Sex tourism on the rise in Namibia

Sex tourists have started frequenting the country’s major tourist resorts, especially Windhoek, the coast and northern regions, which receive a huge influx of tourists annually. Young local men have been observed with middle aged female European tourists in Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and Henties Bay,

while male sex tourists have maintained their traditional domains in Windhoek and in Ovahimba areas in Opuwo. ale tourists from Europe have become common in Opuwo, where a market for young Ovahimba girls is thriving, and raising concerns among public health and tourism officials. “One has to look at that from two different perspectives. There are pros a cons. From a tourism point of view there’s nothing bad about it but when one considers the risks involved, there is a cause of concern,” said Law Kavari, the Namibia Tourism Board Consumer Services Manager. Kavari said a survey conducted by the NTB had established that of the sex tourists visiting the country, at least five out of ten arriving would have a successful holiday, while the others would either end up being robbed, mugged or contracting HIV. In over 12 years working in the tourism industry, I have seen people coming into the country and having relationships with local girls, and some of them have kept returning and have maintained those relationships,” he said. German tourists are the leading sex tourism consumers in the country, according to the NTB, followed by Angolans and tourists from the Benelux countries. “Germans coming to Namibia are the people that travel most comfortably, they are very relaxed. Almost 90% of the people that travel to Namibia annually are from Germany,” Kavari said. he NTB has identified hotspots where tourists have been observed picking up prostitutes and engaging in risky behaviour. These places include the Royal Hotel, which was closed because of institutionalised prostitution, the area outside the Wine Bar and the area behind the parking at Kalahari Sands Hotel. Windhoek has remained the major hub of sex tourism in Namibia, while Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and Oshikango - which is popular with Angolan sex tourists - have continued to support sex tourism. he Namibian Tourism Board last year embarked on a clean-up operation inspecting accommodation establishments and discovered that there were many unregistered operations, including brothels hosting only certain types of people coming to the country for sex. Some of these places were inhabited mainly by Zambian and Angolan girls and very few Namibians. It is believed that the owners behind syndicates brought the girls into the country for sex tourism. ex tourism is driven by the desire for commercial sex among tourists, often from those countries where prostitution is illegal. The trend, which is popular in South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Tanzania, had for some time been confined to Europe, the United States, Asia and the Caribbean. The World Tourism Organisation (WTO) defines sex tourism as “trips organised from within the tourism sector, or from outside this sector but using its structures and networks, with the primary purpose of effecting a commercial sexual relationship by the tourist with residents at the destination”. The U.N. opposes sex tourism citing health, social and cultural consequences for both tourist home countries and destination countries.
