I have a friend also in the Union military, currently in Afghanistan ... bomb disposal unit. Apparently he got involved primarily for money (having no degree, no marketable skills, working at convenience stores, etc.) but also (I suspect) for the excitement of it all. He's not a complete patriotard. I can't totally blame such people and there are probably thousands of them who join up with mixed motives. The question is how will they come out of it.
