Researchers discovered remedy against insomnia

http://med.news.am/eng/news/922/rese...-insomnia.html

Scientists think they have discovered the switch in the brain that tells our bodies when to go to sleep, Daily Mail reports.

The discovery, made by neurologists at Oxford University, could pave the way for a treatment of insomnia.

The scientists think the switch works by regulating neurons, or nerve cells, in the brain.

Professor Gero Miesenböck, whose team conducted the research, said: ‘When you’re tired, these neurons in the brain shout loud and they send you to sleep.’

The researchers demonstrated the theory on fruit flies, removing the switch to create insomniac insects.

Dr Jeffrey Donlea, who co-authored the study in the journal Neuron, added: ‘There is a similar group of neurons in a region of the human brain.

‘These neurons are also electrically active during sleep and, like the flies’ cells, are the targets of general anaesthetics that puts us to sleep.

‘It’s therefore likely that a molecular mechanism similar to the one we have discovered in flies also operates in humans.’

Researchers are now trying to find out how to activate the sleep switch is so that it can be used to treat insomnia.

Professor Miesenböck said there are probably two mechanisms that regulate sleep patterns.

One is the body clock, the circadian rhythm which attunes humans and animals to the 24 hour cycle of day and night.

The other - the sleep ‘homeostat’ - keeps track of waking hours and acts as a switch to make the body nod off.

Professor Miesenböck said: ‘The sleep homeostat measures how long a fly has been awake and switches on a small group of specialized cells in the brain if necessary. It’s the electrical output of these nerve cells that puts the fly to sleep.’

The researchers demonstrated their theory by removing the homeostat neurons from the brains of a group of fruit flies.

They found the insects without the relevant neurons did not have regular sleep - they turned into insomniacs and were prone to nodding off at irregular hours.

They had severe learning and memory deficits, in the same way that sleep loss in humans leads to problems.

I am definitely a sufferer myself from insomnia. A bit strange however is that going through insomnia I somehow feel the most creative. Weird, I know.

Actually thats a common side-effect of the initial stages of sleep depravation, a better sense of well being and increased mental focus..
someone posted an article about sleep loss I read a few days ago;
the brain causes the release of more chemicals to compensate,
however its a short term reaction.

That's pretty neat to know. Certainly explains what I go through sometimes.

Insomnia? A hummer and a doubleshot of Jameson is all you need.

All leading, no doubt, to another expensive drug with side effects, just for something that can usually be cured through natural remedies/homeopathy and lifestyle changes.

Alcohol is the worst thing you can use to treat insomnia. The absolute worst.

My body doesn't like sleeping for more than 6 hours. And I can function just fine with 3-4 hrs of sleep. I don't know if that is technically insomnia, or something else.

It indicates that you have a strong constitution. Cherish it.

anytime you come in from natural sunlight, into a dark area with little natural or artificial light, your brain thinks it's nighttime, so it screws you all up. If you are inside, make sure it's brightly lit during the day. Also staring at a computer screen will keep you awake, if you turn down the brightness of your screen, it will make you sleepy. A bright computer screen suppresses your sleep response.

I've read the same thing regarding televitz: somehow it tricks the brain into thinking it's still daylight; in consequence, your body will be under the impression that it's not yet beddy-bye time. So, what's a man to do? Simple: kill your TV, and odds are you'll experience, not insomnia, but a deep, refreshing sleep.

I moided my 'vitz on New Year's Eve of 2014, at the stroke of midnight, to be exact. Still, on occasion, I won't be able to nod off within the usual 5-10 minutes of my head hitting the pillow. When that happens I simply get up, turn on the light, and read myself to sleep. Apparently the moving of the eyeballs while reading tires me out to some extent. Withing 20-30 minutes, at most, I'm able to go back to bed and snag 40 winks.

p.s. And don't try "reading" stroke-books such as Hustler or Penthouse in order to induce sleep; it simply won't work. You'll only wind up pitching a tent and engaging in an hour-long orgy with Madam Palm and her five daughters -- er, or so I've heard anyway.

Now that I think of it, ever since I have been playing online poker, I have suffered from serious disturbed sleep. So my insomnia is to do with the brightness of my computer screen fooling my brain that it's still daytime? Thanks for the tip.

Then again, Gerry, you could just turn on televitz and tune into one of those televangelists slinging the "Do you believe in Jeeesus?-Hallelujah!-Praise the Lord!-Send your money to me!" sales pitch; that'll no doubt knock you out faster than a fithful of sleeping pills chased by a fist of Jack Daniels... er, make that fistful of pills followed by a fifth of JD.

I swear! I ain't been drinking nuthin'!

Especially if it has bloody lemons in it.

I've suffered from chronic insomnia for my entire adult life. Been to physicians, sleep centers, tried every drug, nothing worked.

After literally decades, I finally accepted that I just don't sleep as long as most others. 4-5 hours a night is the norm.

I know of someone who would envy you those 4-5 hours per night, Donnie: a fiftyish female neighbor of mine who, if lucky, gets in 1-1/2 hours of shut-eye per night; one hour is her norm. She's had this problem since she was a teen, and been to a dozen or more doctors and sleep specialists over her lifetime, and taken every kind of pill you can imagine, and all to no effect whatsoever.

Jesus. I shouldn't bitch after reading that.

Honestly, as someone mentioned up-thread, it's an advantage in many ways. Back when I ran my shop I could be there working on orders hours before anyone else came in.

I have developed sleeping problems for the first time in my life in the last few months. Some nights I sleep decently. Some night 3 or 4 hours and other nights not AT ALL. And of course I have the most problems sleeping when I am doing something the next day that I want to get a lot of rest for. I had my thyroid tested and that was fine. That is often the problem if you have sudden trouble sleeping. I got a prescription for trazadone which works pretty good, most of the time but I do not want to get into the habit of taking them and they make me feel kind of weird. It does seem to have gotten better in the last week or so. I have only had trouble 2 nights out of 9 and I have not taken a trazadone for quite a few nights now.

I read about this not too long ago and chimped out a bit:

Take two of these and you'll wake up feeling refreshed after a full 48 hours of sleep.
