Rijeka Carnival Entertains 8,000 According to estimates, nearly 100,000 people attended the great international carnival in Rijeka.

RIJEKA, CROATIA – The traditional 26 th International Carnival procession took part in the centre o Rijeka on Sunday with over 8,000 participants in 97 masked groups, along with 74 chariots.

Guest groups from all Croatian regions passed through Rijeka: Dalmatia, Istria, Gorski kotar, as well as guests from abroad, for instance Italy, Montenegro, Macedonia and Serbia. According to estimates, nearly 100,000 people attended the great international carnival in Rijeka.

The Carnival procession is the pinnacle of the carnival period, not only in this area, but is also the biggest and most famous carnival in Croatia.

Costume themes at the Rijeka procession ranged from fantasy, like cartoon characters, popular culture to entirely original masks crafted by imaginative carnival goers, with months of effort put into them. There were satirical comments on current events, like recession or the especially relationship between Croatia and Slovenia at the moment. Mandatory bell-ringers were there, while 250 Halubaj bell-ringers closed the procession.

Carnival city

The Rijeka Carnival has been a full member of the Association of European Carnival Cities, and was included among the most significant in Europe.

As the procession ended, the Pust was set on fire at Rijeka Harbour, a puppet symbolising all the sins and negative events of the past year.

According to police information, there were no incidents throughout the day.

Ivana Hodak Murderer`s DNA Found In Bullet Shell? Even if the police had gone through their data base, they would not have found Slogar, because his DNA was not registered

ZAGREB, CROATIA – DNA of Mladen Slogar, suspected of the murder of law intern Ivana Hodak was found on a bullet shell left in the staircase of the building where she was killed last October. It is this shell that was submitted to the court as yet another piece of evidence, the Vecernji list daily writes.

Sweat in micsotraces
The trace left is sweat, experts determined, in microtraces left by Slogar`s fingers when he held the shell.
Still, the police would not comment on the findings, but they just say that a sufficient amount of evidence was gathered to reveal the motive of the murder, the perpetrator and the way it was carried out, according to the Vecernji list paper. The DNA profile which was left in the shell matches that of Slogar over 60 percent, the paper concludes.

The trace left is sweat, experts determined, in microtraces left by Slogar`s fingers when he held the shell.

The Croatian Interior Ministry database has some 20,000 DNA samples which are compared with crime scene evidence. Still, Mladen Slogar is not in that base, therefore the police would not have found him before, even is a more powerful piece of DNA evidence was found, the Vecernji list claims.

what a fix

Whole Of Croatia Is Against Me, President Too The jewels theory was not fabricated by Petrac, but someone sneakier, perhaps attorney Ante Nobilo, Zagorec said.

ZAGREB, CROATIA – As he stated his defence at the trial for the “jewels scandal” retired Croatian general Vladimir Zagorec reiterated that he did not abuse his power and could not manage the budget in any way. Also, he added, the state top decided on the purchase of arms, to be precise, the close government cabinet with late Croatian president Franjo Tudjman, as the chief commander.

- I could not even buy food, let alone weapons. I could have ordered everything, but the Croatian Finance Ministry paid for everything that went to the Croatian Defence Ministry (MORH), according to orders of Gojko Susak – Zagorec said, adding that his former secretary of the Defence Ministry Snjezana Siprak lied when she said she only had to call the PBZ and get funds.

“Nothing found in Sime Krasic`s revision”

As evidence that he had no authority over money, Zagorec mentioned the transcripts from the Brijuni islands concerning the Croatian military and police liberational “Storm” operation. According to him, president Tudjman asked him how much weapons he had and in what time, to which Zagorec replied that he had no weapons and that he needed to pay for it. The armament was purchased from abroad via a mediator. Tudjman ordered Valentic to pay. Furthermore, the retired general added, as he was leaving his duty at the defence ministry, state reviser Sima Krasic conducted the revision and found nothing.

I knew nobody would believe me that Zagorec`s jewels were in these boxes if I published only photos, so I managed to persuade my source into handing them over to me. I also persuaded that person to tell me where they got it from, but they said if they revealed that piece of information, they would lose their head, as Zagorec would soon find out who gave the boxes to that person.

Ivo Pukanic
- I`m just a little mouse and the entire country is against me, headed by [Croatian President Stjepan] Mesic – Zagorec said.

He denied all witnesses, especially former secretary Siprak.

- Do you honestly think that a secretary has so many authorisations next to the army – Zagorec said, adding that this was all a construction of someone who wants to make him look like Ali Baba and the forty thieves.

- Neither Snjezana Siprak nor Hrvoje Petrac thought of this jewels theory, but someone sneakier. Perhaps attorney Ante Nobilo, I don`t know. But, please, why didn`t Siprak say I took a bag full of money… Furthermore, who would give us jewels when we owed everyone money – Zagorec said.

Zagorec is charged with stealing a bag containing jewels from a safe in his office while he was leaving duty in 2000 as assistant to defence minister. The bag with jewels was left by German arms trader as a deposit for the money intended for the armament of Croatia. The trial began at the end of 2008, when the retired general was extradited to Croatia from Austria.

After the hearing on Monday, Zagorec`s attorney Zvonimir Hodak told reporters that his client was faced with another case of blackmail. According to him, he received a phone call from a man who claimed he had photos, i.e. evidence that Zagorec did not take the jewels, to be precise, that he has never seen them. The unidentified man wanted 3 million euros for this evidence, while Hodak notified the police about everything.

Britt Lapthorne Case Is Still Ongoing Ronald K. Noble said the Interpol was looking for two other people to discuss the death of the 23-year-old Australian.

ZAGREB, CROATIA – Interpol’s Secretary-General Ronald K. Noble said on Tuesday that the international police are continuing to cooperate with the Croatian police in shedding light on the death of Australian backpacker Britt Lapthorne.

The Interpol can help in this case because we have been receiving information and leads about possible new witnesses. This morning we informed out Croatian colleagues about our talk with one person who did not have any information, Noble said after a meeting with Croatian Interior Ministry and Police Directorate chiefs. He added that the Interpol were searching for two more people to talk to about the death of the 23-year-old Australian who was found dead in the sea in Dubrovnik last October.

The Secretary–General of Interpol, the largest police organisation that gathers police forces from 187 countries, said police director Vladimir Faber had asked him to additionally spur other Interpol members to step up any activities regarding the case.

‘The Australian documentary is fiction’

- I see fiction non-stop – Noble briefly commented Australia’s Channel 7 documentary that published composite images of two alleged kidnappers of young girls in Dubrovnik, about whom the Dubrovnik police are claiming are Dubrovnik’s police officers who have nothing to do with the Britt Lapthorne case.

Milk War Between Bosnia and Croatia The media in Bosnia are reporting the halt of all milk deliveries from Bosnia to Croatia. The Croatian ministry denies this.

The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of Republika Srpska, Radivoje Bratic, confirmed at a press conference that counter measures have been taken against a Croatian decision to control the quality of milk imported from Bosnia Herzegovina.

The president of the alliance of agricultural manufacturers of RS, Vladimir Usorac, warned that the measures taken by Croatia threaten the existence of more than 8,000 milk manufacturers in the Dubica and Bihac regions, reports pincominfo.

The problem occurred a few days ago when the Croatian Ministry of Agriculture, Fishing and Rural Development brought a decision that voided a declaration that certain Bosnian products can freely be imported into Croatia, and that there are no veterinary/health problems.

Deliveries are being stopped and samples are sent to the laboratory for testing, whilst the remaining delivery is out of circulation until the analysis is complete.

Croatian ministry reaction: milk imports from Bosnia have not been stopped

Today the Croatian Ministry of Agriculture, Fishing and Rural Development announced that the import of milk from Bosnia Herzegovina has not been stopped, and that there are no non-customs barriers for trade with Bosnia Herzegovina.

The Croatian ministry claims that they only had one quality control problem with the company “Mlijekoprodukt” and that standard procedure was in question. They said that the manufacturer has been contacted to change the noticed problems, and that the disputed shipment was not released to the market.

However “Mlijekoprodukt” complained to the Bosnian authorities, claiming that they were discriminated against.

The Minister of Agriculture for RS, Radivoje Bratic, said today that the only possible answer to the Croatian ministry was limiting the import of milk products from Croatia.

The Bosnian veterinary office ordered additional tests of Croatian products entering Bosnia Herzegovina. “Considering the unjustified halt of milk imports from Bosnia Herzegovina to Croatia, we implemented the same measures” said the head of the office Drago Nedic, saying that an import ban was not in question, but additional testing.

Large Numbers of Fish Die in Adriatic Fishermen have noticed a large number of pilchards dead, most probably due to the low sea temperatures

PULA, CROATIA – Fishermen on Thursday raised an alarm when they saw a large number of dead pilchards the northerly wind is carrying towards the coast, Barkun.hr reported.

They are mostly large pilchards and the extent of their dying and causes yet need to be established.

- The sea is filled with dead pilchards and the wind is carrying them towards the Savudrija Peninsula and Alberi – a fisherman, who notified the police and scientists, said.

According to suppositions by Alen Soldo from the Split University’s Sea Study Centre, the mass dying of fish was probably caused by low sea temperatures because these fish are extremely sensitive to low temperatures.

- Pilchards die off when the sea temperatures drop below ten degrees Celsius. This is not an unusual occurrence, although I cannot claim anything officially without carrying out analyses. I would venture to say that the dying of the pilchards has nothing to do with the humpback whale that was photographed in the Savudrija Bay recently – Soldo said, laughing.

BRADTKE STRATEGY USA Doing Everything to See Croatia Enter NATO U.S. Ambassador to Croatia, Robert Bradtke, presented America’s new strategy focusing on Croatia and the region.

ZAGREB, CROATIA – The USA is doing and will be doing everything in its power to see Croatia become a full member of NATO at the NATO summit in early April, the U.S. Ambassador to Croatia, Robert Bradtke, said.

At a business lunch at the American Chamber of Commerce in Zagreb, Bradtke gave a speech before some 150 people from Croatia’s political and business scenes about the subject “The Obama Administration – USA’s New Strategy” with a focus on Croatia and the region.

- The United States is doing and will do everything it can to ensure that all NATO members complete the process of ratification of the accession protocols so that Croatia can be a full member of NATO when the leaders of the Alliance meet at the 60th anniversary summit on April 3 – he said.

Washington wants cooperation in solving issues in the region, but also global issues

- All of us, in NATO and the EU, need to recognise that if bilateral disagreements are allowed to block the path of the countries of South-eastern Europe towards Euro-Atlantic institutions, we risk seriously weakening the forces of reform and reconciliation in this region – the ambassador stressed.

The strong American-Croatian relations will also be boosted by the important experience and personal commitment towards this region which Vice-President Joe Biden and State Secretary Hillary Clinton have brought to Obama’s Administration, he continued.

Washington wants to cooperate with Zagreb also in solving open issues in the region, but also global problems, Bradtke said.

Obama will not visit Croatia yet

The USA also wants to fortify economic ties with Croatia and it is working intensively on putting Croatia on the list of countries that do not need visas to visit the United States. In order to achieve this, Croatia must introduce biometric passports, he said.

In his speech, Ambassador Bradtke accentuated the priorities of the Obama Administration, primarily the economic recovery of America. Regarding foreign policy, the new American president cited four goals: Iraq, Afghanistan, the Middle East and climatic changes.

Answering reporters’ questions after his speech, Bradtke said that the ratification protocols for the entry of Croatia and Albania into NATO must be submitted before the beginning of the upcoming NATO summit. He also said that he did not believe President Barack Obama would visit Croatia after the summit, as had been announced by Croatian media.

Croatia PM Searches for Money in Europe and World Not only are we not giving up, but we will expand infrastructure projects in a way of offering them in concession, PM Sanader said.

ZAGREB, CROATIA – By the middle of next week, budgetary users must submit to a working group for budgetary amendments their suggestions on where and how they can save on expenses, Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said after Friday’s meeting with all ministers, state secretaries and administration managers, that is, users of the government budget.

Budgetary users were not told how much they have to save, but their suggestions will be

Once budgetary users suggest ways of saving, the budgetary amendment working group will discuss with social partners about other segments of amendments.subsequently verified and if they are not in line with expectations, “they will have to re-take the test”, the prime minister said.

- The first thing to be done in amending the budget is to see how much budgetary users can save, because in times of the global and European crisis and the crisis in Croatia, the government and other budgetary users cannot behave as if they are expecting others to do something about it – he added.

Government trying to secure funds for the Croatian Bank for Reconstruction and Development

Sanader also said that he has been contacting various financial sources in Europe and the world for several days now, along with Finance Minister Ivan Suker, in order to secure funds for the Croatian Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

- We must complete this job which we discussed today in order for us to be in a situation that the country can get international loans and to free economical potentials for Croatian banks – Sanader said.

Minister Suker announced that he would next week meet with economic analysts about their projections on the GDP in 2009, on the basis of which the earning part of the budget will be drawn up.

Infrastructure projects will expand

Prime Minister Sanader reiterated that the government will not give up on infrastructure projects because they can help the economic crisis to be overcome.

- Not only are we not giving up, but we will expand infrastructure projects in a way of offering them in concession or public-private partnership to finance them and that is that one pillar that can keep a big part of the industry standing – Sanader said.
