Last Friday I spoke to April Gaede by telephone. She has been on Steele's ranch several times. She had never seen Steele in the saddle and knows of no instances of his ever having ridden a horse. He was also in rather poor physical shape according to her.

She got the impression that the ranch was an expensive toy that he bought for Cyndi and was not very fond of. As far as April knows, Cyndi has never brought a single dollar to the marriage and has always been a kept women. This is consistent with the argument of the prosecution that tried to show that Steele wanted to get rid of his wife.

Early in this thread, I operated under the incorrect assumption that Cyndi was the bread winner with her horses and that Steele was a house husband. He could not have been bringing in any money with his tiny law practice since he had lost all but one case in the last 10 years or so. It appears now that Steele made most all of his money by speculating in stocks (primarily mining) and precious metals. Trial testimony indicated that Cyndi's horse count was down from 30 several years ago to five at the time of Steele's arrest.

From my experience around recovering heart surgery patients, feeding horses would be excellent therapy. Steele could have cut the 70 pound bales of hay down to what he could have handled. Steele had to hire Fairfax to feed the horses because he was writing a love letter to Ukrainian women every four minutes and didn't have time. Horses have to be fed daily. Had this plot succeeded, the horses would not have to have been fed any more. He could have sent them to the glue factory and bought silver with the proceeds.

I missed this press release from the Steele camp. They admit that Steele's mental state may have led him to be exploited by Fairfax. Steele did not know that Fairfax had stolen $45,000 worth of silver from him in early May of 2010 because Fairfax continued to feed Cyndi's horses until 10 June. When he was arrested on 11 June, the FBI seized all of the silver and he could not have known anything was missing until it most of it was returned on 16 June. Steele has claimed in a rant from jail that he had his son Rex check the "hidey hole" for the silver and it was missing. This is impossible because the FBI already had seized the silver before it could be checked by Rex.

A defense dealing with mental state might help explain why a person with significant intelligence could so easily be ripped off by one such as FBI informant Larry Fairfax, who stole significant amounts of property from the Steele’s home as he was performing handyman work in early May 2010.

For example, it its February 9th news piece headlined “Steele’s lawyers hint at defense plan”, the eastern Washington Spokesman-Review reporter reveals her misunderstanding by stating, “That disease or defect has ‘bearing on (Steele’s) guilt or his lack of a knowing or intentional mental state,’ according to the document, filed Monday by Steele’s attorneys…”.

The Media has taken information about the defense of Mental Disease, Defect or Condition and has made incorrect assumption(s) because of the reporter’s lack of knowledge as to how that defense might be used. Additionally the Spokesman-Review has a track record of applying negative labels and references to Mr. Steele, in an effort to create prejudice or give him a negative public image.

A defense dealing with mental state might help explain why a person with significant intelligence could so easily be ripped off by one such as FBI informant Larry Fairfax, who stole significant amounts of property from the Steele’s home as he was performing handyman work in early May 2010. Having Mr. Steele’s attorneys file such a motion does not mean he is guilty or assure a particular defense strategy. I had missed this comment in Steele's local fishwrap. It is unusual because it comes from someone who knows him and has no dog in this fight. It is clear from the post that Steele was sane once upon a time. At this point in the past there would have been no chance that Steele would have committed a crime like this. This poster also gives us more information about the character of the scumbag Fairfax.

The authenticity of the damning evidence of the letters written by Steele to his Ukrainian girlfriend was still in dispute at the time of this post. I agree with this poster that the witness tampering charge was bogus. It seems to me that this was covered by husband/wife and attorney/client privilege.

However this same Steele admitted at sentencing that he wrote the steamy love letters to his Ukrainian girlfriend from his jail cell. He also dared the judge to set the Guinness Book of World Records with the sentence that he handed down. There is no other possibility than aorta surgery making him go crazy.

what is wrong with you idiots!? annette, where are you reading that cyndi is terrified for her life? sure, everybody has a right to be safe and secure. but how is campaigning to have your husband free on bail to be interpreted as evidence of fear?

i have avoided posting on this issue, as i have worked for edgar when the steele family was new to the area in late summer of 1997, and on a couple other occaisions, last being in the fall of 2005, milling lumber for sheds for their appaloosas. i admit, i am not a close intimate family friend, but i am a pretty good judge of character, and edgar has NEVER come across as anything other than a very logical, level headed, and rational individual.

also, any time i witnessed him having any form of interaction with his family, he was always the epitome of a "ward cleaver"ish husband and father. i know it might come off sounding corny, but, really...the guy had any number of domestic stressors that ANY man working on making a house a home, and a functioning horse ranch, and he never took any thing (that i saw evidence of) and made the family his outlet for anything. he would almost as if a button on a remote was pushed, go from an animated narrative of how he was continually looked at as "the new sucker with deep pockets" that hired help was usually trying to get one over on him, and when one of his brood would need his attention, instantly be able to talk to and be their husband or father, and assist them with not so much as a hint of being annoyed. i would be inclined to feel that if a man has enough contempt, or whatnot that he is irrational to the point of murder, he would have more than likely have been one to snap at you if you were even mildly inconvenient.

I missed part of this old Steele interview given to an Idaho paper when he was in the Moscow jail awaiting sentencing. He claims that his wife did not want him to testify. He also claimed to be worried that he couldn't control his temper under questioning by the prosecutor. He was supposedly worried that the prosecutor would play the recording clips over and over for the jury. In a previous rant written from jail, he blamed his wife for wanting him not to take the stand.

More likely the truth is that the prosecutor would have torn him to shreds on the stand over the contradictions in his case. It would have been interesting to hear him explain the steamy love letters to Tatyan written from his jail cell. The lack of any draft or outline of a book would have been damning as well.

It is interesting to note that Steele admits not to have had a paying legal case in the 10 years before he was arrested. He is therefore likely to have made all of his money in speculation of mining stocks and precious metals. He was sitting on about 8,000 troy ounces of silver just before he was arrested which is currently worth about $240,000.

COEUR d'ALENE - Edgar J. Steele says he was targeted for federal charges and "railroaded" by the government for his advocacy of politically incorrect causes. "I say things they don't want said to the American public," Steele said in a brief phone interview Wednesday from Latah County jail in Moscow, where he is being held until sentencing in August. "And I say things in a particularly persuasive manner." He was convicted of a murder-for-hire plot to kill his longtime wife Cyndi Steele. At 65, the retired "attorney for the damned" from Sagle, said he could spend the rest of his life in prison for the plot and related charges.

While locked up, he said, "I'm going to be writing." He has plans for two books so far, including one about his case. The other will delve into philosophy and religion. He also plans to pen numerous Internet essays. He said he had been working on research for a book before he was arrested one year ago. He had intended to title it: "Love and other four letter words: Invasion of Planet Earth by teenage mail-order Russian brides from cyber space."

During his trial this spring in federal court in Boise, prosecutors said he wanted to be with a young Ukrainian woman he had met online bad enough that he hired a hit man. He said he began researching the "mail-order bride scam" after he was approached by a man from Chicago who reported getting scammed for $4,000. Steele initially refused to look into the matter, but eventually saw a book in it. "Who is the real victim? That's what I planned to answer," he said. He found that both the American men and Ukrainian women were victims, while those helping make the connections preyed on them both.

Audio recordings captured secretly by an FBI informant, his handyman turned hit man Larry Fairfax, 50, are fakes, he said. He said the incriminating parts of the conversations, which were played during the trial, were manufactured and edited in. Fairfax was sentenced last month for making a pipe bomb which was placed under Cyndi Steele's SUV, though it never detonated. "I didn't have those conversations with that guy," Steele said. The jury of 11 women and one man disagreed, finding him guilty on all charges. He's appealing.

He said charges were brought against him shortly after he had posted a message on his website, www.conspiracypenpal.com. He announced his intention to return to top form after a time of inactivity from his writing and speaking gigs due to health problems. On April 25, 2010, he wrote: "I'm coming back soon ... and now I'm really pissed off ..."

He was arrested in June 2010. He hadn't had a paying case as an attorney in 10 years, but was still a target of groups like the Anti-Defamation League, Southern Poverty Law Center, and "10 others, easily," he said.

Following the jury's verdict, prosecutors and FBI agents working on the case said they had never heard of Steele before Fairfax came forward to report what he had been hired to do.

Steele said he regrets not taking the witness stand in his own defense during trial. He said his defense attorneys recommended he not take the stand, as did his wife. "I couldn't trust any of my decisions," he said. He said he was concerned about testifying because he was very angry and didn't know how he would respond under cross examination by a female prosecutor, Assistant U.S. Attorney Traci Whelan. He said he wasn't particularly worried about allowing jurors to hear his voice, giving them something to compare with the audio recordings.

His primary concern was his expectation that with him on the stand prosecutors would play clips, over and over again, of the audio recordings. "They could keep me on the stand for days doing that," he said.

Where´d you get those photos, I have trouble believing all that belongs to the same property, count how many garages there are, and what´s with the five mini trucks, is he running a golf course? The big barn looks like expensive overkill for someone who only casually owns a few horses, and what do I see in there, a big boat?

This is Steele's ranch if you had read the previous parts of this thread. It is for sale at Coldwell Banker for about $1 million at http://vnnforum.com/showthread.php?t...&page=137#2739 . You bring up an interesting point. Steele was an accountant first. He bought his wife an expensive horse ranch and she never made a dime on it. It was an expensive money loser. At the time of his arrest she was down to five horses. Steele has never been seen in the saddle or been heard of being in the saddle by April Gaede. I believe that this is one of the reasons that he wanted to get rid of Cyndi when he went crazy from aorta surgery.

I was not required to provide my tax returns when I did early retirement at the age of 62. Payments will be reduced if your income is above a certain amount but this story sounds bogus to me. By Steele's own admission, he was drawing Social Security at the time of his arrest and had been doing so for some time. He was just under 65 at the time of his arrest. His remark that his tax returns showed no income is not believable. If you have no income you are not required to file tax returns.

Steele's new attorney in San Francisco filed a motion on 5 April, 2012 with the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals for summary reversal of the judge's denial of a new trial for Steele. See http://www.stopnetspend.com/steele/appeal/reversal.pdf . This motion was denied nearly two months ago and not a word was posted on Steele's website. His appeal was due on 22 August and I cannot find any sign of it on the Court of Appeals website. If his attorney has missed this deadline, he is in prison for life.
