You can cure meats in brine, by smoking, packing in salt, or pickling in jars.

Or just by spam & vienna sausages, corned-beef hash, etc.
Seems a lot easier than doing it the old fashioned way.
Probably cheaper too.
And you can always eat it if society doesn't come apart at the seams a few years from now.
