Sikh campaigner for BNP set to become party's first non-white member Rajinder Singh says he supports far-right party's anti-Islam stance A Sikh man who has campaigned for the BNP in support of its anti-Islam stance has been put forward to be the party's first non-white member. Rajinder Singh, who is in his late 70s, has twice lent support to Nick Griffin during the British National party leader's court appearances and appeared in an election broadcast for the party in 2005. There have been suggestions that he could stand as a BNP candidate at next year's general election. Singh, who came to Britain in 1967, used to pen a regular column for the party's Freedom newspaper and has spoken at BNP meetings where he has been vehement in his criticism of Muslims, talking about his experiences at the partition of India in 1947. He was born in Lahore, which became part of Pakistan after partition, and blames Muslims for the death of his father during the bloody split of India. The BNP's senior members voted last weekend to hold a party-wide ballot on whether to allow non-white people to join. That followed the party's agreement to a court order last month to use all reasonable endeavours to revise its constitution so that it did not breach the equality bill in the face of a challenge to its membership policy by the Equality and Human Rights Commission. Martin Wingfield, the communications officer for the party's two MEPs and the its prospective parliamentary candidate for Workington, wrote on his blog in support of admitting non-whites, and Singh in particular. "I say adapt and survive and give the brave and loyal Rajinder Singh the honour of becoming the first ethnic minority member of the BNP," wrote Wingfield. Singh, a former teacher from Wellingborough in Northamptonshire, said he would be "honoured" to become a full member of the BNP. "I got in touch with the BNP on certain core policies that appeal to me," he told the Independent. "I also admire them since they are on their own patch and do not wish to let anyone else oust them from the land of their ancestors." In 2001, after the September 11 attacks on the US, he said he wanted to set up an Asian Friends of the BNP group to act as a supporting body and conduit for funds for people sympathetic to the party's anti-Islamic stance. A BNP spokesman said he would be "quite happy" to have Singh as a member, adding that the retired teacher recognised that he was a "guest of ours". "We have always maintained it's not really about skin colour, it's about ethnicity," he said. He emphasised that the party's membership list, suspended following last month's court order, remained closed for the time being.

Haifa Wehbe, an award-winning Lebanese diva who has been voted one of the world's most beautiful people, is now facing a lawsuit from Egyptian Nubians claiming the song has fuelled discrimination against them and made some Nubian children too afraid to attend school. The row has cast fresh light on the position within Egyptian society of Nubians, who are descended from one of Africa's most ancient black civilisations and yet often face marginalisation in modern Egypt. Wehbe, a 35-year-old model turned actress and singer, is widely regarded as the Middle East's most prominent sex symbol and has been no stranger to controversy in the past. Her skimpy outfits and provocative lyrics (one previous hit was entitled Ya Ibn El Halal, roughly translated as Hey, Good Little Muslim Boy) have earned her the wrath of religious conservatives and forays into the political arena have also sparked debate, including her very public praise for Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah during the 2006 conflict between Israel and Lebanon. The latest accusations of racism came after the release of her new song, Where is Daddy?, in which a child sings to Wehbe, "Where is my teddy bear and the Nubian monkey?". Wehbe has since apologised profusely for the offending lyrics, insisting they were penned by an Egyptian songwriter who told her that "Nubian monkey" was an innocent term for a popular children's game. That hasn't stopped a group of Nubian lawyers submitting an official complaint to Egypt's public prosecutor and calling for the song to be banned. "Everyone is upset," said Sayed Maharous, 49, the Nubian owner of a coffee shop in Cairo. Adul Raouf Mohammed, who runs a nearby store, agreed. "To compare a human being to an animal is insulting in any culture. She has denigrated an entire community of people, and now some of our children are afraid to go into school because they know they will be called monkeys in the playground." The row over Wehbe's song has highlighted a growing sense of communal identity among Nubians in Egypt, a country where the government has traditionally promoted a very monolithic brand of nationalism, sometimes to the exclusion of religious or ethnic minorities. Despite breaking through into the cultural mainstream – several Nubian novelists are well-regarded within Egyptian intellectual circles and Nubian singers such as Mohammed Mounir are among the most popular in the country – Egypt's estimated two million Nubians remain largely invisible on television and film, except as lampooned stereotypes.

A wealthy rabbi financed a drug dealing business and offered cocaine to girls in exchange for sex, a court heard today. Rabbi Baruch Chalomish, 54, rented an apartment where he could "relax and have a party", Manchester Crown Court heard. When police raided the apartment, and his home in an area of Salford heavily populated with Orthodox Jews, they discovered a total of 101 grams (3.6oz) of cocaine and more than £17,000 in cash. Prosecutor Michael Goldwater also told the jury of five men and seven women that Chalomish's business partner, Nasir Abbas, 54, had failed to turn up for the trial and is sought by police. The pair are both charged with possession of cocaine, and possession of cocaine with intent to supply. Chalomish faces two charges on both counts, and Abbas faces one charge on both counts, which he denies. The rabbi, of Upper Park Road, Salford, admits two counts of possession of cocaine but denies intent to supply. Mr Goldwater said police found both defendants at the one-bedroom apartment when they raided it at 9am on Monday 5 January. Abbas was discovered sleeping on the floor of the sitting room, and Chalomish was using the toilet. He said: "Our case is that Abbas and Chalomish were dealing in controlled drugs. They were running, we say, a commercial cocaine supply operation from an apartment-hotel in Shudehill, Manchester. "Rabbi Chalomish also had a substantial store of drugs, cocaine, and cash at his home address." Officers found forms which showed that the apartment was rented from the firm Premier Apartments in Abbas's name. Mr Goldwater said officers discovered evidence of a "substantial drug supply operation". Drug paraphernalia found in the bedroom included a glass tray with 3g (0.1oz) of cocaine on it and a silver spoon, a bowl containing more than 3g (0.1oz) of cocaine, rolled up notes for snorting the drug and credit cards used for chopping the drug into lines. Mr Goldwater said the purity of the cocaine varied in strength from 29 per cent to 82 per cent. Cutting agents to dilute the drug were also discovered, along with around £2,400 in cash, he said. Similar paraphernalia, and quantities of cocaine, were also found at Chalomish's home, mainly in a rear bedroom, along with £15,345 in cash. Mr Goldwater said the jury may find it "significant" that the purity of the cocaine was higher than average. He suggested it could have been cut with legal substances to achieve the average purity level of 28 per cent for cocaine sold in the UK. Mr Goldwater also told the jury that police seized a mobile phone containing a text message from Abbas to an unknown recipient. He said: "That's a drug dealer's message and we say that was sent by Abbas from his phone to somebody who has not been identified and is essentially a statement of account with reference to grams and money and setting out who owed who what." The jury heard that when interviewed by police Abbas said he knew the rabbi as "Shell" and rented the apartment on his behalf and received money from him for the rent. Mr Goldwater said: "He said Shell wanted to relax and have a party at the flat. "He said there had been a lot of people come through the flat in the last 10 days, most of them girls. He mentioned one particular girl, called Emma from Stockport, who stayed for seven days. "She was the only one allowed to go into that bedroom apart from Shell." Abbas told detectives his role was to keep the flat tidy and said that although Shell did not sell drugs, he did not mind if others wanted to consume them and that he liked to impress girls. Mr Goldwater continued: "He said he had seen Shell putting white powder in a glass dish and mixing it with another substance, and anyone visiting was free to help themselves." Abbas also claimed that he and Chalomish were planning to open a restaurant together, funded by the rabbi. Mr Goldwater told the jury that Abbas had a previous conviction for conspiracy to supply Class A drugs in March 1996. The jury heard that the rabbi gave "no comment" interviews to police until his final interview, where he admitted he was a wealthy man who liked to assist less fortunate people. Chalomish said he bought large quantities of cocaine for his own personal use and often used it when he could not sleep. Mr Goldwater said: "The prosecution case is these two men were concerned in a commercial drug supply operation. "We don't completely exclude the possibility that there might be some truth in what Abbas told the police, that some of the drugs were given to young women who came to the flat and that one or more of those young women may have provided sexual services. "We do say that it was essentially a commercial operation. We say their roles were different. Nasir Abbas had the know-how, knew the drugs business, had the contacts, he would know where to obtain the drugs, how much to pay and how to find customers. "Rabbi Chalomish would not have necessarily had the knowledge, we say Chalomish was the financier, he put up the money. "We've been informed that Chalomish is a wealthy man, we've got no reason to doubt that. Nor do we have any reason to believe that his wealth was not achieved perfectly legitimately. "How he got in the drugs business is unclear. He may have got into the drugs business as a drugs user but may have realised there were substantial profits to be made. "A supply on this scale would need a source of capital for financing the purchase of the drugs and rental of the flat so dealing could go on off the street and not at his address." The case was adjourned until 10.30am tomorrow at Manchester Crown Court.

The document outlines the outrageous and unfair treatment of Mr Griffin on Question Time and threatens legal proceedings if a second appearance is not granted during the General Election period.

A carjacker was today convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to a mother-of-four by running her over in her own vehicle. Caroline Johnson was scraping ice from the windscreen of her Citroen Picasso people carrier outside her home in Langley, Berkshire, on December 2 last year when Kevin Richardson, 34, and passenger Karen Napper, 37, jumped in and drove off. She was dragged up to 65ft down the road, suffering serious injuries which have left her wheelchair-bound for the foreseeable future. Mrs Johnson was preparing to take her son to school just before 8am when Richardson and Napper, who had spent the previous night at a drug house, leapt into the car which was parked outside her home. She described the moment the car hit her as it suddenly moved forward, telling the court: 'All I could hear was the engine and the accelerator and the power to the car was revving and then I felt this thud. 'I could feel my body floating in the air and landing on the floor and I was thinking "S***, he's really run me over and he's really hurt me".' She was discovered moments later lying on the tarmac, fighting for her life. An ambulance took her to Wexham Park Hospital in Slough, where she remained for two months. Mrs Johnson was given a blood transfusion and treated for cardiac arrest, a fractured pelvis, an open fracture to the right femur, fractures to both ankles and fractured ribs. Richardson was arrested on December 9 when officers spotted him riding a bicycle. Interviewed by police, he claimed not to remember where he had been on the morning of December 2. Nearly five months later, on May 1, police arrested Napper, who also denied any knowledge of the crime. Prosecutors claim a hair found in the Picasso linked her to the scene and she was arrested again on May 14, this time admitting that the pair had discovered the car with its engine running, after they had been out all night in search of drugs. She told officers they had 'clipped' Mrs Johnson as they left the scene. The vehicle, which other drivers described as 'weaving' across the road as it left the scene, was later found abandoned nearby. Richardson, who had already admitted a lesser charge of grievous bodily harm, aggravated vehicle-taking and dangerous driving over the incident, was found guilty by a jury at Reading Crown Court today of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Napper admitted one charge of aggravated vehicle-taking. Richardson did not react as the guilty verdict was read out two hours and 41 minutes after the jury was sent out. Mrs Johnson, watching proceedings from the public gallery with husband Mark Collins and father Maurice Johnson, sobbed as she heard details of his previous offences following the conviction. The court was told that Richardson has a string of previous convictions, including offences of grievous bodily harm and common assault dating back to 1988. He will be sentenced on December 11. Judge Stephen John told Richardson: 'I think you should recognise at this stage that my view is that this offence can only be described in one way - absolutely despicable.' He said he will now have to decide whether Richardson poses such a risk of serious harm to other members of the public that he should serve an indeterminate prison sentence. The judge praised Mrs Johnson and her family, saying: 'I would like to say that it seems to me she and her family and friends have behaved with conspicuous courage and dignity throughout what must have been an ordeal for them this week.' He thanked the jurors for their efforts in a 'highly distressing case'. Prosecutor Charles Ward-Jackson said: 'This was a particularly shocking case. 'For Mrs Johnson, it was an ordinary winter's morning as she was rushing to take her son to school. 'From nowhere appeared the two defendants, who had been up all night looking for drugs. They pushed her aside, leapt into the car and, with Richardson in the driving seat, deliberately drove at her, causing her horrific and permanent injury. 'We welcome the jury's decision and would like to pay tribute to the courage of Mrs Johnson in giving her evidence in court from her wheelchair. 'I would also like to give praise to the police investigation and, in particular, to DC Bryant for helping the prosecution to build a strong case in difficult circumstances, resulting in the defendants admitting most of the charges and the guilty verdicts today.' Both defendants are from Slough, Berkshire.
