Another Potential ‘Knockout’ Attack In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A man was attacked out of nowhere, and Philadelphia police believe it’s the latest assault tied to the so-called “Knockout Game.”

A witness says the attackers videotaped the whole thing.

While that video has yet to surface, that witness is speaking out and talking only to Eyewitness News.

“It was really, really sad to see how hurt he was,” she says.

The eyewitness asked to remain anonymous, because she says she is now living in fear, knowing the suspects are still out there.

“Sad to live like that. I grew up here my whole life and I can’t wait to leave,” she says.

What she saw, according to police, was a 63-year-old man fall victim to what investigators from Northeast Detectives are calling a case of the “Knockout Game,” where criminals punch someone so hard they lose consciousness.

“It was just one punch and the old man, his body just fell, dead weight, just fell to the ground, then they probably kicked him two, three times. His left side of the face was swollen. His whole left cheek was out to here. It’s sad,” the witness says.

It happened Sunday afternoon in the 4400 block of Wellington Street, and as seen in YouTube videos from other cities, we are told the suspects in this case also taped the entire incident.

“Two went behind him and two stayed in the street and videotaped it with their phone, their camera phones.”

The four suspects then ran away when the witness screamed for help. Mayfair Town Watch is now alerting its community on Facebook of what some call not just cowardly, but a disturbing act that appears to have been premeditated.

“As they walked by my car, I heard the one say, ‘That’s an old man,’ and the other one said, ‘So what?’ So they were planning on it, plotting on it, they knew what they were doing.”

According to the eyewitness, the suspects did not try to rob the victim, leading police to believe this random attack was a case of the “Knockout Game.”

Descriptions of the suspects remain vague. The eyewitness says it all happened so fast, and she only recalls seeing four black males in their late teens to early 20s.

Police say they are investigating.

The victim’s family told Eyewitness News that the 63-year-old has been hospitalized with head and chest injuries since Sunday. He should be released some time on Tuesday.

Police Need Public's Help Identifying Four Robbery Suspects

PHILADELPHIA - They sucker-punched and robbed a 23-year-old male in Old City, and police need your help identifying the suspects.

The robbery happened on November 17th at around 2:45 a.m. on the 700 block of Sansom Street. According to Police, there are four suspects:

•Suspect #1: Black male, 20 years-of-age, thin build, wearing a gray colored hooded sweatshirt, dark colored jeans and armed with a handgun.
•Suspect #2: Black male, 20 years-of-age, thin build, wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt with a logo on the front and dark colored jeans.
•Suspect #3: Black male, 20 years-of-age, thin build, wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt and dark colored jeans.
•Suspect #4: Black male, 20 years-of-age, thin build, wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt and dark colored jeans.

Surveillance video shows the victim and two other friends walking into the Katz Imports jewelry store. The suspects follow them and camp outside, surveillance shows. Then according to the footage, the victim was walking back into while on his cell phone when one of the suspects punches him in the jaw from the side. After the victim falls to the ground, the three other suspects jump in and try to rob him, investigators say. The victim's two friends try their best to pull the victim into the store. Police confirm that the suspects took the victim's iPhone and fled west in a silver or gray Pontiac Grand Prix.

Over the past year or so there have been reports of Knockout Game attacks in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and as far away as London, where video captured one punch flattening a 16-year-old girl. And last week, perhaps in homage to the fact that the game is gaining national attention, there were six such attacks in New Haven, CT over a two-day period. An attack in San Diego last week may herald the Knockout Game’s arrival on the West Coast.

But it seems this only became a national story when Jewish leaders spoke up and demanded action after a string of attacks in Brooklyn that left multiple Jewish victims. In some cases the victims were Hasidim and thus obviously Jewish, but in others, such as the attack on a 78-year-old woman, it strains belief to think that roving packs of dumb-as-a-stump black teens looking for blood would be able to tell a 78-year-old Jewess from a 78-year-old shiksa. The attackers may not have been able to distinguish one light-skinned person from another. We may all look the same to them—pale, easy targets.

Ann Coulter On Knockout Game Denial: “Don’t Worry, Black America. White Liberals Have Your Back”

On a break from pretending to believe they live in a country bristling with violent white racists, the Non-Fox Media have been trying to debunk stories about the “Knockout Game,” in which young black males approach random strangers and try to knock them out with one punch.

The left’s leading line of defense against the Knockout Game is to argue that young black males have always been violent, so, hey, this is nothing new.

You’re welcome, black America!

In Slate, Emma Roller wearily recounted other episodes of black-on-white violence in order to announce: “The ‘Knockout Game’ is a myth.”

Reminiscing about the flash mobs that shook many parts of the country a few years ago, Roller wrote: “I remember the summer of 2011, a story about a crowd of (black) teenagers at the Wisconsin State Fair randomly attacking fairgoers went viral as a sign of a burgeoning race war.”

So you see, stupid right-wingers, young black males have always been violent, so what’s the big deal about the Knockout Game? Your honor, my client’s not a killer; he’s a serial killer.

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes reached for a different example of monstrous black-on-white violence in order to dispute that the Knockout Game is anything new.

Looking like a translator for the deaf with all the air quotes he had to make for “supposed” “trend” and “Knockout Game,” Hayes compared it to what he called the fake trend of “wilding” after a mob of black youths violently attacked and raped a white woman jogging in New York’s Central Park in 1989. According to Hayes, “there never was such a thing” as wilding.

Whether the boys who were convicted of the crime did it or, as liberals now claim, a man already sentenced to life in prison did it, the Central Park jogger was brutally raped and nearly murdered by either one or several young black men. (They all did it—see Chapter 13 of my book “Demonic.”)

The following year, 1990, blacks committed 57 percent of all the violent crime against whites, while whites committed only 2 percent of the violent crime against blacks, according to the Department of Justice’s annual Victimization Report. Thanks for the memories, Chris! Oh, and contrary to Hayes’ proclamation, black men raping white women is something of a “trend”—at least according to FBI crime statistics. At least since 1997 (I got bored and stopped looking any farther back) blacks have raped several thousand white women every year, while white-on-black rapes have numbered between “0.0″ and “Sample based on 10 or fewer.” (See Chapter 11 of “Mugged.”)

In a particularly incomprehensible defense of black America in Mediaite, Tommy Christopher denounced the “sketchy” news reports of “the so-called ‘Knockout Game’” by citing the video of a group of black teenagers walking past teacher Jim Addlespurger, when one of the black teens steps from the group and knocks the teacher out cold, and then they all laugh about the assault as they continue walking.

But Christopher helpfully notes that a cop said this “was just a random act of violence.” So don’t worry about the Knockout Game, white people—this is mostly just ordinary, everyday black-on-white violence.

Flash mobs, wilding, day-to-day black violence—talk about damning with faint praise!

Liberals have to work so hard to avoid noticing the astronomical crime rate among young black males that their brains freeze.

Roller attributed public interest in a story about mobs of young black males attacking families at a state fair to white people’s need to validate their “fear” that black people are dangerous. (Milwaukeeans hardly even notice when mobs of whites surround their families at a state fair, punch them, kick them and smash their cars, while shouting racial slurs.)

But Roller implied that blacks engaging in violence is wildly unusual: “When a few YouTube videos are able to convince terrified white folks that young black people are dangerous, they may as well assume that all cats can play the keyboard.”

Is a disproportionate amount of keyboard playing in the country being done by cats?

According to the FBI, between 1976 and 2005, blacks, who are about 12 percent of the population, committed 53 percent of all felony murders and 56 percent of non-felony murders. The Centers for Disease Control recently reported that young black men are 14 times more likely to commit murder than young white men.

White liberals know this. Blacks certainly know it. Despite the hoo-ha over George Zimmerman shooting Trayvon Martin, most black people’s experience is not that white vigilantes are shooting them. For every one of those, there are 1,000 black teens killing other black people.

But if liberals took the first step toward sanity and admitted that young black men commit an awful lot of violent crime, they might have to ask why that is.

That’s a dangerous question for people who refuse to acknowledge the devastation of fatherless boys caused by liberal welfare policies. (See Chapter 6 of “Never Trust a Liberal Over 3″ to see how the British welfare system has created the same social disaster among hordes of white people.)

Unable to consider the obvious explanation—single-motherhood—liberals are left with nothing but genetic determinism.

So liberals defend young black males from the charge of playing a Knockout Game by telling us young black men are always violent.

Don’t worry, black America. White liberals have your back.

Police respond to knockout threat

Yale students and New Haven residents are experiencing the arrival of a new crime pattern that has gained national attention in recent weeks — the “knockout game.”

The game refers to attacks on pedestrians by groups of young adults. The assaulters approach their victims on public streets, hit them and run away. After speaking to the New Haven Police Department, Yale Police Chief Ronnell Higgins notified the campus community about the violent new trend in an email on Nov. 21. There were seven reported cases of street violence in New Haven this November that could be linked to the “knockout game.”

The most recent incident occurred close to Gateway Community College, on the Church Street overpass, according to Higgins’ email alert. New Haven Police are still uncertain as to whether the reported acts of violence were incidents of “knockout.”

According to Public Information Officer Anna Mariotti, the attacks have subsided since late November.

“The YPD is working collaboratively with the New Haven Police Department and Yale Security to prevent these assaults and to identify those responsible,” said Yale Public Relations Manager Amy Athey McDonald.

Higgins reiterated that students should be aware of their surroundings and avoid isolated areas, especially after dark.

New Haven residents said that exercising caution has always been a necessity in New Haven.

“We live in an urban area, and we have to be careful,” said jew Michael Kaplan ’86, a New Haven resident and the parent of a current Yale student. “This is one more thing to be careful about.”

Zoe Dobuler ’17 expressed concern that the “knockout game” presents an additional danger. She had not heard of the “knockout game” before Higgins’ email and said it is scary that such attacks have occurred so close to campus. Dobuler said she remains careful when walking around campus at night but has not made any changes to her habits since receiving Higgins’ email.

Kaplan and Dobuler both expressed confusion over the assaulters’ motives. While there is a clear reason for “apple-picking,” the crime trend where people steal iPhones and iPods, it is less clear what a person would gain from punching a stranger in the face, Kaplan said.

Kaplan also expressed doubt about whether the “knockout game” will become a serious issue in New Haven.

“I’m not sure whether the fear is coming from the students or the national media coverage,” Kaplan said.

Sergeant Al Vazquez of the NHPD Detective Bureau shared residents’ concerns about media sensationalism. The best way to prevent further “knockout” attacks is to educate New Haven residents as well as the media, Vazquez said. He explained that the media helps perpetuate the trend by continually covering it.

The Yale Police has not yet determined whether the “knockout game” will be as prevalent of a threat as “apple-picking” was last year, McDonald said, explaining that the email was meant to be precautionary. She added that the YPD’s goal was to encourage the community to take reasonable precautions.

The Detective Bureau of the NHPD is preparing to arrest one individual in response to the Church Street “knockout” incident that occurred on Nov. 17.

The "Knockout Game" -- a supposed trend in which kids dare one another to sucker punch an unsuspecting victim -- is purely a media fabrication.

That's what James Addlespurger tells HuffPost Live. The Pittsburgh teacher was seen on video in October 2012 getting hit in the back of the head so hard that he instantly blacked out and fell face-first into the pavement.

Addlespurger says the security footage has been used to identify the supposed "trend" -- and it's played on TV news shows countless times -- but he doesn't call the attack a "Knockout Game." He simply calls it "assault."

"I feel like I'm exploited," Addlespurger told HuffPost Live. "People need a label. If they're selling toothpaste or CDs, or news stories, they need a label ... To me it's an assault, plain and simple."

The supposed trend, he says, evolved from his and a few other videos on the Internet showing men recording themselves knocking people out. But just because you can find it on YouTube doesn't mean it's a violent trend.

"Butt slapping," for instance, is not a violent sex crime trend, but news stations have already begun to imply that it is, using only one person as a source.

Rabbi Gary Moskowitz, a former police detective, is training locals self-defense in midst of wave of random assaults.

The series of shocking assaults on Jewish and other passersby in the New York area has motivated a rabbi trained in martial arts to empower locals to protect themselves.

Rabbi Gary Moskkowitz, a former police officer and a seventh-degree black belt, is training Jews in Brooklyn to protect themselves against so-called “knockout” attackers who have sowed fear among those walking the streets.

The object of the “knockout” game is to level an unsuspecting pedestrian with one punch, leaving the person unconscious. Thus far, eight of the knockout victims have been Jews in Brooklyn.

"If Jewish kids started fighting back, they wouldn’t get picked on so much,” the 56-year-old Moskowitz told The New York Post.

The rabbi, who runs a karate dojo in nearby Queens, said that a few simple self-defense tactics could help potential victims ward off attackers.

"If you swing at me, you're going to get hit back," Moskowitz said.
