Thumbs up Russia delivers supersonic cruise missiles to Syria

Military source confirms delivery of missiles, according to an AFP report; second official says missiles will protect Syria from 'possible attack from the sea.'

A military source told the Interfax news agency, “The Yakhont supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles have been delivered to Syria," although it was not made clear exactly when the shipment was made.

A second Russian official speaking to Interfax said the missiles "will be able to protect Syria's entire coast against a possible attack from the sea."

Russia signed a contract reportedly worth at least $300 million in 2007 to supply Syria with cruise missiles, and Russia intended to deliver a total of 72 of the missiles to Syria, AFP reported.

It was not clear how many of the missiles have so far been delivered by Russia to Syria.

Report: Israel warns of Russian arms sale to Syria

By REUTERS

05/09/2013 04:42

WASHINGTON - Israel warned the United States in recent days that Russia plans to sell advanced ground-to-air missile systems to Syria despite Western pressure on Moscow to hold off on such a move, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.

The newspaper said US officials had confirmed they were analyzing the Israeli reports but would not comment on whether they believed the sale of S-300 missile batteries was near.

No comment was immediately available from officials at the Pentagon or US State Department.

The government of Syrian President Bashar Assad has been seeking to purchase the advanced S-300 missile batteries, which can intercept both manned aircraft and guided missiles, from Moscow for many years.

Western nations have repeatedly urged Russia to block the sale, which they argue could complicate any international intervention in Syria's escalating civil war. LOL!

The Journal said the information provided to Washington by Israel showed that Syria has been making payments on a 2010 agreement with Moscow to buy four batteries for $900 million, including a payment made this year through Russia's foreign-development bank, known as the VEB.

The paper said the package included six launchers and 144 operational missiles, each with a range of 125 miles (200 miles), with an initial shipment expected in the next three months.

While the effectiveness of Syria's aging air force is unclear, most experts believe that its air-defense missile system, which was upgraded after a 2007 Israeli strike on a suspected nuclear site, remains quite potent.

Al-Nusra Front denies chief wounded in Syria

The powerful jihadist group Al-Nusra Front has denied that its chief Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani was wounded in fighting near the Syrian capital of Damascus.

“Dear brothers, please note that what is being reported by some channels about the injury to Sheikh al-Jawlani in Damascus is not true, thank God,” Nusra leader Al-Ghareeb al-Muhajir al-Qahtani said in a tweet late on Wednesday.

He accused the Syrian regime of also lying about the death of another fighter in central Syria.

“If the leadership is injured or the leadership is killed, jihad will go on until Judgment Day, but we should point out that the news of the injury to Sheikh Jawlani is incorrect,” he added.

Jawlani was reported wounded by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights watchdog, which said he had been hurt in southern Damascus province.
The Britain-based group, which relies on a network of activists, lawyers and doctors inside Syria for its information, was able to say only that Jawlani had been hit in the foot.

Free Syrian Army rebels defect to Islamist group Jabhat al-Nusra

Syria's main armed opposition group, the Free Syrian Army (FSA), is losing fighters and capabilities to Jabhat al-Nusra, an Islamist organisation with links to al-Qaida that is emerging as the best-equipped, financed and motivated force fighting Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Evidence of the growing strength of al-Nusra, gathered from Guardian interviews with FSA commanders across Syria, underlines the dilemma for the US, Britain and other governments as they ponder the question of arming anti-Assad rebels.

Illustrating their plight, FSA commanders say that entire units have gone over to al-Nusra while others have lost a quarter or more of their strength to them recently.

"Fighters feel proud to join al-Nusra because that means power and influence," said Abu Ahmed, a former teacher from Deir Hafer who now commands an FSA brigade in the countryside near Aleppo. "Al-Nusra fighters rarely withdraw for shortage of ammunition or fighters and they leave their target only after liberating it," he added. "They compete to carry out martyrdom [suicide] operations."

Abu Ahmed and others say the FSA has lost fighters to al-Nusra in Aleppo, Hama, Idlib and Deir al-Zor and the Damascus region. Ala'a al-Basha, commander of the Sayyida Aisha brigade, warned the FSA chief of staff, General Salim Idriss, about the issue last month. Basha said 3,000 FSA men have joined al-Nusra in the last few months, mainly because of a lack of weapons and ammunition. FSA fighters in the Banias area were threatening to leave because they did not have the firepower to stop the massacre in Bayda, he said.

The FSA's Ahrar al-Shimal brigade joined al-Nusra en masse while the Sufiyan al-Thawri brigade in Idlib lost 65 of its fighters to al-Nusra a few months ago for lack of weapons. According to one estimate the FSA has lost a quarter of all its fighters.

Al-Nusra has members serving undercover with FSA units so they can spot potential recruits, according to Abu Hassan of the FSA's al-Tawhid Lions brigade.

Ideology is another powerful factor. "Fighters are heading to al-Nusra because of its Islamic doctrine, sincerity, good funding and advanced weapons," said Abu Islam of the FSA's al-Tawhid brigade in Aleppo. "My colleague who was fighting with the FSA's Ahrar Suriya asked me: 'I'm fighting with Ahrar Suriya brigade, but I want to know if I get killed in a battle, am I going to be considered as a martyr or not?' It did not take him long to quit FSA and join al-Nusra. He asked for a sniper rifle and got one immediately."

Kerry warns Russia against selling high-performance missiles to Syria

By Anne Gearan and Joby Warrick,

Updated: Friday, May 10, 10:08 AM

ROME — Secretary of State John F. Kerry on Thursday cautioned Russia against selling advanced *surface-to-air missiles to Syrian government forces, as U.S. officials warned that the delivery of the arms would threaten Israel and undercut efforts to reach a political agreement.

“We’ve made it crystal clear that we prefer that Russia would not supply them assistance,” Kerry said during a news conference with Italy’s new top diplomat. “That is on record. That has not changed.”

Kerry declined to directly denounce the reported agreement between Russia and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, but his warning to Moscow was unmistakable.

The United States has long said that the proliferation of surface-to-air missiles “is potentially destabilizing with respect to the state of Israel,” Kerry said. “We have made it very clear historically that that is a concern of the United States.”

Russia has long supplied Assad’s forces, but the potential sale of antiaircraft weapons reported Thursday by the Wall Street Journal threatens to undermine the agreement that Kerry won in Moscow this week to press jointly for peace talks between Assad and his U.S.-backed opponents.

Moscow has previously sparred with Western governments over sales of helicopter and tank parts to the embattled Assad regime. But the S-300 missiles, if delivered, would represent a huge leap in Syria’s ability to defend against Israeli airstrikes and any effort to impose a no-fly zone in support of anti-Assad rebels.

The S-300 system, considered one of the most potent air-defense systems in use, can track as many as 100 incoming aircraft or missiles at once, and engage up to a dozen, at long range.

“It would be a game-changer,” a senior Western diplomat said of the reported decision to offer the missiles to Assad. The diplomat, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because details of the reported offer remain classified, speculated that Moscow could be seeking leverage ahead of talks on a possible political settlement to the Syrian crisis.

Russia was heavily criticized in 2007 when it signed a deal to sell S-300 batteries to Iran for $800 million. Russian officials eventually terminated the contract, citing new U.N. resolutions banning the export of advanced missile systems to Tehran.

“After discussions with us, they did decide not to provide the missiles to the Iranians,” recalled Dennis Ross, who was a senior Middle East adviser to the Obama administration in 2010, when Russia halted the missile sale to Iran. “If they proceed now, it hardly signals that they are prepared to walk away from Assad.”

Kerry has declined to draw a comparison between the military aid provided by Moscow to the Syrian government and what has, until now, been the U.S. choice to send only humanitarian and nonmilitary assistance to the rebel forces. President Obama is considering whether to reverse that decision and provide arms to the rebels, as some Arab states are doing.

Kerry met earlier Thursday with the foreign minister of Jordan, which is staggering under the weight of more than 500,000 Syrian refugees. Kerry said that about $43 million of a new $100 million U.S. aid package pledged for Syrian refugees will go to Jordan.

Assad should continue air strikes on all Al-Nusra compounds. Level the entire area.

As it is, they drive young women over the border, where fat old Saudi men are waiting to make them their whores. Such is the kuffar of Al Nusrah. May God rain fire upon you.

You're blind.

The real rapist are Hezbollah

Look at my video above.

Translation of video:
he was saying that we raped women and killed 70 innocents and 100 soldiers and the places they did these evil acts and then he was asked why he did the crimes he said cause NassrAllah told them that they are the liberators and that you people have to go because they are killing the innocent brothers in Syria so you have to go and kill the rebels and that is when the guy interrogating said that we will use the Law of Allah to judge what we do based on your crimes

I am sick of your kuffar videos, blowing up what is Holy and right. Even the Minarets where the foot of Issa will touch first when he arrives.

Next Al Nusra will be raping pilgrims for sport and fun.

Hezbollah has the guts to fight against Israel, and win. Al Nusrah fights on the side of all musrakeen and kuffar, and their friend Al Shaitan.

Al Nusrah, is fighting on for the Zionists, both in Israel, the US, Saudi Arabia, and other lands where the rulers wear their pants around their knees, waiting for the touch of their masters. Like their masters, so to is Al Nusrah.

They're absolute punks doing as Israel bids. How disgusting will be their eventual reward.

Israel prefer Assad than opposition.

Israel are safe when Syria is under Assad.
