Sometimes people say that the Holocaust TM "six million" number didn't get put out until the sixties and seventies. This may be the time period when the average American picked up the information, but the claims had been around a lot longer.
See the last line:

The New Funk and Wagnalls Encyc., copyright 1952, vol. two, "Anti-Semitism", pp. 457-459.

"...In Germany, the birthplace of modern anti-Semitism, the movement reached it's climax during the 1930's and 1940's under the National Socialist regime led by the arch anti-Semite Adolf Hitler (q.v.; see also NATIONAL SOCIALISM).... anti-semitic propaganda...consisting basically of racist doctrine, but also including elements of religious hatred and, paradoxically, the identification of Jews with both capitalist and communist elements in Germany and elsewhere. Nazi propaganda constantly increased in virulence and irrationality, with the ever-mounting necessity of imposing upon the Jew the role of scapegoat for the failures of Hitler's regime.

More important than this psychological campaign, however, was the physical persecution of the Jewish community...legislation was enacted which excluded Jews from the protection of German law. The property of Jews was legally expropriated, and concentration camps (q.v.) were set up in which Jews were summarily executed or condemned to slave labor. Sporadic and and local massacres culminated in a natiowide pogrom in 1938, officially organzed by the Nazi Party. After the outbreak of World War II, the tempo of anti-Semitic activities was further increased to a final appalling rate. Throughout Europe, puppet, dependent or military governments of such areas as France, Italy, Poland, and the Ukraine were forced by Germany to adopt anti-Semitic programs. In Germany itself, Hitler announced a "final solution" in the merciless slaughter of the entire Jewish community, a type of crime now recognized under international law as genocide. (q.v.). By the end of the war about six million Jews, including two thirds of the Jewish population of areas in and around Germany, had been exterminated by massacre, systemic execution, and starvation."

[They forgot to mention that something like half of them moved to the USA first.]
