor other Western security agencies will have any legal right to obtain warrants to gain ‘real-time’ access to unencrypted calls.

Seecrypt is extraordinarily easy to use. Subscribers are given a special, secret number prefixed by the code +281, and can then call or text anyone else with a Seecrypt account.

The app uses the internet to transmit the call, using either a wi-fi connection or an ordinary mobile phone signal. Calls to far-flung parts of the world are therefore free.



Seecrypt functions by generating a one-time cipher composed of two ‘layers’ of 2,048 digits every time subscribers contact each other.

Sources say it would take a super-computer at GCHQ – Britain’s communications intelligence agency – about six months to break a code with just one layer of encryption at this level.

Sir Joseph French, a former head of the Defence Intelligence Staff, is one of Seecrypt’s advisers. He said the app met the encryption standard required for official communications classified as ‘Secret’, and is ‘at the top of the security ladder’.

Seecrypt is the direct descendant of Cellcrypt, Porton Group’s military-grade app, which has been certified as virtually bug-proof by GCHQ. Cellcrypt is widely deployed by Coalition forces in Afghanistan as well as law enforcement and intelligence organisations around the world.

Porton’s chief executive is Harvey Boulter, the businessman who first exposed the bizarre relationship between former Defence Secretary Liam Fox and his bogus ‘special adviser’, Adam Werrity.

It was when the three men met in Dubai in 2011 to discuss the progress of Cellcrypt that Mr Werrity gave Mr Boulter a business card that falsely suggested he had a formal Ministry of Defence position.

In fact, although Mr Werrity had been best man at Dr Fox’s wedding and travelled the world at his side, with his bills paid by a network of political donors, he had neither security clearance nor any official post.

The ensuing scandal forced Dr Fox to resign. He is currently suing Mr Boulter for libel over comments he made in a television interview.

Mr Boulter said Seecrypt expected to have a million subscribers within its first three months, and already had the capacity to go to 25 million.

He maintained it was aimed at ‘anyone who wanted to restore their privacy’, adding that the US had estimated that industrial espionage conducted against private business by China alone was costing the American economy about £750 billion a year.

Mr Boulter admitted: ‘If you’re a law enforcement guy, you might have concerns. For them, it’s not going to be entirely helpful.’

But he continued: ‘People’s privacy has been invaded more and more during the past decade. This will enable you to get some of it back.’

Also working on Seecrypt’s development is Tony Chapa, the former chief technology officer of the US Secret Service – the body responsible for every aspect of the President’s security.

He said: ‘Your mobile phone is the open window on your privacy. Of course Seecrypt could be exploited by villains, but we will do everything we can to stop it being misused.’
