Default Ebola and Lujo

New Ebola-Like Virus Kills Four In Africa

A virus similar to Ebola has killed four people in Africa, with one only narrowly recovering.

The virus has been named the Lujo, after the three towns that it seemed to have developed in, Johannesburg, Lusaka, and Zambia.

The disease seemed to have started with a travel agent that lived in Zambia. She went into the hospital with vomiting, fever, chills, and bleeding gums. It wasn’t long before she went into shock, and eventually passed away as her organs shut down.

The symptoms are all similar to Ebola, which kills more then half of those who catch it every year. It appears that Lujo is transmitted in the same way as well, through inhaling dust particles that carry the illness through rat droppings.

Four health workers who treated the woman before proper health precautions were met fell ill as well, with three passing away, and one recovering.

Lujo Virus: Deadly Virus

By Dan Sevigny, Community Contributor -- Published: May 29, 2009

The Lujo Virus caused a major scare in Africa this week due to it’s unnerving similarities to the Ebola Virus that threatened to destroy the continent in the late 70’s.

The Lujo Virus infected five people last fall, four of them died and showed bled from multiple orifices of their body, as was the case with the Ebola Virus. The one man who survived may have been helped by immune-system boosting drugs given to him by doctors.

Resveratrol, a multi-purpose supplement can act as a highly effective immune system booster and life-prolonging compound. Commonly found in wine, the compound can keep you healthy and prolong your life. You can buy Resveratrol here in the United States from a company called Vinotol; Vinotol is giving away free resveratrol trials here: Free Vinotol Trials.

It is unclear where the virus originated, but it is suspected that the strain is related to a strain found in rodents. Dr. Ian Lipkin of the Columbia University is an epidemiologist and was involved in the discovery. Check back for more on this story as it unfolds.
