Thumbs up High Court action over Tara ruins

A new High Court action that aims to protect 2,000 year-old ruins discovered at Lismullin near the Hill of Tara is to be taken today.

The semicircular enclosure at Lismullen, about four miles south of Navan on the existing N3, lies across the northbound lane of the controversial new M3 motorway. It is 80 metres in diameter, dates from between 380BC and 520BC, and may be some kind of ceremonial site.

The new action is being taken by Gordon Lucas, a resident of Limerick, who is seeking to enforce EU environmental impact assessment directives and the European Convention on Human Rights.

He is seeking an injunction, and a declaration that the National Monuments Act 2004 is in breach of EU law.

Default Position Paper - 15th February 2008: Digging Machinery operating at Lismullen

by Tara Foundation
Saturday Feb 16th, 2008 4:43 PM

Digging machinery has appeared on the 6th February 2008 at the Lismullin National Monument near the Hill of Tara in Ireland as attempts are begun to fill in the Henge in advance of Irish and European Court decisions. (http://www.indymedia.ie/article/86111)
As of February 15th 2008, the situation appears to be escalating at
Lismullen. Protestors at Lismullen state that Diggers are trying to
cross the protected area of the National Monument. More machinery is
arriving and protesters are attempting a blockade. The protesters say
that SIAC / Ferrovial employees are attempting to bury the Lismullen
National Monument with earth, in the face of the High Court / EU Court
of Justice cases concerning Lismullen:

Protesters at Lismullen are saying that SIAC / Ferrovial employees are attempting to bury the Lismullen National Monument with earth, in the face of the High Court / EU Court of Justice cases:

The Tara Foundation are very concerned that moves could be being made
to demolish the Lismullen Henge in advance of High Court Proceedings
initiated on the 5th February 2008 aginst the Irish Government over
its failure to comply with EU law and an imminent EU Court of Justice
decision in relation to the
Lismullen Henge. Attempts to contact the relevant State bodies, the
NRA, the Departments of the Environment and Transport, Meath County
Council, and the contractor, SIAC, have so far met with no response.

The Rath Lugh Protest Camp needs support: http://www.tarapixie.net

The Rath Lugh Direct Action Camp is situated two and a half kilometres from the Hill of Tara, on the Front Line of the proposed M3 between Lismullen and Baronstown.

Rath Lugh is the outer base camp for the Hill of Tara, enabling activists to keep a permanent vigil on the movement of vehicles and personnel working on various construction sites throughout the valley. Activists also maintain a constant presence on the Rath Lugh National Monument, which is currently under a temporary preservation order. The aim is to see this significant monument permanently preserved in-line with the rest of the Tara Complex.

“We need people urgently to halt the Valley's destruction. Everyone has a skill or talent they can lend to this protest. Bring wellies, raingear, sleeping bags, torch, lighter, plenty of warm clothing, and good spirits. The protest is only going to get stronger, we will continue to oppose the motorway until it is moved, so come to Rath Lugh as quickly as you can. WE NEED YOU ALL NOW BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. Tara is calling, don't ignore the call.”

(From the Statement from Tara activists at the Rath Lugh Camp):
Rath Lugh Camp Number: +353 86 1537 146

SDLP Tables Save Tara Motion in Northern Ireland Assembly’

A Private Members Motion, opposing the “route of the M3 Motorway in the Boyne Valley, which will despoil the historic site of Tara” has been tabled in the Northern Ireland Assembly by the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP)

Carmel Hanna, MLA, (SDLP-South Belfast), tabled the motion last week, and is awaiting a date for oral debate.

The full text of the Private Members Motion reads as follows:

“That this Assembly cherishes historical heritage; expresses its opposition to the proposed route of the M3 Motorway in the Boyne Valley, which will despoil the historic site of Tara and other national monuments in this area; and calls on the Minister of the Environment to liaise with her Ministerial counterpart in the Republic of Ireland, with a view to revisiting plans and presenting an alternative route, which will win acceptance among all interested parties.”

Mrs Hanna has been very vocal in her opposition to the M3 route. At a recent pro-Tara event at Giant’s Ring, Belfast, she said:

“Quite appallingly, Tara, Ireland's premier national monument is now under dire threat from bisection by a proposed four lane, sixty kilometre motorway, a privatised toll road which would be routed between the Hill of Tara and the Hill of Skryne in the Royal County, Meath.

“The proposed motorway would pass through the Tara complex which last June was placed on the list of "100 Most Endangered Sites" by the World Monuments Fund.

“What we have here is a classic conflict between the consequences of modern prosperity and the obligation we have to act as trustees of our Irish heritage for the generations which will come after us.

“Of course, we all rejoice in the economic transformation of the Irish Republic in the last few decades. It's a sobering thought that half of the people born on this island since the Famine have had to leave it. Inevitably, prosperity has come at a price. Particularly in the greater Dublin area, people are having to commute long distances which were previously unthinkable, and towns like Navan, Kells, Drogheda and Dundalk have increasingly been drawn into Dublin's commuter belt.

"Tara is only 30 miles from the centre of Dublin and it has been said that it would cut 20 minutes off commuting time. The M3 motorway is projected to run between Clonee and Kells and will supplement the two-lane N3. Inevitably the M3 will also bring increased traffic, mounting air pollution, urban sprawl and even more development. But at what a price!?

“As we all know, Ireland, north or south, has a poorly-developed public transport infrastructure.

“I feel in my heart and my soul that there has to be a better solution than the M3 motorway. The M3 controversy has highlighted our over-reliance on the car and there have to be better options, whether by re-opening the direct railway line from Navan to Dublin, closed in the sixties, or upgrading the existing freight-only line from Navan via Drogheda to Dublin, or upgrading existing roads, or putting in bus lane networks.

“If, at the end of the day, a motorway has to be built, as a very last and least desirable option it can be re-routed further to the west, well away from Tara.

TaraWatch spokesperson Vincent Salafia said:

“We welcome this support from our northern friends, and we hope for a robust alliance in favour of the motion.

“While saving Tara may be seen as an extraterritorial matter for some in the Northern Ireland Assembly, and indeed Dail Eireann, we are asserting that this in fact an all-island issue, particularly since the M3 will end up crossing the border.

“We hope Environment Ministers from North and South can explore a solution to the current crisis, particularly as a new High Court action is expected to be heard shortly.

“Tara belongs to all Irish people, everywhere, and indeed has a long history of occupation by the Ulstermen.”

Default Idiot claims Tara was safer under UK rule

Quote:
Seamus Heaney claimed this weekend that the ancient Hill of Tara was safer under British rule than the present Irish government, describing the construction of a motorway near the site as a betrayal of 'Ireland's dead generations'.

The Nobel laureate's attack on the construction of the €800m road linking Dublin with Counties Meath and Cavan is compounded by sharp criticism from the World Monuments Fund. The New York-based organisation has compared the building of the motorway through the Tara Skreen valley to the Taliban's deliberate destruction of the giant Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan in 2001.

Default Protestor remains chained in M3 underground tunnel

[Published: Thursday 13, March 2008 - 17:26]

A woman remains chained in an underground tunnel at the site of the M3 in County Meath this evening.

She was protesting at the construction site on the motorway near the Hill of Tara earlier today when she fled into the tunnel after a fellow-protestor was arrested.

Meanwhile, the group demonstrating against the motorway lost in their bid to get the High Court to grant an injunction to halt construction at the site earlier today.

M3 protester 'has enough food to stay in tunnel for a month'

Tara protester Lisa Feeney has enough food to sustain her for one month

By Shane Hickey
Saturday March 15 2008

THE stand-off between construction workers, gardai and protesters at the site of the M3 motorway continued yesterday with a young woman remaining holed up in a tunnel at the site.

Lisa 'Squeak' Feeney (26) stayed in the 10-metre tunnel constructed at the Rath Lugh national monument, some 2.3 miles north-east of the Hill of Tara, in the second day of her protest over work on the site.

The Kerry woman, who has lived in Dublin for the past eight years, started her protest at about 7am on Thursday, when demonstrators were served with a notice to move from the area to allow for construction works.

A group of protesters demanded that the route of the M3 be moved away from the national monument at Rath Lugh, claiming the current route contravened the preservation order on the site.

Yesterday, a Department of the Environment inspector said the order was not being contravened after a site visit.

A group of protesters called Rath Lugh Direct Action have set up camp at the site and continued their protest there yesterday.

"She is quite happy, very calm and relaxed, not too claustrophobic or fearing the cabin fever just yet," said Ms Feeney's boyfriend Paddy O'Kearney, who is staying in a tent at the entrance to the tunnel -- which is surrounded by gardai and security officers.

Supplies

Ms Feeney's supporters claim that she has enough dried food to last a month. She is communicating with the surface through a two-way walkie-walkie system.

A safety officer saw her yesterday, and she was also passed additional supplies by colleagues.

It is understood that a tunnelling expert has been engaged by the building contractors, and will travel to the site tomorrow from the UK.

There were violent scenes on Thursday afternoon after workers hammered posts into the ground near the tunnel.

The protesters argue that the action is being carried out to illustrate how unstable the area around the monument is, and the threat of damage to it by the movement of construction equipment. Five demonstrators, who had secured themselves to rigid objects at the scene, removed themselves after a tent was constructed around the entrance to the tunnel.

A spokesman for the National Roads Authority (NRA) said Ms Feeney's action was not having any immediate impact on the construction of the M3, describing it as a "health and safety issue" which was in the hands of the gardai.

"We are still hoping that this young lady will be safe and will exit the tunnel safely and the issue will be resolved through discussions," the spokesman added.

"This is a very serious matter and she could cause herself a lot of harm and we are concerned about her."

A High Court bid to halt work on the motorway failed on Thursday. It claimed there was a risk of damage to the national monument but this was dismissed by Ms Justice Mary Laffoy.

The M3 protestor who had been in a tunnel at the Rath Lugh national monument has emerged.

Lisa Feeney left the tunnel this evening after several hours of negotiations with gardaí from Navan, and talking to her father and fellow protestors.

Ms Feeney spent several days inside the 10 metre deep tunnel in an attempt to prevent construction work of the M3 motorway at Rath Lugh in the Tara-Skyrne valley, Co Meath.

She is unharmed and is said to be in good spirits.

Groups opposing the route of the M3 motorway through the Tara-Skryne valley say their protests will continue.

M3 protesters claim deal with NRA

Sunday, 16 March 2008 23:21

The woman who had been in a tunnel next to the construction of the M3 motorway in Co Meath, has ended her protest after several days underground.

Protestors claim Lisa Feeney agreed to leave after striking a deal with the National Roads Authority to suspend work for a month at Rath Lugh.

Her protest was aimed at preventing construction work on the M3 motorway, near the Rath Lugh national monument, in the Tara/Skryne valley.

The NRA confirmed it was involved in negotiations yesterday which led to Lisa Feeney leaving the tunnel but says it had not planned to work there over the next four weeks.

Groups opposing the route of the M3 Motorway through the Tara-Skryne Valley, Co Meath, say their protests will continue, despite the ending of the tunnel-based campaign.

Default Bono only cares about Africa. Tara Hill means nothing to him.

HOME TRUTHS: Stuart Townsend blasts Bono over star’s failure to back Save Tara campaign

Monday March 24 2008

RELATIONS between two of Ireland’s most famous men are set to turn frosty after actor Stuart Townsend lashed out at U2 frontman Bono.

The Irish actor slammed the world-famous singer for failing to step up and help in the fight to save the Hill of Tara.

And to add insult to injury he went on to claim that the humanitarian was more interested in helping those overseas that in getting involved in campaigns in his native Ireland.

“I don’t know why Bono hasn’t gotten involved so far. Maybe it’s because his focus is on Africa and heritage isn’t his thing,” the actor claimed.

Townsend made the remarks while enjoying a romantic weekend in Paris with his partner Charlize Theron (32).

The actor himself has long been involved in the campaign to save the ancient spot and halt construction of the controversial motorway.

FIGHT

And he went on to call on Bono to end his silence on the issue and join the fight.

“Things are really getting desperate now so we really need Bono to say something.

“He’s Bono for God’s sake, he’s Irish and he lives in Ireland.

We really need someone of that magnitude to help,” he added. Townsend said that the campaign was getting the backing of poet Seamus Heaney. The poet and Nobel laureate criticised the Taoiseach and the M3 project saying: “Bertie thinks his legacy is the Celtic Tiger and economic – but his real legacy will be letting them put a motorway through Tara.”

Last year Townsend and Theron visited the site and organised photo opportunities and interviews.

The actor revealed that it was causes like Tara that kept the couple so much in love.

“I suppose part of what attracts Charlize to me is that I’m a space cadet who likes going to places like Tara. She digs it,” he said.

Townsend went on to praise student radical Lisa ‘Squeak’ Feeney, describing the campaigner as a ‘hero’ after she encased herself into a seven metre underground pit for three days in a bid to halt further work near the ancient site.

“It’s a sad reflection on the Irish Government that a young woman has to put her life on the line to protect what our Government should be protecting.

“I think people should join her and the other protestors and get involved . . . none of us have done enough to save Tara,” he added.
