Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch's News Group News*papers has paid more than a million pounds to settle legal cases revealing illegal methods used by his reporters.

The most controversial scandal circles around the journalists' alleged involvement in illegal phone tapping of celebrities and famous politicians, amid calls urging Conservative Party head David Cameron to sack his key adviser who was then editor of one of the papers.

At least three cases were settled out of court after journalists allegedly hired private investigators who repeatedly broke the law to obtain information, The Guardian daily reported Thursday.

The Guardian said police found evidence suggesting that up to 3,000 mobile phones had been hacked by the private investigators.

The list includes the names of former deputy prime minister John Prescott, the publicist Max Clifford, and model Elle Macpherson.

One of the high-profile victims, the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) chief executive Gordon Taylor sued the group last year, saying they must have known about the tactics of Glenn Mulcaire, a private investigator employed by the News Group who was jailed in January 2007 over phone tapping.

News Group denies the charges.

Prescott told the BBC he had not been informed of the tapping but had wondered how 'highly private' information had leaked to the press.

Two years ago, Clive Goodman, the News of the World's royal reporter, was jailed after acknowledging his involvement in hacking into the phone messages of royal staff.

The Guardian claims it has evidence pointing to repeated cases of journalists resorting to illegal activity. This could lead to police inquiries and legal action by the victims.
