Proud and Strong: An Article by John Lagos

Editors Note by George of Golden Dawn New York:

John Lagos of Pireaus, or “Yannis” as we call him in Greek, Is one of our comrades currently in prison due to the current persecutions. A well known figure in Golden Dawn, the media likes to portray him as a kind of brutal “leg breaker” or thug due to his appearance. It is yet another blatant distortion.

While I did not spend a lot of time with him since he was mostly in Pireaus, I recall a time in 2008 when John, myself and other comrades were riding the train to the Pireaus office from Athens, the train car was loaded with Pakistanis sitting in the seats, and we saw a elderly Greek woman with groceries being forced to stand while these invaders took up the seats, refusing to even think to let her sit down. John immediately spoke up and within minutes the Pakistanis were waiting for the next train, and the old woman was so thankful she could sit down.

The reality is that John is a man with heart and true compassion for his people and his country, unlike those degenerate worms the media who try and say otherwise.

Special Thanks to Kyriakos for the translation of this newspaper article published today in Greece:

Wednesday night. I sit in my cell. In the next cell is our leader Nikos Michaloliakos and with him the exceptional comrade Christos Pappas. Away from our people and away from those things which we have gotten used to, although far closer to our ideas. So much closer to ourselves. I march in thought with the comrades of our fatherland. The comrades of our nation. This is how it had to be. It had to fall upon us the weight of incarceration, of persecution, It is very possible that anyone of our fellow comrades could find themselves in our position. Anyone of those special men who for many years have competed against everyone and everything. And thus, this has not fallen upon “us” or “them”, it has fallen upon GOLDEN DAWN.

GOLDEN DAWN the thriller that has written a bright history. Organized in idealized myth. This GOLDEN DAWN that is difficult to fathom for all those fashionably vain and for all those political peacocks who believed they will turn us into them. GOLDEN DAWN who has battled for many years next to the Greek citizen. GOLDEN DAWN who is being persecuted by the spiteful admirers of contracted mega weasels . From all the big station owners and the schemes they implicate. GOLDEN DAWN who is honoured in the heart and enjoys the respect of every Greek countryman of ours. Of the Greeks who had not stolen , who had not sold their souls, who stand firmly in their principles and their values. GOLDEN DAWN who makes us proud. If someone asked me this minute if I would trade something to be “released”, I would answer whole-heartedly and honestly NO. I would prefer to be here 100 times proud of my values, and not in with the masses of degradation and the rotten. I am proud I am with my leader, that I am with my fellow comrade Christos Pappas. I am laughing hearing on the news them discussing “how we intend to kill”, I cant help but be induced into uncontrolable laughter. What kind of clowns are you?

Carry on you human puppets. Show us how low you can go, reach the quality of the “human garbage” that has manifested itself. Then you go to your homes and look admiringly into the mirror. Look well because across from you are every dispicable thing that exists. The “human garbage” that has probably reached the lowest point in human emotions. Look at your worthlessness. You are the worst. This too is a title. You have one meritably without resistance. By far you are the worst. Bravo to the “distinguished” journalists.

Fellow comrades I am proud of what I have done, I am proud that I am being persecuted simply for my political beliefs and the ideas I represent. We have shamed them up until now everywhere. On the streets, in the town squares, in the neighborhoods, in Parliament. Now we have shamed them from within prison. I am very proud of the giant men are being persecuted in this manner, and in return they spit in their faces. I am proud of the women tigers we have within our movement who have not lost a moments courage. For one of these women are worth more the 1000 mamas-boys that circulate outside. I am very proud for every one of you. And I thank God that he has found me worthy to be counted amongst the members of GOLDEN DAWN to live all this.

I feel blessed. Carry on strongly! Keep us proud, and in regards to us, do not worry at all. I swear to you we are more determined, more strong, and in good spirits. Brothers, hold your heads high. We will disturb them even more.

COMRADES
LONG LIVE GOLDEN DAWN!
LONG LIVE OUR LEADER!

J. LAGOS M.P. 2′nd district Pireaus from binding of the commonfolk – Golden Dawn.

[marxist analysis of GD]

Golden Dawn, Bonapartism and the Greek ruling class
Written by Hamid Alizadeh
Monday, 14 October 2013

This article was written before the arrests of the leadership of Golden Dawn. However, the analysis it contains has been absolutely confirmed by the subsequent events. The Communist Tendency follows the developments and will publish further articles with our analysis and conclusions.

The removal of key police chiefs from their positions, the controversial appearance of potential coup protagonists, the intense investigations into the Golden Dawn (GD), the first arrests of its members and the daily revelations in the bourgeois media regarding its structures, operations and plans, are very important facts that should be examined in a serious manner by the labour movement and the left.

The removal of two generals, who were in charge of south and central Greece and of a further eight high ranking officers who were in charge of the security branch of the headquarters of the Greek police, called EKAM, of the branch for the Prevention of Organized Crime in Attica, of the Department of Arms and Explosives Safety in Attica, of the Y.A.T. (riot police), of the Team Delta, and of the Police Department of Nikaia, was no routine change of administration. In reality it is an admission of complicity with the GD and of the cover up of its operation in the previous years. For these reasons, with obvious political costs for the government, it would be a mistake to assume that it happened because of the media.

Of course no activist of the labour movement and the left needed to witness the government removing these high ranking police officers to understand their close relationship with the GD. What was not realized, however, was the depth and broad scope of this connection. The latest removals reveal that the influence and even the control of the fascists over sections of the state apparatus were quite extensive. Let us recall that it was Engels who described the state as ultimately being “a body of armed men”.

The influence of the fascists within the police forces is verified indirectly, but clearly from the official statistics which were recently publicized regarding the latest attacks of the GD. According to the Ministry for the “Protection of the Citizen”, GD has been responsible for 38 offences and criminal acts this year alone. The “Public Defendant” announced on the 26th September that in the last 16 months the attacks by GD have been 281. These attacks resulted in 400 people injured and 4 killed. Certainly, the real number is much higher than that, but what matters most is not the accuracy of the figures but the fact that they reveal an operation on the part of GD that is so intensive that it requires the coverage and backing of the state “law enforcement authorities”.

The military also has been heavily involved in the state’s deep connections with GD, as the government has indirectly admitted. This is clear from the on-going investigation that the Ministry of Defence is conducting after interviews of GD members appeared in bourgeois media according to which army officers have been training GD “attack squads” in military barracks. Just a few days ago we saw publicized a political manifesto of an aspiring military coup of the Union of Reserve Commandos, which uses in key points the same tone as the GD. The judges of the Supreme Court called a meeting to discuss this manifesto as they did not consider it a laughing matter. All these facts indicate that fascist elements have built up a strong presence within the state apparatus.

Almost three years ago in our analysis of Greek Perspectives (December 2010) we pointed out: “It is certain that within the armed forces of the state apparatus serious developments are taking place. We will soon see developing a tendency for a more ‘active’ involvement of the police and the military in politics, especially of the upper command and Special Forces, as is customary in Greek capitalism. As order gets disrupted and chaos starts to emerge in the form of protests and strikes, then extremists in these sectors of the state apparatus, who are a natural breeding ground for extreme reactionary groups and conspiracies, will start getting the upper hand…”

The latest developments have verified our predictions. The turning point for the process that is described in the above paragraph came in the double elections of May-June 2012. Since then this layer of extreme reactionaries has had a specific point of reference and leadership: the Golden Dawn.

The neo-Nazis of the GD were not preparing their organization to play the role of a party with a high level of electoral, nor did they ever imagine that one day this would ever happen. The founding directives of the GD established it as an unofficial fascist branch of state oppression. The neo-Nazis saw were transformed into a significant political force due to the collapse of the bourgeois political camp. The fact that they now had MPs reinforced their profile. Using this as a vehicle they created strong cells within the military and police, and also new powerful friends within the ruling class.

The news that is being published daily in the bourgeois media mention reports on relations between the Tax and Revenue Office and the GD; which proves its closeness with at least a section of the big capitalists. Specifically, the news mentions, “financing of illegal activities from big businesses, ship owners, even bishops”, that indicates that the neo-Nazis were becoming a rising force within the ranks of capital.

GD was especially active in Perama and the surrounding areas (the shipbuilding hub), trying to build a “nationalist union”. This is de facto proof of their close relations with the ship owners. One year ago during the budget discussion in the parliament the issue of low taxation on the ship owners was put forward. The MP of GD Panagiotaros stated that his party disagrees with this, using these words: “You found the easy solution of taxing and of course lots of ship owners will find the even easier solution of changing their flags so you’ll end up collecting no money (…) Once the ship owners gave all their ships for the fight of 1821 [the Greek war of independence], for the Balkan wars, for 1940. They are willing now, they just need the appropriate reciprocation” (!!!).

As we have repeatedly pointed out, the consistently high number of votes for the GD in the polls did not lead to the consolidation of a massive fascist party, as was the case with Hitler or Mussolini. This proved totally unachievable, as the rising social support that was expressed in the polls was mainly an act of belated and blind protest against the corrupt bourgeois political system. The fact that the support for the GD in the opinion polls after the murder of Pavlos Fyssas has fallen and the fact that only 1.5% of their voters say that they embrace its ideology, proves this point. However, public funding and donations from ship owners have provided the GD with the means to buy off impoverished lumpen elements and to build a sizeable army of paid murderers. An ex-member of the GD in an interview with the newspaper “Ethnos” stated that the GD could mobilize 3000 armed men.

The statement by Loverdos (ex-PASOK minister) some time ago that the “Golden Dawn is the only authentic movement” and the promotion of the GD by the newspaper of T. Anastasiadis reflect its increasing popularity within the bourgeoisie. The government used the GD in various ways, as a political scarecrow for the workers and youth, as an auxiliary power in its actions of oppression and expulsion of immigrants, and as an excuse to promote the theory of the “two extremes” with the sole purpose of defamation of the left. As the government crisis peaked this summer with the withdrawal of DIMAR (Democratic Left), a collaboration of New Democracy and the GD at some stage began to appear as inevitable.

Leading members of ND and notorious people form the bourgeois media such as B. Papadimitriou openly posed the question of cooperating with the GD. For this plan to work the GD would have to become more “serious”, more “respectable”, meaning that it would have to transform itself into a classic far right party and drop its more openly fascist image, and then it could play the same role as Karatzaferis did in the Papadimos government [Note: Karatzaferis was leader of the right-wing conservative party, LAOS, which emerged as a right-wing split from the New Democracy, buts which has since disappeared on the electoral front after participating in governments carrying out sever austerity measures]. The GD, however, was of a different opinion.

The election results, the deep links with the state apparatus, the generous donations of the capitalists and the general sense that the ruling class needed them made the fascists more arrogant. Betting on the increased bankruptcy and isolation of the traditional leaders of capital, blinded by their sudden popularity and their new role, they believed that the time was close for them to take power, not as auxiliary partners in a ND government, but exclusively through their own powers and methods!

The recent events, the news that fills the bourgeois media every day and the unusually hostile attitude of the government towards the GD, prove that the GD had started preparing for an attempt to seize power directly. The attempt killing of KKE militants at Perama and the murder of Pavlos Fyssas immediately afterwards, were part of a plan to attack the left and the labour movement as a whole, which the fascists thought they could benefit from. For every other political party a murder would objectively pose problems. However, according to the way of thinking, actions and political goals of the fascists, this act – always of course under the right political and social conditions – they thought would be a successful propaganda point.

The plan of the fascists with their murderous attacks was to spread terror and confusion on the left, show their determination, establish “order” that supposedly has been disrupted due to the strikes and protests, and thereby seek to gain some sympathy votes from the petit bourgeois and at the same time send a message to the capitalist bosses that theirs was a ruthless fight against their class opponents. The “repented” ex-GD members in their interviews said that the peak of the first part of the plan would be a big rally at Nikaia where Michaloliakos, leader of the GD, would speak. Through all this the GD would attempt a show of power in the heart of working class neighbourhoods, trying to appear as being close to the people, and thus mount a provocation against the labour movement and the left.

Taking for granted the accelerated state of decay of the government and the essentially passive opposition of the leadership of SYRIZA, the fascists believed that this new cycle of events could put them on track to take power. Initially, this would open for them through their involvement in a right-wing government, not as a minor player, however, but as a decisive partner, and later through a coup where they could mobilize the cells of supporters in the military and police. Their plans, however, proved arrogant and unrealistic.

As we have explained for a long time now, the bourgeoisie has understood that inevitably in the future they would have to rule through the methods of Bonapartism. This, however, does not mean that they would prefer the GD to lead this, or that this Bonapartism should take the form of a classic fascist regime. They would prefer, after having exhausted all other “constitutional” political solutions of government, a form of Bonapartism dressed in parliamentary robes.

The growing independent fascist activities were undermining today’s fragile government, and also threating to block the implementation of the Troika’s plans and the position of the country inside the euro. This explains the sudden about turn and the aggressive stance of the government and the bourgeois media towards the GD.

All this is in no way an indication of an attachment to democracy on the part of those very same people who have ridden roughshod over the basic elements of bourgeois parliamentary democracy in order to pass laws and force the workers to serve the interests of the bankers and other capitalists. What we have before us is a ruling class that considers ill-timed and high risk any plans to enforce n openly a Bonapartist regime at this stage.

The fascists decided arrogantly and impatiently to act on their own. The majority of the ruling class is now punishing them for this and bringing them back under their total control. This conflict within the ruling class is not one of “fascists” versus “democrats”, but between the openly fascist elements whose models are Mussolini and Hitler and those who believe the better option is to prepare the ground for governing through presidential decrees and forms of parliamentary Bonapartism at a later stage.

Wow, 38 criminal acts and offenses this year alone from half a million people. That's a rate of one crime per 13,157 Golden Dawn voters!

“When the Supposedly “Democratic” Fear the Polls.”

By Nikos Michaloliakos

Elections without Golden Dawn is what the Nea Demokratia party wants. The mass media, and of course the powers that govern Samaras and Venizelos have the nerve to claim that the persecution of GOLDEN DAWN paliament members is not POLITICAL.
Yet, their own claims from articles in their very own newspapers have proven them to be liars. In addition they announced their plans to get Golden Dawn kicked out of parliament in advance. Is this a coincidence?

For the first time in the political history of our land, parliament members of a political party are being forcefully imprisoned, yet at the same time scandals (the Lagarde List, Papandreou etc.) are being covered up one after the other. The political persecution and imprisonment of Golden Dawn members did not have the intended effect they originally hoped for .

With pressure from the political puppets they tried to attack the peoples nationalist movement politically, ethically, statistically, but due to our inner strength it failed. This is why they are engineering other plans. Plans that are dark and dangerous for the life of this land. They desire and are attempting to, make scrap paper out of the Constitution in order to exclude Golden Dawn from the elections.

Characteristic of the Greek magazine, Epikairos, the headline read “ELECTIONS WITHOUT GOLDEN DAWN – US OR THEM – THE PLANS OF MAXIMO FOR ELECTIONS WITHOUT GOLDEN DAWN” Likewise in the newspaper, Proto Thema, the same on the front page “KEEP GOLDEN DAWN OUT OF THE BALLOT BOX – THE FINAL PLANS FROM GOVERNMENT” After all this, is there anybody that still doubts the persecutions directed against us are not political?

P.S. I am deeply moved and wish to thank you warmly for the stance taken by hundreds of thousands of Greeks who stand firmly at our side, ignoring the mud of the press that has been circulating. I would like to give my warmest regards to the thousands of nationalists who ignore this climate of terror and regardless of that keep the Golden Dawn officies across our nation jam packed.

Polls where it's incumbent on the respondent to vote are very unreliable, unfortunately.

There's been too much off-topic discussion in this thread lately. I think it would benefit the thread to have all the stuff not really about Golden Dawn, and instead about one guy who posts here and what's up with him or whatever, deleted. Wading through it is tiresome.

Good job, Leonard. That's what I wanted to do, but I have only used that vB function once, and it didn't work right, no doubt due to operator error.

This thread's for news and reasonable speculation about Golden Dawn and its enemies, that's what people need to know about.

Social conflicts intensifying in Greece
By Christoph Dreier
14 October 2013

Social conflicts are intensifying in Greece. The government has growing problems enforcing planned redundancies in the face of mounting working class resistance, and is increasingly resorting to authoritarian methods. The European Union (EU) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are once again demanding further spending and job cuts.

Eight universities have now been closed for five weeks after workers went on strike to oppose the dismissal of 1,349 administrative staff. Four of the eight university directors have refused to submit to the Education Ministry lists of employees with the information necessary to implement their sackings. The remaining four submitted lists of names without including any further details.

The Education Ministry responded aggressively to the directors’ action. It described Greek universities as “places of lawlessness, waste and mismanagement”—formulations that can be easily used to commence legal action against staff and the directors. On Thursday, the Ministry instructed university staff to forward the missing information directly to the authorities. In the event of continued refusal, they are threatened with immediate dismissal.

The union for the private sector, the GSEE, has called another 24-hour general strike for November 6. The strike is directed at plans to increase the country’s property tax. The tax applies in Greece to many workers who often have small apartments or houses.

Greek hospital workers are also opposing the dismissal of employees and the closure and merger of hospitals. Eight hospitals began strike action this week that will initially continue over the weekend. On Monday, the workers will decide at a general meeting on how to proceed further.

The Greek health system is already on the verge of collapse. Hospitals lack the most basic materials, and 40 percent of workers in Greece have no health insurance. Also, a new law comes into force on January 1 that requires the insured to pay €25 per treatment in the hospital.

The mass layoffs are part of the terms of the last loan agreement agreed on with the troika of the IMF, the European Commission and European Central Bank (ECB). According to the agreement, the government must transfer 25,000 workers into a so-called mobility reserve, where they will receive a portion of their salary for a few months before being finally sacked. The layoffs are part of a plan to shed a total of 150,000 jobs by the end of 2014.

The government has repeatedly delayed mass layoffs in the public sector because it feared the reaction of workers. It has cut wages and benefits, and increased taxes, but so far refrained from carrying out layoffs. Against a background of massive social cuts, the security of public service jobs, which is actually enshrined in the Constitution, was one of the last remaining social gains that ensured a degree of social stability.

Unemployment in Greece reached a new high in July of this year, standing at 27.6 percent. The rate amongst young workers under 25 is well over 60 percent. Under these circumstances, dismissed nurses, administrative staff and caretakers will find it impossible to find new work. After one year of unemployment, all forms of state support come to an end, including health insurance.

In the midst of this extremely tense situation, the troika is demanding even more cuts. Late last month, troika inspectors left their country and delivered the government an ultimatum: either the government carries out its planned redundancies and submits a budget for 2014—all by the end of October—or the next tranche of aid of over a billion euros will once again be held back.

The IMF has now indicated that Greece will need new emergency loans next year. According to its calculations, the state will experience a shortfall of at least €6.6 billion (US$8.9 billion) between 2014 and 2016 due to its poor economic development. Covering this deficit will require further cuts and loans. Moreover, given the country’s high level of debt, a “haircut” for the country’s creditors is also envisaged.

The head of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), Klaus Regling, believes that Greece will need a fresh loan in 2014. The current programme involving loans totalling €240 billion ends in the middle of next year. These loans flow almost exclusively into the coffers of creditor banks that receive high rates of interest for their deposits of government bonds, while the working class pays for the whole transaction in the form of further cuts and layoffs.

Greek prime minister Andonis Samaras (New Democracy, ND) and his vice minister, Evangelos Venizelos (PASOK), have so far ruled out “new measures” to balance the budget, but similar statements have not prevented cuts in the past. Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras has already stated that there could be more “structural reforms”—i.e., measures such as the reduction of workers’ rights, the extension of working hours, and tax breaks for the rich.

Such attacks are incompatible with democratic norms. To enforce its policies against workers, the ruling class has resorted with increasing frequency to dictatorial measures. Already this year, striking workers have been placed under martial law and forced to return to work on three separate occasions.

The imposition of martial law on subway drivers who organised a strike 10 months ago still remains in force. For almost a year, they have worked under the status of military conscripts. Unexcused absence can be punished with imprisonment of up to five years. When workers sought to discuss this measure at a staff meeting on Thursday, management obtained an interim injunction forbidding the meeting.

The most powerful expression of the authoritarian tendencies of the state apparatus is the systematic development of the fascist Golden Dawn party by the police and army. It was only after the assassination of the leftist hip-hop musician Pavlos Fyssas by Golden Dawn thugs and the eruption of mass protests threatening the authority of the state that the government decided to rein in the fascists and arrest some of its leading representatives.

Now, having been strengthened in the process, the state apparatus is proceeding against the social resistance of the working class. At the same time, the fascist cliques remain functional and continue to work closely with the security authorities.

The measures taken against Golden Dawn serve as a justification for the suppression of protests and demonstrations. In parliament, Prime Minister Samaras listed various social protests and called for their suppression. “A democratic party cannot make distinctions between good and bad violence, and I call on all parties to unconditionally defend the legal system”, he said.

On Thursday, Avgi, the party newspaper of SYRIZA, reported that following its measures against Golden Dawn, the government was planning to take measures against “social movements” and prosecute them as criminal organisations. At a certain point, the same measures could be used against SYRIZA itself. In addition there is evidence that, on behalf of the government, the Greek secret service is tapping the phones of the party and spying on leading members.

Despite these developments, SYRIZA actively supports the strengthening of the state apparatus in its alleged campaign against Golden Dawn. It has praised the police and army as anti-fascist and a force for democracy while at the same time calling upon the ruling conservative New Democracy to form a common front.

SYRIZA speaks on behalf of affluent sections of the middle class, and is itself closely linked to the state apparatus. The organisation fears an independent movement of the workers far more than the fascist gangs or their supporters in the police.

On Thursday, the ethics committee of the Greek parliament, in which all parties are represented, called for the lifting of immunity of 6 of the 18 Golden Dawn deputies. In addition, a draft law was discussed that withdraws state funding from parties whose representatives are accused. The funds are only to be reimbursed after a potential acquittal.

SYRIZA supported the bill in principle and merely proposed a few amendments to ensure that funding is withdrawn only if the party leader himself, or at least half of the leadership of the party, is convicted of forming a criminal organisation. Further debate on the law is scheduled for next Thursday.

[so the communists see SYRIZA as fake opposition, as controlled opposition, whereas they and their mostly imaginary workers' movement are the real opposition. they like seeing Golden Dawn busted, but they are afraid such measures, which they know are political rather than criminal, can be turned against themselves with equal ease]

[notice that System journalists formally facilitate a literal communist gathering]

For a European antifascist movement before it is too late...

Monday 14 October 2013, by Yorgos Mitralias

The launching press conference of the Greek Committee of the European Antifascist Initiative took place last Thursday 10 of October at the conference hall of the Greek Journalists’ Union. The panel included the journalist and documentarist Aris Hatzistefanou (Debtocracy, Catastroika), the professor of International Law George Katrougalos, the Secretary of Syriza’s Central Committee Dimitris Vitsas, the vice-president of Unicef-Hellas Sofia Tzitzikou, the Secretary of EEK (far-left) Savvas Michail, the MP of Syriza Dimitris Tsoukalas, the activist Yorgos Mitralias and the journalist Moisis Litsis.

Among personalities present in the hall and supporting the European Antifascist Manifesto we noticed many Syriza MPs like Sofia Sakorafa and antifascist resistance national hero Manolis Glezos, the ex-president of the Journalist’s Union D. Trimis, Unicef-Hellas president L. Kanellopoulos, the president of the Confederation of Professionals, Craftsmen & Merchants (GSEVEE), members of Syriza’s leadership, university professors, leading ecologists, the author of the book on Golden Dawn Dimitris Psarras and the president of the Association of Holocaust’s Victims Descendents Marios Soussis. Comrade Petros Konstantinou, leader of the antiracist and antifascist movement KERFAA, took also the floor exposing his point of view…

Messages of support had been sent by well-known people from the Greek cultural scene like the old surrealist poet Nanos Valaoritis or the composer Thanos Mikroutsikos. Messages of particular importance were sent by the Guinean victim of Golden Dawn’s storm squads Mamadou Ba who escaped recently to Brussels, as well as by the Slovenian Ivica Znidarsic, president of the “International Committee of Deportees and Refugees, Victims of Fascism and Nazism 1920-1945”.

The deepening and generalization of the crisis to nearly all European countries makes it now possible to apprehend not only the crisis’s dynamic and characteristics, but also the priority tasks which a left that does not surrender and keeps resisting ought to take on.

1. That is why we could henceforth evoke a trend towards the “greecization” of –at least- the European south, insofar as countries such as Spain, Italy or even France, one after the other, find themselves confronted with a political scene that has been deeply and drastically changed, just like what has been going on in Greece for the last 2-3 years. To various extents, but in a clearer and clearer fashion, the pillar of their political system, say their traditionally prevailing two-party system, has entered a profound crisis (France, Spain) or more, is collapsing (Greece, Italy) in favor of often unheard of until those days political forces, belonging to both ends of the political scene. In no time, their two main (left and right) neoliberal parties, which had been keeping the power in turns –altogether, they used to gather 70%, 80% or even more of the votes- , have now started to decline or even decompose. They are no longer granted more than 50%, 40% or even 30% of the citizens’ preferences.

2. Even though the classical right has suffered too, the consequences of the alienation of citizens mainly impacted the social-democracy. Social democratic parties are collapsing everywhere in Europe (Greece, Spain, Italy and France) and –a sign of the times- they’re no longer capable of taking profit of the natural wearing out of the right when it’s in power. They strongly decline even when they are in the opposition! [social democracy = greed and parasitism]

In fact, we are witnessing an unprecedented crisis of social democracy which bears all the characteristics of a… terminal one! The consequence is historic and cataclysmic: having lost one of its two legs, the two-party system, which used to ensure political stability and the smooth running of a system based on the changeover of political power between the neoliberal parties, hangs in suspense and has stopped functioning. Under these circumstances, the regime crisis is not far away.

3. We have to acknowledge that the European left is not in a state such as to embody the hopes of angry citizens who are deserting the parties that once used to prevail. Apart from Greece (Syriza), nowhere in Europe has the left got neither the credibility, nor the organized strength and social foothold, nor, above all, the capacity to inspire the masses that have been turning away from the main bourgeois parties while radicalizing their rejection of the established order.

The consequence of European’s left powerlessness in facing the generalized crisis of the bourgeois domination system cannot be summed up to the prediction that the left will not take advantage of this cataclysmic crisis of capitalism. Alas! There is much worse to it. What is already looming on the horizon is that this historic crisis, along with the left’s current powerlessness, could all too well lead to whole sections of a confused and disorientated society turning, in the end, to the far right or even neo fascist and neo Nazi forces in an attempt to express their anti system revolt!

4. Is this a mere working hypothesis? No, this is exactly what is happening in a continuously growing number of European countries. Now, it has nothing to do anymore with the “Greek exception” that has seen the hatching and stunning development of the neo Nazi Golden Dawn. Now it is about a real far right tidal wave, or at least of the reactionary euro skepticism (Germany, UK), even in North European countries so far relatively spared by the debt crisis and austerity policies!

Even more important than the quasi generalization of the phenomenon is the fact that the far right is now operating a historic breakthrough in such a great country as France, which has always marked our continent’s history. And even in countries where the far right remains marginalized (Italy, Spain, Belgium…), social crisis and political fragility are such that the situation might as well evolve in favor of the emergence of a far right force in no time, all the more taking into account the risk of contagion.

5. In fact, all the ingredients of an unprecedented since World War II political and social crisis are now put together in Europe so that we are getting closer and closer to the interwar period and its “devils”, even though the world has gone through tremendous changes since the 30’s…

However, similarities with the interwar period are not limited to the “objective” situation. Unfortunately, we see the “subjective factor”, the non social-democratic left, displaying the very same incapacity than the left in those days to understand what is going on in the deepest layers of society, and to react accordingly. The conclusion has to be categorical: it is not the rise of the far right –however impetuous it may be- that causes fear. What is frightening and determines today’s and tomorrow’s tasks is rather the incapacity or impossibility for the left not only to resolve the crisis to its own profit, but also to stand in the way of this rising reaction and far right!

6. Supposing that the diagnosis is right, what should we do, provided that, of course, we rule out any passive and fatalistic attitude and choose to fight before it’s too late? The answer seems obvious: we need to gather as quickly as possible all the available forces throughout Europe, Eastern, Western, Northern and South, in order to start a long term fight against the rising far right, including neo fascism and neo Nazism.

7. In order to make sense and above all to be able to bring tangible results, this European antifascist gathering must be altogether unitary and radical, massive and democratic. Any sectarian approach, dividing rather than uniting, reveals a deep misunderstanding or understating of the gravity of the situation, which requires the constitution of a unitary front gathering all those, without any exclusions, who are willing to fight the brown plague. The lessons of the interwar period, those of Italy of the 20’s and those of Germany of the 20’s and the 30’s are here to remind us that the shortest way to suicide for the workers’ and socialist movement goes through its own sectarianisms and splits in front of the rising racist, fascist and Nazi far right.

8. In order to be able to inspire the antifascists and meet the peoples’ expectations in these times of prolonged social war, this antifascist gathering has to be unitary as well as radical. Here we have not only to ascertain that the fights against the peoples’ starvers and the far right are organically linked, since the far right supports –in ultimate analysis- the system and its economic foundations. Here we have to take into account the revolt, however confused and partial, of the victims of austerity policies against the system which generates them and the politicians who implement them. For it is the moderation of a certain left, perceived –understandably- as a kind of “softness” and a refusal to put into acts the left’s fine words that makes the impoverished and desperate masses turn to fascists and other right extremists nearly everywhere in Europe…

9. This unitary and radical European antifascist gathering must imperatively be democratic as well, based on the citizens’ self organization. Why? Because only mobilized citizens can fight and beat the far right and because the indispensable condition for their mobilization is that they themselves determine their fights, their goals and their forms of action. In other words, they have to take over their fate.

10. But there is more than this. If we want to fight with some chance of success against the far right, we have to do so everywhere, constantly and above all globally, on every ground, without ignoring any battlefield. Because it is not only about confronting the storm troops, the militia and other racist and neo fascist gangs in the streets, but also facing the tremendous ravages caused in the minds and behaviors by the neoconservative counter revolution, the comeback of the worst racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, anti feminist and chauvinist reaction. And all this because the current rise of a mass far right does not fall out of the sky: it was prepared via the methodic poisoning of our societies by the selfish and anti-human “values” of the neo liberal, patriarchal and, finally, misanthropic and barbarous counter revolution.

11. In other words, nobody can claim to be antifascist as long as he is not in war against the pillars and the raison d’ętre of the far right, that is racism, homophobia, anti Semitism, chauvinism, sexism, as well as the worship of blind violence, machismo and intolerance. A political or other organization cannot practice a consistent form of anti fascism so long as it remains homophobic, jingoist, sexist, or even keeps making its militants goose-step parade.

So, who else than the directly concerned people – the citizens themselves- can give these everyday battles where they work, live, study, express themselves, build up relationships, love each other? The conclusion seems to be obvious: in order to be effective, anti fascism must not be the apparatuses’ business. It has to be the business of self-organized citizens wherever they exercise their activities as social beings. An antifascism that would not attack all the aspects of the ongoing reactionary counter revolution and would restrict itself to fighting only its epiphenomena would be already doomed to powerlessness.

12. However, be careful: given the extreme emergency of an already critical situation, the true dilemma is no more “to act or not to act” against the growing far right threat, but to decide and act quickly, as quickly as possible, for too much time has already been wasted in Greece –as well as in Hungary and elsewhere. Therefore, it’s time to stop warning us saying that we must not let the brown serpent get out of its egg. Unfortunately, this warning is no more useful because the serpent not only has already left its egg long ago but it has become a monster parading in the streets and sowing terror at least in many European countries!...

Consequently, let’s decide and act quickly! Being the result of an at least atypical initiative, the European Antifascist Manifesto* has the great merit of existing and forcing us to face our responsibilities. Time is no longer for the indecisiveness of the ones neither for the fatalism and the passivity of the others. It is not as well for the sectarianism of those who do not want to understand that only united we could be credible enough to inspire the antifascist will of the large citizens’ masses. Now, it is time for antifascist unity and action, it is time for building the European antifascist movement. Today! Tomorrow could be too late…
