OK..... I had the day off from work and as usual my GF and I decided that we would go trash picking for thingsto sell at the flea market over the weekend.... We make about an average of 230 dollars a weekend selling trash picked items there.
As a change of pace we went to a rather large shopping area near by and I started checking out the dumpsters behind national chain stores you all know.... I hit quite a few of them very quickly and scored some serious items...... new or returned items that these kike stores throw away.... In about an hour and a half I scored..... A motorolla surfboard wireless n modem NEW, that sells for 120 to 140 in stores... An at&t office phone NEW....no idea what the value is. 100 foot range wireless headphones NEW that go for at least 30 bucks A NEW 15 dollar hair cutting kit (trimmers) 5 NEW 8 dollar jar candles 2 NEW 30 dollar limited edition "uncharted 3" drakes deception video games for pc and mac WITH the full 12o page walkthrough guide. A new and very useful electric fly zapper A king sized NEW very plush down matress pad, still in its packaging A NEW discovery kids tent (no idea what the cost) Of all things a NEW still in the box bay west touch free motion activated towel dispenser, Im sure they cost a lot to buy for a business. It would seem that these big chain stores make so much damn profit that they can throw this shit away..... fuck them, I'm going to make a healthy profit of hundreds from these sleazy crooks. "Davids Bridal" had a whole dumpster Full of dresses, bras, and expensive womens shoes that they cut up with scissors and tossed like trash... Unreal. Go and get you some white people......

Any particular stores you'd recommend for this activity? Are some more profitable than others? I thought returns generally went back to the warehouse or product manufacturer.

There is a big chain store near me called "Big Lots" that for whatever reason simply throws the stuff away. The Staples dumpster was LOADED with electronics and endless ink and toner cartridges. The video game store called "game stop" had some freshly wrapped video games in the dumpster. There is a local store that sells everything from toys to pots and pans that had a load of good stuff and we didn't even scratch the surface of what they had in the 4 dumpsters. The store is called "Tuesday Morning". I don't bother looking for food but I saw boxes of energy drinks and cases of chips in the Big Lots dumpsters that were unopened.

I was renovating a Wal-mart pharmacy, enlarging it, when I went to throw some stuff in the dumpster. I found about 200 rod 'n reel sets and all kinds of sporting goods in the damned thing. I cherry-picked the fishing poles and gave them to friends as gifts. They made each person feel special, and it was really cool to watch their eyes light up. There was all kinds of good stuff in there but I didn't have time to go thru it all.

I intend to give dumpster diving a try, no doubt about it. How often are the dumpsters locked? What about police/rent-a-cop hassles?

All that new shit you are finding is probably employee theft stash. Anyway it must depend on location because that kind of score would not happen in these parts.

Once an employee places an item(s) in the trash, they are legally "refuse" or fair game. A rent-a-cop might want to boo you up, to grab the goodies for himself.

Dumpster diving and curb pile diving is THE best. Absolutely. The rush you feel when you get something great for free because you took the time to hunt for it a little bit is wonderful! I love it when I find easily restorable furniture by the side of the road. That just makes my day. But yeah, socking it to those shitty chain stores RULES, and good for you for doing it! May you find everything you're looking for! Also, keep an eye out for side of the freeway finds! Gods, I'm such a scrounger, hahahaha!

Generally they are. The company i work for gets back hundreds of returns weekly but i don't doubt that some of it just gets tossed out.

I remember one time I was driving through Fayetteville, Tennessee. There was a gang of Amish guys raiding a dumpster behind a Sherwin-Williams store getting gallon buckets of paint out of it and loading up their horse drawn wagon with it. - funny sight. I wish I had had a camera with me.

![]() http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_v._Greenwood Don't worry much about cops. Worst thing ever happened to me is they just tell you to leave. DO NOT open a gate, or climb over or under anything. Opening a dumpster isn't criminal. Don't go around anything that is obviously meant to keep the public out. The worst case scenario is some bored, hostile cops and ms junior prosecutress will try to get you for trespassing, but it won't stick unless you are being an asshole and refusing to leave, or coming back to a location where someone has told you to stay away from, or otherwise being a problem by leaving a big mess(nigs and bums will dig through trash like a weasel and just toss it out on the ground) or making too much noise late at night etc. Quote:
Security guards are actually worse than policemen. Some of them feel insecure about their lack of real power and think they need to up the ante, scare you away. Don't worry if they approach you, but don't keep going to that location. I had a security guard downtown(KC) put his hand on his pistol(but he didn't actually draw on me) and scream "return the towel dispenser to the dumpster, NOW!!!" as I was walking back to my truck with it. An expensive hotel was being refurbished and there was some ritzy high-nickel stainless stuff in the roll-off on the sidewalk(totally legal until someone tells you to get out of there). I started laughing but I threw it at the side of the dumpster BANG and bouced it into the street. He kept screaming "come here and return the dispense to the dumpster!" and I said "fuck you" but I left and didn't bother that one again. Not a good way to handle it but the guy was really overdoing it. Screaming like a drill sargeant, for little reason. Makes me "passive aggressive". And grabbing at a weapon? I hope that idiot gets shot. Some security guards are pretty decent. Usually the older guys just say "hey you can't be doing that here, gonna make me look bad" etc and ask you to not keep hitting that one. If there was really good stuff, I'd go back for it in the daytime when the guy wasn't on the job. Most people ignore you, don't hesitate to do it in broad daylight. Most cops are actually pretty cool about it. In large cities they are too busy with real crime. Some are even friendly and apologetic. I never even had one get rude with me. Closest was an old guy that questioned me about the stuff in the back of my truck and asked me to show him what was in the boxes. I showed him and he said "look, I see what you're doing and I really don't care, but don't come back to THIS one(dumpster), ok?". The situation was mostly my fault because I stayed out too late that night, about 5 am, and was in a residential(apartment complex) dumpster. Some lady in the building was getting up early for work and her vehicle was parked near the dumpster. I was working near her car and she was afraid to walk out there alone so she called the police. Embarrassing, but no big deal. That was a good dumpster. High rent with lots of medical students. Some drug rep was dumping tons of unopened goodies by the case, probably reporting them as distributed. I got a very common size and voltage of button battery(rolls of four) out of a hundred or so little digital alarm clocks and sold them for 80 bucks. They had little plastic slips between them and the coils, so they were fresh new batteries. The clocks had some drug name on them and a cartoon cat sleeping peacefully. Maybe ten minute's work invested. Also there was a ton of electronics being thrown away there for some reason. Some of it really was trashed, but more than half of what I took home was just wired wrong or had a dent or a scrape. DVD players, monitors, etc. I got dozens of little vacuum sealed 2lb foil bags of 100% arabica coffee with some anti-psychotic med sticker on them, and gave to my parents who are caffeine addicts. Bags of pens galore, corkscrews, flashlights, all sorts of stuff brand new in unopened boxes, but all with drug names on them. Just that one dumpster lol

PCS day was always an adventure in the army. When we were leaving Ft. Lee for Germany, we got rid of a bunch of our shit. The old man took the gas grill (that had a leaky gas hose) around front for garbage pick up. He came back around front with the next load that included the empty gas cylander - the grill was already fucking GONE! 1 minute, 30 seconds flat and nobody to be seen walking down the street with it!
We figured it was the Puerto Ricans across the street. |

If you want to make money at it, you need to be checking all the roll-off dumpsters you see. These are the big ones that are normally on construction sites. Don't go on construction sites if they are fenced in, especially at night.
They often set these on a sidewalk, or even out in the street, because there isn't room to put them anywhere else. Downtown areas where they are tearing down an old building or tearing out a lot of stuff to put in something better... those will make you money. I made more money at that than any job I've had, until I followed Craig Cobb's advice and came to work in the ND oil fields. If they are on the sidewalk or in the street, they are absolutely fair game. FBI loves stealing trash, and you should too. Supreme court says it's ok. Get in there and don't leave unless someone tells you to. Just be polite and quick. Sometimes I even had contractors approach me and ask what I was doing, then direct their guys to take all the metals straight to my truck lol Sometimes I was invited onto the site itself, to take the metals as they were removed. I was saving them time and money by keeping that dumpster from filling up so fast. I once paid my rent in about 15 minutes, high nickel stainless flashing from an office building roof. The dumpster was half full of it and i almost missed it because of the dirty buckets and tar paper covering it. This was a half-high roll-off put right out in the street with a few cones around it to keep drunks from smashing into it. Also got a big aluminum satellite dish from that one. ALL aluminum, except the bolts holding it together. Everything on the roof had to go and they didn't seem to know or care what it was worth. Reminds me, learn the dumpsters in your area. Metal recycling dumpsters are usually painted bright red or yellow or orange and say something about metals on them. Don't bother those, or you're thieving. They get money for those metals. Brown or green dumpsters are just going to a landfill, fair game. You are only stealing from the dirt, or the smarter mexicans. Look for other trash mixed in. If there is nothing but metal in the dumpster, be careful. Walk around it and check what is printed on it.

if your GF will do that, then she's a keeper.
There are a lot of jews around here, and they won't throw out anything worth more than a nickel. The'll take that nickel item and try to sell if on craigslist for $20
