Greek Coalition Parties and Opposition Lose Support, Poll Shows

By Eleni Chrepa - Sep 6, 2012 12:30 AM GMT-0500

Greece’s New Democracy party led by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has declined in popularity since the June 17 election, a poll for To Pontiki newspaper showed.

Of those surveyed by Pulse RC, 22.5 percent said they’d vote for New Democracy, the largest party in parliament, compared with 29.7 percent of votes the party won in the last election, according to the poll. That level of support would not be enough to secure a parliamentary majority.

The socialist Pasok party scored 7.5 percent, a drop from 12.3 percent, while Democratic Left had 4 percent, down from an election result of 6.3 percent. Both Pasok and Democratic Left take part in the coalition government.

Support for Syriza, the biggest party that rejects Greece’s international loan agreement, fell to 21.5 percent from 26.9 percent. Support for the Communist Party remained at 4.5 percent, while the nationalist Golden Dawn party would win 9.5 percent if elections were held today, up from 6.9 percent, becoming Greece’s third-biggest party. Support for the Independent Greeks dropped to 6 percent, down from 7.5 percent, the survey showed.

The poll was conducted from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4 and surveyed 1,204 people. The survey has a margin of error of as much as 2.8 percentage points.

[every party but Golden Dawn is losing support, while GD gains!]

Golden Dawn Rises Again, Overtakes PASOK
By Andy Dabilis on September 6, 2012 in Economy, News, Politics

Capitalizing on growing social unrest over record unemployment, resentment against immigrants and rising crime, and planned new government austerity measures, the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party has jumped into third place in popularity among Greek political parties, overtaking the once-dominant PASOK Socialists.

According to a Pulse survey, Golden Dawn, which won 18 seats in Parliament in the June 17 elections with 6.97 percent of the vote, now has 10.5 percent while PASOK, under new leader Evangelos Venizelos who has given his support to the ruling government of New Democracy Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, has fallen to only 8 percent.

The Democratic Left is also a member of the uneasy coalition government but, in a sign it is also feeling the wrath of disenchanted voters furious that the leftist members of the government have reneged on campaign pledges to resist more austerity measures, has fallen two points to only 4.5 percent.

New Democracy retains first place with 25 percent, falling from 29.7 percent after it won in June, but only one point ahead of the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) which is at 24 percent and finished a close second in the elections. SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras has been hounding Samaras for going back on his word to try to renegotiate terms of a second pending bailout from international lenders who have demanded $14.6 billion in new cuts and more reforms.

The biggest beneficiary of growing disillusionment in Greece, however, has been Golden Dawn, which got only 0.29 percent of the vote in the 2009 elections, won by PASOK with 44 percent, showing how far the Socialists have fallen. Venizelos and Democratic Left leader Fotis Kouvelis are now reportedly trying to distance themselves from the coming cuts they had supported.

Golden Dawn’s platform, critics said, is based on hate, fear and xenophobia and the party is openly anti-immigrant and has been linked to beatings and attacks on immigrants, which it denies. Samaras, trying to gain the right as well, has initiated a roundup of illegal immigrants in a bid to ease public perception that the foreigners are to blame for rising crime as Greeks suffer waves of pay cuts, tax hikes and slashed pensions, with more coming.

People are captivated by words. The naive thing 'mainstream,' 'moderate,' 'extremist' and 'radical' mean something, but in reality they mean next to nothing. They're real meaning is functional. They function as labels each party tries to stigmatize the other with or enhance itself.

Where's the extremism here?

- Golden Dawn wants illegal aliens shipped back where they came from.
- Golden Dawn wants the border secured.
- Golden Dawn wants Greek employers to hire Greeks.
- Golden Dawn helps protect old people from attack by alien thugs.
- Golden Dawn is proud of Greek heritage.

Not a single position of these is denotatively fit to be described as extreme. Extreme is a label stuck on the party by the true extremists - the global, controlled, anti-nativist, pro-internationalist, pro-human-fungibility mass media.

Support for Golden Dawn rises, poll shows

Neofascist Golden Dawn party has increased its popularity among Greek voters, an opinion poll published on Thursday showed.

According to a Pulse survey, which was published Thursday in To Podiki weekly newspaper, support for Golden Dawn stood at 10.5 percent, placing it at third place behind coalition leader New Democracy (25 percent) and the hard-left SYRIZA opposition party (24 percent).

The once-dominant PASOK socialists have slid to fourth place with 8 percent of the vote.

Golden Dawn and KKE communists were the only parties that have managed to increase their share since the June general elections, the poll showed.

Golden Dawn, which wants to rid the crisis-hit nation of all immigrants, has been linked weasel word to a number of attacks on foreigners over the past few months.

[Chicago Tribune] Support for Greek far-right party surging, poll says

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece's ultra-nationalist Golden Dawn party has increased its support among austerity-hit Greeks since entering parliament this year, and would emerge as the third largest party if elections were held now, a new poll showed on Thursday.

The extreme-right party, which wants to rid Greece of all foreigners including what it calls the "stench" of immigrants, has overtaken the once-mighty Socialists, the Pulse poll for the To Pontiki newspaper said.

Backing for Golden Dawn, which has been linked to a rise in attacks against migrants in recent months, stood at 10.5 percent, up nearly 4 percentage points since the June elections that gave the party a foothold in parliament.

The party's rabidly anti-immigrant message has struck a chord with a significant minority of Greeks as the country worries about a rise in crime and struggles through its worst post-war economic crisis, which has left nearly one in four jobless.

The poll showed support for the conservative New Democracy, which heads the country's pro-bailout coalition, had dipped to 25 percent from 29.7 percent in June, while backing for the radical leftist Syriza party also fell, by nearly 3 percentage points, to 24 percent.

The PASOK Socialists, a junior partner in the ruling coalition, dropped to fourth place with 8 percent of the vote, while the other government ally, Democratic Left, saw support shrink nearly 2 percentage points to 4.5 percent.

Greece's government is trying to push through a new round of deeply unpopular spending cuts worth nearly 12 billion euros for the next two years to appease its foreign lenders and secure the next tranche of aid to keep the country afloat.

[WSJ] Support for Greek Coalition Dips, Far Right Group Boosted - Poll

By Stelios Bouras

ATHENS--Greece's coalition partners have seen their popularity drop since the elections in June as they finalize the country's next round of austerity measures, according to poll results published Thursday, with ultranationalists Golden Dawn the only party to see a rise in support levels.

According to a survey prepared by Pulse RC and published in weekly To Pontiki newspaper, conservatives New Democracy--who lead the coalition government-- saw their support drop to 25% from 29.7% in the June elections.

Backing for the two junior coalition partners--Pasok and Democratic Left--also dropped. Socialists Pasok are supported by 8% of respondents, down from 12.3%, among the lowest levels seen by the party since being established in 1974. Greece's small Democratic Left party saw its popularity drop to 4.5%, versus 6.3% at the latest national polls.

The survey, conducted Aug. 31 to Sept. 4, found that the majority of Greeks are displeased with the choices made by the government which is struggling to finalize 13.5 billion euros ($17 billion) of cuts demanded by international creditors. With the savings plan expected to be announced in coming weeks, protests to proposed cuts to pensions and public servant's salaries are picking up.

Police, firefighters and port authority employees are scheduled to demonstrate in Athens Thursday afternoon after judges and public prosecutors staged a protest at the country's Supreme Court building Wednesday.

Further demonstrations are expected in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki on Saturday where Greece's prime minister traditionally makes a keynote economic speech at an annual trade fair. This year Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will skip the speech as the government prepares for the next round of talks with representatives of the so-called troika of creditors--the International Monetary Fund, the European Union and the European Central Bank--starting Friday.

Among the seven parties represented in parliament, Golden Dawn is the big winner with 10.5% of those questioned in the survey saying they would vote for the far right party. It was backed by 6.9% of the electorate in June.

Radical left party Syriza remains the country's second most popular party, despite seeing its popularity also drop. The survey showed that 24% of voters support the party, down from 26.9% in June.

Greek unemployment rises to 24.4 per cent

By Kerin Hope in Athens

Greece’s official jobless rate hit another record in June, underscoring the effect on the country’s private sector of two years of harsh austerity aimed at bringing the budget deficit under control.

Unemployment climbed to 24.4 per cent in June from 23.1 per cent in May, with 1.2m people out of work, according to figures released on Thursday by Elstat, the independent statistical agency.

The jump in unemployment was announced as an opinion poll published in Pontiki, a satirical weekly, showed the far-right, anti-immigrant Golden Dawn party had increased its support to 10.5 per cent and overtaken the socialists for the first time.

The poll by Pulse gave the centre-right New Democracy party, governing in coalition with the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (Pasok) and Democratic Left, 25 per cent compared to 24 per cent for the leftwing opposition Syriza party, which calls for tearing up Greece’s bailout agreement with international creditors.

Golden Dawn was the only party that rose in popularity since the June 17 election, when it captured 6.9 per cent of the vote to enter parliament for the first time. It campaigned on a platform of deporting an estimated 500,000 foreign workers in Greece. Party militants have been linked with increasing numbers of attacks on immigrants since the election, according to Greek anti-racist groups.

“There’s a widespread view that immigrants have taken away jobs from Greeks because they accept lower wages and that Golden Dawn is the only political party that’s addressing this issue,” said Takis Michas, a political commentator.

Greece had the eurozone’s second-highest unemployment rate after Spain, although the latest Spanish figure of 25.1 per cent was for July. Greek unemployment in the 15-24 age group, at 55 per cent, was ahead of Spain’s 52.9 per cent.

The research institute of GSEE, the Greek trade union federation, predicted in a survey released on Thursday the jobless rate would rise to 26-29 per cent by December after a fresh round of salary and pension cuts due to be implemented next month.

The institute said that Greek workers had already lost €16.2bn in salary and pension cuts since 2009, equal to 8 per cent of national output. More than 150,000 public sector workers, including the judiciary, university teachers and the military and police, face further wage cuts to be implemented next month as part of a fresh austerity package.

Some analysts believe that unemployment may already be close to 30 per cent, claiming that official statistics fail to capture sizeable numbers of self-employed workers who have shut down their businesses because of the crisis.

These days in Athens

While the Greek government decides on the latest budget cuts strikes and protests return to the streets of Athens.

During the last weeks the new coalition government led by the right wing New Democracy party has been preparing a new round of austerity measures. The budget cuts are aimed at savings upto 11.5 billion euros. Officials from the International Monetary Fund(IMF) are in Athens to carry out an inspection of government policy. The Troika(IMF, European Commission and European Central Bank) are demanding more economic reforms reportedly including a six day working week as well as further cuts to pensions. As these measures are discussed and finalised by the government Greece has seen strikes, demonstrations, continuing racist attacks and bomb blasts.

With the budget cuts likely to affect pensioners and the public sector the most there has been strike action by municipality workers, transport staff and police staff. Demonstrations by the municipality workers and pensioners were both met with intervention by the riot police(MAT) and the use of chemical agents. Other groups such as teachers and judges also say they will take strike action in the coming weeks.

In a continuation of the wave of racist attacks a Bangladeshi man was attacked and stabbed near the centre of Athens. The attack was similar to many others which have been reported recently. There has been at least 500 reported incidents in the last six months. The background to this is the election of Golden Dawn, an extreme nationalist party, to the Greek parliament and the continuing police operation to detain and ultimately deport many immigrants from Greece. Meanwhile Nikos Michaloliakos, the leader of Golden Dawn has promised to send his 'stormtroopers' onto the streets if the party is not respected in parliament.

A number of protests against this violence and the policy of the police have taken place around Greece and in different Athenian neighbourhoods throughout the week. A large number of people from the Asian and African communities took part in these protests.

In another continuing trend there were two small bomb blasts reported this week. The blasts were made using gas canisters and were directed at a National Bank branch and a police station in Athens. No one has yet claimed responsibility. Similar blasts outside banks and police stations are not uncommon and generally cause minor damage.

Shaking the pillars of society

Greek judges take part in a protest against budget cuts at the Greek Supreme court in Athens on Wednesday.

By Costas Iordanidis

Hyperactive by nature, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will be visiting the Thessaloniki International Fair for a just a few hours on Saturday. He will not be delivering the traditional keynote address about the state of the Greek economy, nor will he be giving the usual press conference to outline government policy, as prime ministers have done over the last few decades.

Of course the reason he will not be following in his predecessors’ footsteps is not that he is on a very tight schedule and faces an enormous workload. At a critical time like the present, a leader needs to be seen defending his government’s choices in front of an audience, even if it is a hostile one. But Samaras has decided to act differently and we ought to respect his choice.

The government is in an extremely difficult position. During George Papandreou’s two years at the helm, Greece’s international credibility hit rock bottom. This is widely acknowledged, but it is believed that the country is now beginning to gain back some of the stature it had lost among its European peers. The greatest loss during Papandreou’s two-year period as premier, however, was the trust of the Greek people. This was followed by a battle of false promises -- from the three partners that form the coalition government -- in two consecutive electoral campaigns that were immediately reneged, putting society in a much more rejectionist mood.

The fact that Samaras’s visit to Thessaloniki will be brief will not stop SYRIZA and the Greek Communist Party from organizing protest rallies, even though this form of action has lost its significance as an action in the eyes of the people.

The most important issue in the government’s current predicament is that it has come under fire from civil servants read: overpaid parasites, the pillars of any regime. When judges, police officers, armed forces personnel and the academic community are badly hit by cutbacks, the political leadership is left hanging. Civil servants in these sectors will obviously never break the vows they have taken to serve their state and country, but their faith in the system can be shaken, and, taken together with the gradual demise of the middle class, this creates a dangerous imbalance in the system.

Inevitably, under such circumstances, public discourse will begin to flirt with the extremes. The strength of SYRIZA and the growing influence of Chrysi Avgi (Golden Dawn) are proof of the slide toward a situation that could get out of hand. And all this because for less that three years consecutive governments refused to broaden the tax base.

The polls always underestimate the real percentage of Golden dawn. So, if the polls give 10.5, the real percentage may be close to 15%. Before the elections all the polls gave 3% to golden dawn but in both elections it get 7%. These polls are usually made by companies which are controlled by rich media businessmen who have close links with the parties of new democracy and The socialists. Many polls are unreliable and usually show higher than normally support for the big parties.

Golden Dawn, the "bogeyman" for the rotten status quo
Thursday, September 6, 2012 - 20:49

Have gone crazy the "bikes" polling companies to count the continuous rise of the movement of Greek nationalists. Third party with 10.5% showed the most recent (Pulse of the "Mouse"). What are the reasons for this rise? ... Opinions differ! However, even the mainstream media journalists are forced to admit that the ever-increasing popularity of the movement of Greek nationalists because they constantly pester the side of the Greek people and has become the ... "bogeyman" for anti-national and anti-people forces rotten metapoliteftikou establishment. Read what he writes-among others-the journalist of "Step" and Vassilis Hiotis your own conclusions:

The "bogeyman" Golden Dawn

"Six months cried the mayor of Simi, that the vessel of the Coast damaged and remain unattended maritime borders in the region, but no one heard him. At fifteen days screams smugglers boatloads disembark on the island, after the increase in controls Ebro, but again no one heard him. came out yesterday in desperate VIMA FM and said that since it can not make sense with the Ministries of Defense and Citizen Protection will seek help from the Golden Dawn! too, is a sign of the times ... And explains why the popularity of the Golden Dawn increasing.

Surely the mayor of Simi did not mean it. But it has now understood that in order to awaken the state and to deal with your problem, you need to blackmail the officials that he will shout the Golden Dawn. Since then, he saw and apoeide with the government, and he resorted to subterfuge when many fleeing and desperate attempt to force a solution.
Election circulated the rumor that some homeowners called the Golden Dawn to get from their homes to illegal immigrants who had illegally occupied. His reputation soon became legend, and the Golden Dawn kept the polling rates.

So now when someone wants to mobilize the state apparatus usually sleeps, threatening to shout the Golden Dawn and the risk before the government wakes up mechanism. Why is sure not to disembark the Golden Dawn in Simi and take action to mobilize the state.

So long as the state continues to sleep, let us not be surprised that the Golden Dawn will increase the popularity of ... ".

These are the results of political tolerance of rotten metapoliteftikou system to the criminality of various "vulnerable" groups ...

Greece is being blown away by the Brussels and Berlin blunderbuss

The strain on a country whose rulers are desperate to avoid a euro exit will lead it to poverty and disfunctionality

Unionised Greek policemen clash with riot police in Athens, during a protest about cuts. The angry glare of the threatened parasite; note the ruddy color from all the blood it's been sucking

What fucked up Greece? Greedy government living at the expense of the productive class.

Last week I was in Athens and took the metro to Syntagma Square. Like many northern Greeks, I have mixed feelings towards the capital. Northerners do not like to admit it, but we secretly enjoy the smell of jasmine – the true scent of Athens. But this time the air smelt of cordite.

Syntagma was abnormally quiet: shops shut, people halfheartedly shopping, riot police everywhere. The atmosphere crackled with the expectation of something sinister about to happen. And lo, in Monastiraki Square, afew hundred yards away, agroup of young men attacked a shop owner; just another violent episode in a city resembling a tinderbox.

The prime culprit for the disintegrating social order is the economic policy emanating from Brussels and Berlin. In 2009-10 the troika – the European Union, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank – judged that Greece had a problem of public deficits and debts due to profligacy, corruption and tax avoidance. They offered bailout loans in exchange for cuts to public spending, higher taxes, and reduced wages. Successive Greek governments have imposed austerity with alacrity, delivering a vast contraction of the deficit – perhaps even 8% of GDP by the end of 2012.

Greece lifts private ownership curbs on public utilities, ports

ATHENS, Sept 6

(Reuters) - Greece scrapped on Thursday a law obliging the state to keep a minimum stake in a string of public companies, such as the country's top electricity producer Public Power Corp and gambling firms OPAP.

This removes one of several bureaucratic obstacles to the country's much-delayed asset sale programme -- a key condition for its international bailout by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

"By decision of the cabinet of ministers, a legislative act has been signed that abolishes the minimum state stake," the finance ministry said in a statement.

Alongside PPC and OPAP, the move also concerns the country's biggest refiner Hellenic Petroleum as well as its two biggest ports and water utilities.

All these companies feature in the asset sale programme of Greece's privatisation agency HRADF, which must raise 19 billion euros by the end of 2015 as part of the EU/IMF bailout.

[summary: latest polls show Golden Dawn is rising - now the third largest party in Greece. The system is horrified]

The march of the "hard" on the right: Third Party by the Golden Dawn! - The horror of the system
Friday, September 7, 2012 - 16:46

Mutation of the Greek electorate started from last winter as a result of a policy characterized by a critical deficit of national consciousness in all aspects (economic, national, internal security, etc.) and imprinted with two sharp be ECU election on 6 May and June 17, plus starts and turns into raging torrent: The party of "hard" wing, the People's Association-Golden Dawn acquires data movement within Greek society and scares the system, the political and economic elite of the center-right and the left . In Pulse poll published today by the newspaper mouse, simply reflected what is now widely understood, even in the most systemic: The Golden Dawn is the third party, with 10.5% in the fourth difference (PASOK) and ready to "trygisei" Electoral Democracy even further, but the other parties.

Really has little meaning the collapse of electoral influence of PASOK or reduction plant at ND and SYRIZA difference. In the poll, the Golden Dawn increased by 50% in the electoral influence within 75 days after the election and all others lose (except the Communist Party that is stable ... the bottom 5%). Let's see the result of the poll before proceeding:. Reduction With the SW gathers 25% SYRIZA 24%, followed by Golden Dawn 10.5%, PASOK 8%, independent Greek 6.5%, 5%, KKE 4.5% Dimaratos

In voting intentions without reducing the number of parties does not change, but the effect is just as impressive on the Golden Dawn: SW: 22.5% SYRIZA: 21.5% Golden Dawn: PASOK 9.5%: 7.5% Independent Greeks: 6% KKE: KPS 4.5% 4% The poll was announced but not yet hard meters of 11.5 billion euros. Golden Dawn is the ultimate winner, recording an increase of 3.6% (4.6% after the reduction on valid). KKE rate increased marginally, practically in the same position with the 17th June.

PASOK, just tanking and question what and why to vote for one party, which is responsible for most social algae geopolitical catastrophe experienced by the country since 1922. "Other Party" indicates 6.5% (7%) compared to 6%, with ANTARSYA, environmentalists and Greens Creation Re-Action to catch the 1%. Finally, the percentage of undecided stands at 8.5% (9.5%). The march of the Golden Dawn - which of course will not stop here - scares the system looking for ways to respond. Already even the Independent Greeks are losses which are not serious, but not justified level dynamics, since only profits should be recorded by the drop percentages of the Southwest and the government overall. Somewhere the party has lost its shine and will have to discuss inside since it can offer a lot to the overall recovery effort of the place. SW in the loss of voting percentage is not so serious, since (akoma. ..) precedes SYRIZA, but for how long? If you turn over the first and with PASOK and the abyss Dimaratos verge of not entering the House, then the actual percentage of the Southwest, 18.92% of the election on May 6, it can be squeezed into even chamiotera rates. Overall all, even SYRIZA working ... free for the Golden Dawn! Why, who to vote for someone who believes that we should be "protected" from political extremism, especially in matters of internal security policy, SYRIZA? Democracy? Let's be serious!

For whose benefit all this? Needs no policy analytical capacity to answer: Its People-League Golden Dawn. Who will simply do what they do best and win every day. I would say the obvious, what are sold out of the political elite nor dare to think and act on the streets, neighborhoods, villages, where the state is absent. Will bring results to the lives of Greeks! "Activists" are not always looking for the "globalized" former hippies and liberals "of okas" of mental and Ekalis? Found them, but ekplixiiii: They wear overalls with military camouflage and boots! Absolute rotten system of punishment!
