Turkish caliph says Syrian government used chemical weapons Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused the Syrian government of using chemical weapons despite a new UN finding on the possible use of the nerve agent, sarin, by foreign-backed militants in the Arab country. In an interview with American television channel NBC on Thursday, Erdogan said he believes that Syria has used chemical weapons, crossing a “red line” set by US President Barack Obama, without providing details on when or where they were used. “We want the United States to assume more responsibilities and take further steps. And what sort of steps they will take, we are going to talk about this,” said Erdogan, calling for stronger US action against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. http://www.presstv.ir/detail/2013/05...a-of-using-cw/

Syrian rebels cut major desert road A Syrian activist says rebels have been able to cut a newly built desert road linking the capital Damascus with the northern city of Aleppo. Rami-Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said Saturday rebels took over two army posts on the road near Aleppo after days of fighting. The regime built the desert road as a backup route after rebels captured the town of Maaret al-Numan in October cutting the main highway between the country’s two largest cities. The Observatory also reported clashes in the town of Qusayr, near the border with Lebanon. The fighting in the town came a day after U.N. commissioner for human rights Navi Pillay expressed alarm over Qusayr, which has been besieged by Syrian troops for several weeks. http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News...sert-road.html

Here's a question for you muzzie fuck-wit: if you are so dedicated to the Islamist cause and the Al-Nusra Front then why haven't you done what some of your co-religionists have done and gone to fight the 'evil dictator'. I'll tell you why, because you are a chicken shit who doesn't really believe he will get his wine and houris in the end and it is oh so much easier to encourage everyone else to go out and fight physical jihad rather than doing it yourself.

Hezbollah-style resistance movement forms in Syria: Iran cmdr.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad waving to supporters (file photo) Sat May 11, 2013 8:8AM GMT Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi says a Hezbollah-style resistance movement has emerged in Syria. “Thanks to [Syrian President] Bashar al-Assad’s strategic role, a popular resistance with the same nature as that of Lebanon’s Hezbollah has taken shape across Syria and is solidifying,” Firouzabadi said on Friday. The top Iranian commander noted that the resistance in Syria has emerged triumphant owing to Assad’s prudence in dealing with the extremist groups and the hegemonic powers as well as the Syrian nation’s support for him. Firouzabadi argued that the war in Syria has come to an end, saying, “Therefore, the enemies had better not interfere in Syria’s affairs anymore.” On Friday, Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations said al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front terrorist group had claimed responsibility for at least 600 acts of terror over the past year. Diplomats have said the UN Security Council will add the al-Nusra Front to its sanctions blacklist next week. As a result, the group will be subject to a global asset freeze from Tuesday onwards. However, the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has been in direct cooperation with the terrorist al-Nusra Front in Syria. The Syrian government had asked the Security Council to blacklist al-Nusra last month, but the request was blocked by Britain and France. The unrest in Syria began in March 2011; and many people, including large numbers of soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the violence. The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals. |

Fighting against Syrian government not jihad: Tunisia Mufti Othman Battikh, the Mufti of Tunisia (file photo) Sat Apr 20, 2013 1:34PM GMT Tunisia’s senior cleric, Othman Battikh, has described calls for jihad against the government in Syria a “huge mistake” that is not permitted under Islam. The Mufti of Tunisia said during a press conference on Friday that a “Muslim mustn’t fight a Muslim” under any pretext. Battikh stressed that those who went to fight in Syria under the banner of Jihad were “fooled and have been brainwashed.” His remarks came at a time many of Tunisian youths are being recruited by terrorist networks to go to Syria and fight against the government of President Bashar al-Assad. The Tunisian cleric also said he considered what has become known as "sex jihad" a form of prostitution and adultery. He said 16 Tunisian girls have been so far deceived and sent to Syria to take part in the so-called sex or marriage jihad, adding this is a moral depravity. Syria has been gripped by a deadly unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of government forces, have been killed in the violence. Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals. The Syrian government says the West and its regional allies including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are supporting the militants. |

German journalist held by Assad militia
A German journalist is being held by Syrian forces in the northern battlefield city of Aleppo, a Berlin newspaper reported online Monday, citing his call for help via a mobile phone text message. Armin Wertz, an Indonesia-based veteran reporter writing for German and Asian media, had entered the conflict-torn country from neighboring Turkey in early May, said the Tagesspiegel daily, for which he works on a freelance basis. In a first SMS sent on May 5, Wertz had told a friend and colleague in Germany that he was being held by Syrian police in Aleppo, but asked that his detention not be made public. The journalist had however followed up with a second text message Sunday, explicitly appealing for help. The report said Wertz was expected to be transferred to the Syrian coastal city of Latakia, which is under the control of regime forces. The Tagesspiegel said Wertz had not said what he was being accused of but that he had entered the country without a press visa. A spokeswoman for the German foreign ministry said it was urgently seeking to verify reports that a German national had been arrested in Aleppo and that it had contacted the Syrian embassy in Berlin. http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News...in-Syria-.html

US, Britain increase pressure on Russia over Syria
Posted 2 hours 53 minutes ago The United States and Britain have stepped up pressure on Russia over Syria, but US president Barack Obama warned old suspicions could trample new "common ground" on the crisis. Mr Obama and British prime minister David Cameron sought to build momentum behind a new US-Russia sponsored conference on Syria, now expected to take place in June, as they met at the White House. "Syria's history is being written in the blood of her people, and it is happening on our watch," Mr Cameron said. "The world urgently needs to come together to bring the killing to an end." Mr Cameron, fresh from a trip to Russia - which is one of president Bashar al-Assad's few remaining backers - said he believed Washington, London and Moscow had found "common ground" on the crisis, which has left tens of thousands dead. Mr Obama said Russia had an "interest as well as an obligation" to help end the violence, saying he had delivered a similar message to president Vladimir Putin, ahead of secretary of state John Kerry's Moscow visit last week. "Our basic argument is that as a leader on the world stage, Russia has an interest, as well as an obligation, to try to resolve this issue in a way that can lead to the kind of outcome that we'd all like to see over the long term," he said. But Mr Obama warned it would be tough to keep Russia on board, saying: "I don't think it's any secret that there remains lingering suspicions between Russia and other members of the G8 or the West." And Mr Obama said that even with Russia aboard, the situation in Syria may simply be too severe to be solved, noting that Iran, Lebanese militia Hezbollah and Al-Qaeda-allied extremists were all involved. "Once ... the furies have been unleashed ... it's very hard to put things back together," he said. Mr Cameron was more optimistic, telling National Public Radio that Mr Kerry made a "real breakthrough" in getting Russia to agree to a conference, though admitted he and Mr Putin had differences on Syria. But he said the Russian leader was "keen now to move from the generalities of having a peace conference to talking through the specifics of how we can make (this) work". Mr Obama has resisted directly arming the Syrian opposition but - with reports Syria has used chemical weapons, which would cross what the US leader has dubbed a "red line" - is under increasing pressure to do so. The president said last week that Washington had a moral and national security obligation to stop the slaughter in Syria, but said he wanted more concrete evidence that chemical weapons had been used. Mr Cameron and Mr Obama met amid indications that Mr Assad's regime may not be hustled swiftly out of power, as his army gained ground in the strategic central province of Homs. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights watchdog reported that the military, backed by the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah, seized much of the strategically vital Qusayr area, which connects the capital Damascus to the coast. In southern Daraa, which nurtured the Syrian uprising against Mr Assad, the army secured control of the town of Khirbet Ghazaleh, on the route between Damascus and the Jordanian border. The Observatory said on Monday that it has now documented the deaths of some 82,257 people since the beginning of the conflict in March 2011, including 34,473 civilians. Reverberations meanwhile mounted from a string of deadly bombings in the Turkish town of Reyhanli, which the Ankara government blamed on Damascus, further increasing regional tension. Thousands of Turks took to the streets to urge their government to rethink its support for rebels fighting Mr Assad, warning that the decision had provoked reprisals against Turkey, including the bombings, which killed 48 people In New York, the UN Security Council demanded that those behind the bombing be brought to justice and urged governments to support Turkey's investigation. Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is due to meet Mr Obama at the White House on Thursday, with Syria also topping their agenda. In another sign of accelerating diplomacy, the Kremlin said Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu will hold talks on Tuesday with Mr Putin amid concerns Moscow plans to deliver advanced missiles to the Damascus regime. UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon will visit Russia on Friday to discuss Syria, Moscow said. Arrangements for peace talks sponsored by Moscow and Washington, which the state department said on Monday would probably now take place in June, rather than this month as first hoped, remain unclear. Syrian opposition forces said they will consult with backers Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey before deciding whether to take part in the talks.
