Panic over:

The world famous Goodyear Blimp was flying high over the Olympics opening ceremonies last Friday, but media reports and social media rumours mistakenly identified the Blimp as an Unidentified Flying Object.

Thousands of people went online to report the UFO as it flew over the Olympic Park last Friday. However, leading tyre brand Goodyear confirms that it was in fact its iconic Blimp, currently being used by a TV network to capture aerial footage.

It’s not the first time the Goodyear Blimp has been mistaken for a UFO. Earlier this year during the Blimp’s Spirit of Safety Tour, reports of a spaceship floating across the sky at night were a common occurrence every time the airship took flight at night.

Michelle Fisher, spokesperson for Goodyear, said: “We’re honoured to be providing a bird’s eye view of this phenomenal sporting event for our American colleagues. However, as we are not an official sponsor of, or supplier to, the Olympics, we have to fly the Blimp unbranded for the duration of the games.

“It’s for this reason and when illuminated at night that many people mistake the Goodyear Blimp for a UFO. I’m sure this won’t be the last time we cause such a stir, but we want people to feel at ease and reassure them that they won’t be abducted by aliens anytime soon.”

French activists of Femen movement were arrested in London during the femen topless protest near the London Bridge. London police followed femen activists from the hotel where they all spent a night. Femen accuses these states of simulating democratic changes regarding the position of women. With the support of the I.O.C, these Islamist governments use the participation of women in the Olympic games to hide thousands of victims and dead. If the I.O.C keeps flirting with radical Islam, new olympic disciplines, such as stoning or speed raping will be added to the competition.

A Lithuanian accountant who made Nazi salutes and aimed monkey chants at black players during an Olympic basketball match has insisted such behaviour is acceptable in his home country.

Petras Lescinskas, 36, has been fined £2,500 after he was seen raising his arm several times while placing his other hand over his top lip to imitate Hitler's moustache.

He was among a group of Lithuanians heard making obscene noises during their country’s match against Nigeria on Tuesday.

His conviction came only three days after a Lithuanian was pictured making similar gestures at black stewards during their team's match against Argentina on Sunday.


Lescinskas admitted racially aggravated behaviour when he appeared at Stratford Magistrates' Court yesterday.

His behaviour was so appalling that it forced some families to move seats inside the basketball arena, the court heard.

But Lescinskas's solicitor told the hearing that his client believed his behaviour was acceptable in Lithuania and he had done it before at previous sports matches.



The defence failed to impress District Judge Sonia Sims, who fined the Lithuanian £2,500 and ordered him to pay £85 costs.

'Your behaviour was despicable', the judge told him. 'You have been intolerant of a country in a racist fashion towards others who don’t deserve abuse for their race, colour or creed.



'As for the gesture, which has been described as a Nazi salute, it is a direct insult to all of those who lost their lives in the Holocaust and the affect on generations since.

'I do not accept that this is acceptable behaviour in your country.

'That behaviour I am sure is unacceptable to your fellow countrymen who no doubt want to distance themselves from your actions.

'The Olympics is a wondrous event not only for Great Britain but for all the nations who are competing, participating or watching on television.

'This type of conduct tarnishes the whole ethos of the Games.'

The court heard that Lescinskas was part of a group of rowdy Lithuanian fans supporting their team against Nigeria in the Olympic Park on July 31.

He admitted having a drink before the basketball match, which his country won 72-53, but insisted he was not drunk when the players stepped on court.

Becky Owen, prosecuting, said other fans were forced to move seats because of his behaviour.

She said: 'The defendant was one of a large number of Lithuanian supporters being generally loud and offensive.

'In particular the group were heard at times to be making monkey-style noises when the Nigeria team had possession of the ball.

'He was arrested because he was seen making a Nazi salute on a number of occasions while placing his finger across the top of his lip.'


Police officers at the scene could not confirm he directly made monkey noises - but the court heard it was accepted he was part of the group that made them.

Lescinskas, still dressed in his green Lithuanian basketball supporter’s tank top in court, apologised for his behaviour in his native language.

Through an interpreter, he said: 'I regret my actions, I am sorry.'

Ms Gill, defending, said her client believed that his actions were acceptable in his country and he had done it before at previous sports games.

She said: 'He says he has travelled to other countries and supported in this way. He has realised it is not appropriate to behave in this way.

'He regrets his actions and is deeply remorseful.'

Lescinskas, who has a wife and children back in Lithuania, is due to return home when the Olympic Games finish on August 13.

A few weeks ago, I contacted Anna Hutsol, the founder and leader of Ukraine’s FEMEN movement, for an interview via Facebook. It proved difficult, as Anna is not only extremely busy but we speak different languages and required the services of a translator.

FEMEN have risen from being a local protest group in Kiev, known for their use of nudity and street theatre to protest Ukrainian sex tourism, to an international phenomenon tackling issues such a nuclear power and Saudi bans on women driving. The frank sexuality of their protests have gained them worldwide media attention, and they continue to build social media solidarity with other activist groups through FEMEN - International Support Team (FIST). They even, famously, bullied Mark Zuckerberg into reinstating their Facebook account after it was removed due to all the topless posts.

This morning, I finally received my answers in broken English. Anna did not address all my questions, but she did provide some insights into FEMEN’s origins, its mission, and its future.

I have taken the liberty of “cleaning up” the English responses. (* I have also included the raw translations of answers following, in case there is any misunderstanding.)



OSOCIO: How was the idea of FEMEN first conceived?

Anna: It was not difficult, as everyone knows how many problems are here in Ukraine and as Ukrainian girls we feel that every day in our minds and bodies. So all we needed was to be brave enough to tell the world about it. That’s why we decided to show that women are protesting, and to use our bodies as weapon in the fight.

OSOCIO: Have your objectives changed since then?

Anna: Yes, we have added many objectives to our program. But like in the beginning we still demand to stop sex tourism and prostitution in Ukraine. We demand to
let women develop themselves.

OSOCIO: How do you respond to critics who say that topless protest objectifies women?

OSOCIO: How do male supporters fit in to FEMEN?

Anna: We have many men who support us and even help in our work. Men who are ready to see women as strong people can help FEMEN girls. We have many supporters who help FEMEN with donations. Also we have photographers help us [by donating services] and even some men who come to our performances to protect the girls from police. So we are not against men, but we want to be independent from them.

OSOCIO: What will be the future of FEMEN in 5 years? In 10?

Anna: We want to create a new style of living for women that will mean to being active and developing themselves. For that we are planning to go to Europe to open branches in each European capital. We will teach all women to be free and always get all they need. Soon FEMEN will be an international movement.

The most famous stunt involved an oil barrel painted with Milosevic's picture. Otpor rolled it down a busy street, asking people to insert a coin in a slot for the privilege of whacking Milosevic with a bat. This was Otpor's favorite kind of prank, a dilemma action: It left the regime damned either way. If the government had let the barrel roll, it would have looked weak. But when the police stepped in, the optics were no better: The Otpor members fled, and the opposition TV the next day showed pictures of the police "arresting" a barrel and loading it into the police van. The country sniggered at these pranks -- and signed up for Otpor.

Shachko is a Ukrainian women's rights activist, and her weapons are attached to her pale, petite body like the two halves of an apple.

Her weapons are the symbol of femininity, motherhood and sexuality, and filmmakers and marketers have used them millions of times to sell everything under the sun, from yogurt to vacuum cleaners. They have put Oksana and her fight onto cover pages around the world, and they've made her and her fellow activists into the cover girls of an international protest movement -- the icons of a naked rebellion.

Marxism Instead of Marriage

They were in their late teens, the oldest in her early 20s, when it all began, says Oksana, and their parents hoped that they would get married early. The creators of the movement are Oksana, Anna Hutsol and Sasha Shevchenko. At first, they lived in Khmelnytskyi, a city with 300,000 inhabitants and two nuclear reactors.

There were hardly any jobs to be had, and the men drank. The girls, for their part, spent long evenings discussing philosophy, Marxism and the situation of women in post-Soviet society. They decided that instead of getting married, they would bring about change.



There were only three of them at first, but now the movement, whose ranks include students, journalists and economists, has spread throughout Ukraine and includes more than 300 women. Calling themselves "Femen," they have started a movement that has also caught hold among women in Tunisia and the United States. It's a movement that even encourages experienced women's rights activists to undress.

"Maybe I'll need political asylum," says Oksana. "What they're accusing me of is absurd." She and her attorney have arrived at the Interior Ministry.

Femen isn't alone with its neo-feminist form of protest. Some of its contemporaries include the Pussy Riot collective in Moscow, with their feminist punk rock, who are now in detention awaiting trial. They could face seven years in prison for having stormed the pulpit of a church and raged against Putin. There are the Slutwalks in the United States. And there is Egyptian art student Aliaa Magda Elmahdy, who undressed to fight for her sexual self-determination and whose photo went around the world after she published it on her blog. A branch of Femen was even established in Tunisia recently.

Sometimes they meet in real life, the old and the new feminists, the one version of Europe and the other, and sometimes they use each other for their respective ends.

Other things that stand out are one of them was on bail - one condition was not to leave the country. She left the country in a blaze of publicity with nothing done. One article made a point of saying that they roped in French housewives to strip off in a burqa protest and the French police did nothing, just enjoyed watching.

I'll be interested to see if they get any sort of penalty for today's caper. If not, the hole in my tinfoil may begin letting through thoughts about sanctioned stunts in order to make marxist ideals popular and trendy and something that young women can get behind.....
