DEATH THREATS ‘This Is the Last Tournament You Organised’ Zagreb Indoors director Branko Horvat received death threats due to surprising results of the tennis players ZAGREB, CROATIA - The director of the Zagreb Indoors tennis tournament has received death threats. It has been confirmed that the threats were made due to surprising results of tennis players at the tournament and Horvat was told via an e-mail message that he would not live to see the next tournament. - This is the last tournament you organised – said the e-mail whose contents Horvat revealed to reporters. - This is incredible what is happening to me. It is all related to the surprising results at the Indoors. The director of the tournament simply cannot influence the results, it is in anybody’s interest that the main stars stay in the tournament for as long as possible. I am very scared over this. This is not normal – the evidently distressed Horvat said. The threat arrived after a number of surprising victories by tennis players who are low on the ATP list.

CRISIS CENTRE ESTABLISHED Airplane Crashes on Croatia’s Mount Velebit The Cesssna crashed into Mount velebit's highest point. Searc and rescue teams are on their way to the scene.
ZADAR, CROATIA – A Cessna 303 carrying three passengers from Slovakia crashed at the very summit of Mount Velebit. According to unofficial information the plane carried three Croatian pilots. Immediately after the report of the accident, the search and rescue service was informed to check out this very rough terrain in which there is currently a thick fog and the snow can be up to three metres deep. According to the first information, the aircraft lifted off from Bratislava with its destination being the Croatian town of Zadar. The last communication with the crew was at 15:40 hours when the plane was above the highest point of Mount Velebit which is located at an altitude of 1,757 metres (Interactive map of the Vagan summit - geonames). Zadar police spokeswoman Sonja Simurina told us a crisis centre has been established at the police which immediately began an investigation to determine what happened to the plane and passengers. - The flight control at the Zeminuk airport reported that it had lost communication with the aircraft that had a pilot and two passengers at around 15:40 hours. All I can tell you for now is that the search has begun – Simurina told us. The head of the Search and Rescue service, Vinko Prizmic, said in the evening that due to poor visibility, the search from the air yielded no results. But members of the mountain Search and Rescue Service from Zadar are searching for the missing plane from the north side. Croatia have big mountains and one off touhgest is Velebit, many plains crush there Velebit means on oldCroatian - the great, the huge

Its great to be an American, we can look past this sort of thing. I have good nationalist friends among Serbs and Croats. When I tell them that their eyes always get big like saucers. Here s a different question. Have the nationalists of today in Serbia and Croatia ever made nice and cooperated against the common enemies? |

PLANE CRASHED No Signals from Plane, Search Not Going Well The weather conditions are so bad that the search for the missing Cessna is not going well, nothing can be seen at six to ten metres
GOSPIC, CROATIA – Head of the Croatian Mountain Search and Rescue Service, Vinko Prizmic, denied some media reports that they have managed to locate mobile phone signals of all four passengers in the Cessna that apparently crashed on Mount Velebit. - The mobile phones are non-functional. When they were functional, we did a reconstruction and entered it into an analysis – Prizmic said. This could help locate the pilots, but according to Prizmic, the search for survivors is not going well due to the rough conditions of the terrain. - The conditions are so bad that the search is not going well. Visibility is only six to ten metres – Prizmic said. In the meantime, Lika-Senj County police said police patrols collected information from locals from the north-east side of the mountain, which directs the search towards the area of the Vagan summit which has not been completely cleared of mines. 43 police are still searching the area on the north-east side of Mount Velebit. Due to poor weather conditions, the police helicopter still has not taken off to help with the search

Bozic: We Will Search for Days if Needed Bozic told us that his team is ready and that they will soon depart for Velebit. Despite the bad weather he believes in a positive outcome
The alpinist Stipe Bozic and his team joined in the search for the missing Cessna, which disappeared on Thursday at around 3:45pm over Velebit mountain. In a telephone conversation with us, he said that they are ready and that they are heading towards Velebit. Despite the poor weather, he believes that the result will be positive. “The teams are ready and we are leaving. We will start from the south side of Velebit and if needed we will search for days, until we find them. It is cloudy up there, the visibility is poor and there is a strong wind, but I believe that we will find them” said Stipe Bozic. In August 2008, Stipe Bozic participated in saving a Polish alpinist on Omis’ Dinara mountain. That took place one month after Bozic’s son and daughter-in-law died in a car crash in Drvenik. Josko Bozic was the head of the Split station of the Croatian mountain rescue service. The search headquarters, founded in Zadar’s police headquarters, checks all of the information that can be gathered from witnesses, however, it is mainly the impressions from certain individuals. Remember, the Cessna aircraft was carrying four pilots, and was flying from Zagreb towards Zadar, and disappeared on Thursday afternoon on Velebit. Also participating in the search are 35 members of the Croatian mountain rescue service and members of the special police. Even though the weather conditions do not allow searching from the air, and landmines are hampering the searching of certain terrain, helicopters are prepared to fly and could take off if the weather allows it.

Dale Lapthorne: Croatian Police Ignore Evidence Britt’s father considers that Croatian police ignored other kidnapping attempts, and says they do not want to know what happened to Britt.
Australia’s “Channel 7” broadcast a documentary on Sunday about the Britt Lapthorne case, which they linked to three attempted kidnappings in Dubrovnik. The young Australian Amber said that only five days after Britt disappeared, a group of men tried to kidnap her, and Kate, who was attaked a year earlier recognized the photo robot. Dale Lapthorne, the father of Britt Lapthorne, said that the Croatian police are ignoring all of the evidence. Britt’s father Dale said for Javno that the documentary is good and that there is a lot of new information. However, he said that they were frustrated due to the procedures by Dubrovnik’s police who are ignoring the other crimes and evidence of the whole case. He added that the Croatian police want to show Britt’s death as an unfortunate accident. Croatian police should protect tourists Dale mentioned that Dubrovnik’s police keep on mentioning the autopsy results. He said that the autopsy did not show that Britt was not killed, and that nothing was proven. The autopsy did not manage to reveal the cause of death. Dale said that he cannot understand how the police can keep giving such statements. Dale concluded that the Croatian police do not want to know exactly what happened to Britt. He said that Dubrovnik’s police should firstly protect the tourists. Dale said that normal young people are now afraid to visit Dubrovnik after all of this, and that the police can fix that only if they protect tourists. Britt’s father voiced his gratitude for the support from the Croatian and Australian media. We tried to contact the Dubrovnik police, but nobody answered the telephone all morning. However, at around 1pm an announcement arrived from Zlatko Sokolar, the head of the Dubrovnik-Neretva police department. They repeated that the case of Britt Lapthorne’s death is still open, and that cooperation with Interpol is continuing, as well as the bilateral cooperation of the police with certain countries. The report states that up until now, the police have every notice or information that they have received aimed at solving the circumstances of her death. “Only after a detailed study of the Channel 7 documentary, and new information, we will be able to say more” it says in the report. A few days ago they said that they have no new evidence and that they cannot speak about a suspect because the autopsy did not show the cause of Britt Lapthorne’s death.

3 Victims of Dubrovnik Fake Police Make Contact All three women described the attempted kidnapping in front of the Fuego club where Britt Lapthorne was last seen.
The three girls said that whilst they were in Dubrovnik, a group of men tried to kidnap them around the time that Britt Lapthorne disappeared, report the Australian media. The investigation that Australia’s Channel 7 showed during the show Saturday Night, links Britt Lapthorne with the young tourists that managed to escape the kidnap attempts. Britt Lapthorne was last seen in the Fuego club in Dubrovnik on September 18, 2008. Her body was found three weeks later at the Boninovo beach nearby. The young Australian Amber gave the police new leads, saying that only five days before the disappearance of Britt Lapthorne a group of men tried to kidnap her. Amber left the Fuego club and headed home when a truck pulled over next to her, in which there was a man that tried to kidnap her. “I heard a car accelerate and I turned around and saw a blue van with two men in the front seat and a man hanging out the side sliding door, coming towards me” “I have never run so fast or screamed so loud in my life” said Amber. Besides this Australian, two other girl talked about attempted kidnappings. Jennifer Blanchard, a tourist from New York, said that ten days after the disappearance of Britt Lapthorne, two men came up to her in front of the Fuego club. They tried to arrest her, but she realised that instead of a police badge they showed her a credit card, so she fled. The photo robot of the person believed to have attacked Jennifer Blanchard was shown to the Australian who presented herself as Kate, who two men also tried to kidnap a year ago from the Fuego club. Kate recognised the person on the photo robot that attacked her. We add that the Dubrovnik resident Vinko Cosmai, the owner of the Fuego night club, said in a conversation for the newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija, that he will sue the Australian television station “Channel 7” for false claims. Channel 7’s documentary about the death of the Australian Britt Lapthrne claims that his club is the gathering place of an organized group of kidnappers who kidnap girls and women who are foreign tourists to Dubrovnik.

IVANA HODAK MURDER Minister: We Definitely Have Murderer Of I. Hodak Croatian Interior Minister said it was not fair to say that the police did not arrest the murderer of Ivana Hodak.
MOUNT VELEBIT, CROATIA - During his visit to the Mountain Rescue Service (GSS) search at Mount Velebit, looking for the missing Cessna plane, Croatian Interior Minister Tomislav Karamarko said it was not fair to say that the police did not arrest the murderer of Ivana Hodak, the Vecernji list daily reports. Answering to the question if he can say with certainty that the man who killed Ivana Hodak was actually arrested, Karamarko replied that he was absolutely certain of it. - Only theories which appear after so much of hard work and energy invested into solving this case are contrary. Such versions and thesis are nor fair, but this is part of our job and the most important thing for us is for the killer to be where he belongs – Karamarko told the Vecernji list daily. He also commented on the Britt Lapthorne case. Accusations of Australian reporters, who state that officers in Dubrovnik admitted that there were attempted kidnappings, just when they provided evidence on two more cases, were dubbed speculations by Karamarko, adding that the police would look into it, but these images in the media do not show Croatia in good light.

ZAGREB, CROATIA – On Monday afternoon, the Slovenian parliament adopted with a two-thirds majority the Law on the Ratification of Croatia’s Accession Protocol for Entry into NATO. Out of the total 86 members of parliament who were resent at the session, 75 voted for the law, while 11 voted against. Beforehand, members of the Slovenian parliament unanimously adopted the law on Albania’s accession protocol to NATO. Croatia’s Foreign Ministry hails the Slovenian parliament’s decision The Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integrations commends the decision of the Croatian parliament about adopting the law on Croatia joining NATO, the ministry said in statement. Croatia is also soon expecting the protocol on accession to NATO from the remaining NATO members – Greece, Iceland, Luxembourg, The Netherlands and Portugal – so Croatia could take part as a full member in April’s NATO summit in Strasbourg and Kehl, on occasion of the marking of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of NATO

AFTER ENTERING NATO Barack Obama to Visit Croatia in April? Obama could spend a few hours during April visiting one of the new NATO members, either Croatia or Albania.
According to sources close to the Whitehouse, the American president Barack Obama could visit Zagreb in April, writes Globus. Unofficial sources state that the American president could visit at the start of April, because he will probably attend a G20 meeting in London. After that, on April 3 and 4, he will meet the leaders of NATO at the NATO summit which is celebrating its 60th anniversary. After that, Obama could, it was said, visit one of the new NATO members for a few hours, either Croatia or Albania. However, even if there is on visit, the presidents and premiers of Croatia and Albania will most probably receive a special invitation for the Whitehouse, where they should meet with Obama in May. Meeting the new American president is very important for Croatia, especially if premier Ivo Sanader’s strategy of France pressuring Slovenia for Croatia’s entry into the European Union does not work, because Sanader will be able to let Obama know about that problem. US are in deep trouble...circus is gone on tour, no help for US..

Bodies of Crew Have not Been Found! Despite the fact that all media are reporting that the bodies have been found, the police spokeswoman denied this.
SENJ, CROATIA – After the first parts of the crashed aircraft were found on Tuesday morning, stories began going round that the bodies of the crew members had also been found. In order to reveal the truth, we contacted Lila-Senj police spokeswoman Kristina Maodus. - The Cessna has not been found, only parts of it. The bodies have also not been found. They could During the search, there was an avalanche that rolled onto the special police member and he broke his leg. Kristina Maodusbe in the vicinity of the parts of the plane, but for now that is only speculation. The rain is making the search difficult, as is the unattainable area that is rigged with mines. It is already getting dark and the search will stop for today – she told us. Special police officer suffered serious injuries When asked if a special police member had been injured during the search, she said: - During the search, there was an avalanche that rolled onto the special police member and he broke his leg. Because of the break and other injuries he sustained he will be hospitalised at the Gospic Hospital – the spokesman told us. We wanted to know if there any clues that would indicate why the crash occurred. - It is difficult to say. The details of the accident will be known only after the on-sight investigation is completed – Maodus said and added that numerous members of the special police are there on the field to continue the search which was started six days ago. A member of the Search and Rescue Service, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the speculation is that the accident occurred when the pilot of the Cessna, while flying towards the Vagan Summit on Mount Velebit, suddenly turned the aircraft, which the plane could not withstand, so it crashed.

CHEAPER FREEWAY TOLL FEES Parliament to Discuss Concession for Motorcyclists The SDP party proposes that motorcyclists be a special group who would pay 50 percent less tolls than first group vehicles
ZAGREB, CROATIA - The Croatian parliament will consider the SDP (Social Democratic Party) proposal to enable 50 percent lower freeway tolls on February 11. SDP says that this would lower the death rate of motorcycle riders, who do not want to drive on the freeways due to the high freeway tolls. They propose that motorbike riders be placed in a special group of vehicles that would pay 50 percent lower road tolls compared to first group vehicles. The Cabinet is against such a proposal, and claims that they are busy with giving permission to the Croatian freeways, to implement a new group of vehicles, for motorbikes, motor tricycles and quadcycles, which would pay 40 percent less than the first group of vehicles. SDP considers that it is an issue that should be regulated with a law, and not a cabinet decision.

POLICE CLAIM OTHERWISE Dubrovnik Residents Knew of Kidnapers for Months Back in September there were stories about men in a blue van who introduce themselves as police, then try to kidnap people
My sister told me the other day that she heard (and that is 100%), anyway, some blue van stops for you, and two special police exit, show you a badge and try to shove you into the van. That occurred, maybe two weeks ago in Gruz. Two girls and two guys from Australia were down probably in the park, and one girl went to buy cigarettes at the kiosk, and the others went to sit in the car and the van probably stopped for her, they showed her a badge and tried to shove her into the van, then her two friends saw that and ran towards the others, and they started running…and it was as if it was like that at the post office two-three days later. God forbid. Anyway, that special police officer that told my sister this said that you should not play with that, and that we girls should take care of ourselves and not go anywhere alone. The text by a girl, under the pseudonym SpongeBobThe disappearance of the Australian Britt Lapthorne and the Channel 7 documentary about the close encounters by other girls, have left consequences on Dubrovnik. Stories started to circulate warning visitors of nightclubs to take care of men travelling in a blue van who introduce themselves as special police officers, and who kidnap people. Young people knew that kidnapers drive around city with van The story of suspicious guys in a blue van appeared in September 2008, on an internet forum only two weeks after the disappearance of Britt Lapthorne. A girl under the pseudonym “Spongebob” tells the story of her sister who, around September 12, in Gruz, experienced an attempted kidnapping by men in a blue van who introduced themselves as special police officers. “Two girls and two guys from Australia were in the park. One girl went to buy cigarettes at the kiosk, and all the others went to sit in their car. The van then probably stopped for her, showing her a badge and trying to throw her into the van. Her two friends saw that and ran towards them, and they ran away” writes “Spongebob”. Disappearance of Britt Lapthorne The Australian citizen Britt Lapthorne (21) disappeared on September 18, 2008 in Dubrovnik, in yet to be determined circumstances. The last time she was seen alive is in the night hours in front of the “Fuego” club, leaving in the company of two girls and five girls.Police knew about attempted kidnappings? The girl states that her sister did not hear this on the street, but that a member of the special police told her, and warned her to take care and not go anywhere by herself. However, her story tells that this was not an isolated incident, and that similar things occurred two or three days earlier near a post office in Dubrovnik. Remember, the CCTV video footage shows the disputed blue van which Britt Lapthorne’s parents believe is involved in the disappearance of their daughter. In the Channel 7 documentary, three girls described attempted kidnappings in front of the “Fuego” club, by men who introduced themselves as police officers, because of which they concluded that an organized group of kidnappers act in the club. My sister told me the other day that she heard (and that is 100%), anyway, some blue van stops for you, and two special police exit, show you a badge and try to shove you into the van. Romance In The Air
Valentine’s Day is Every Day for Those In Love Valentine’s Day is around the corner, even though many believe that it is only a marketing trick, some still believe in romance and love.
ZAGREB, CROATIA - The day once dedicated to love and dedication, has today become only a marketing trick that numerous retailers cash in on. At least this is what most of Zagreb’s residents think when we asked them if they were preparing any surprises for their better halves, and what Valentine’s Day means for them. Why we celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14 One of the theories of marking Valentine’s Day is the memory of the priest Valentine, who secretly married soldiers even though he should not have. In a time when Christianity was a young religion, the emperor Claudius prohibited soldiers from entering marriage. However, Valentine ignored this and held marriage ceremonies. Even though love knows no boundaries, the emperor’s hand reached Valentine, who threw him in a dungeon and beheaded him on February 14. Not long after his death, the people declared Valentine to be a saint.Zagreb’s residents go on romantic weekends for Valentine’s Day Most of Zagreb's citizens we asked do not know exactly how the story of Valentine goes. Even though many think that some king or bishop was in question, few know the story of emperor Claudius who prohibited soldiers from getting married. However, regardless of that, Valentine held marriage ceremonies. Unfortunately, the priest was unable to escape the emperor’s hand, who threw him into a dungeon and beheaded him on February 14. Since then February 14 has been marked as the day for love. In accordance with that, every year the tourist agencies prepare special packages for a romantic weekend outside the city. However, this year people are more restrained in going on a trip. “This year we do not have any special packages, but people nonetheless express their wishes” said a source from the Bantours tourist agency, adding that the number of requests has not increased with Valentine’s Day. On the other hand, the tourist agency Integral says that a large number of Valentine’s Day offers have been sold. “There are more requests than accommodation. We have nothing on offer in Zagreb and its surroundings, but people are very interested in weekends in Opatija, which are nearly sold out” they say at the agency. Also, agencies are recording increasing interest with the pass of the January and cold days, so they expect more people to contact them with queries. Whoever you decide to spend Valentine’s Day with, with gifts or without, it is most important that you are with someone you love, because regardless of what others day, Valentine’s Day a day about love, and not marketing.
