Mihaloliakos says Golden Dawn in parliament is will of the people
7 Jul 2012

Mihaloliakos reminded parliament that Golden Dawn where there because the people put them there (Eurokinissi)

In his comments regarding the government policy announced by Antonis Samarason Friday, Golden Dawn leader Nikos Mihaloliakos decided to focus on his party's "outsider" status in parliament. "To begin with", Mihaloliakos said opening his speech, "I'd like to send a message to all those inside and outside this room. Golden Dawn is here because that is what 426.000 Greeks wanted. We still find it surprising that some parties choose not to understand the will of the people".

He was clearly talking about Syriza and KKE, whose entire parliamentary sections, exited the room when Mihaloliakos made his way to the podium. The Golden Dawn members on their part, rose to attention as is their much-publicised show of respect towards their leader. "Things have changed", Mihaloliakos said of Syriza, "and they just don't get it. They think that hey can gnaw away at this coalition government and form a government of their own, already discussing the renegotiation of the memorandum

Concerning his own party's stance, Mihaloliakos noted that they would not budge from their positions. "We will not change our positions on crucial matters of foreign policy such as North Epirus, Macedonia and its name, the highly suspicious way the Turkish consulate in Thrace is handling itself, as well as our continuing problems with Turkey. We shall not change our positions on the matter of the memorandum, the crisis itself, illegal immigrants and the issue of the escalating crime rate. For a start, the memorandum needs to be ousted. It's destroying out nation. He also referred negatively to the crucial role that the press and media have played, saying that they "have rushed to inform everyone how bad we are".

What was without doubt the rather strange highlight of his speech was the fact that at one point he referred to an MP (clearly someone in the current parliament) who he said had killed a girl in a car accident and had escaped justice. A voice was heard from the parliament seats, although what was said was not clearly heard, at which point Mihaloliakos took back his point, by saying that "perhaps he had been misinformed".

Following the conclusion of his speech the entire Golden Dawn parliamentary segment rose and left the room along with their leader.
