Sahrawi Gandhi
Her real name is Aminatou Haidar (b. 1966). She is a prominent Western Saharan Human Right activist against Moroccan occupation since 1980s. She along with 700 other protesters, was arrested by Moroccan police in November 1987. She was held captive for the next four years in secret detention where along with 17 other Saharan women, she was tortured.
Aminatou Haidar has received several awards from western NGO groups and Amnesty International. In November 2009, returning home from the US, she was arrested by the Moroccan officials who siezed her Moroccan passport and deported her to an airport on Spain’s Canary Islands where she went on a hunger strike inside Lanzarote Airport in the Spanish controlled Canary Islands. On December 1, 2009 – Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! conducted an interviewed with Spanish actor Guillermo Toledo, who has been with Aminatou Haidar during her hunger strike. Despite her good cause of fighting for the rights of her people for self-determination – I could not stop smelling a rotten fish in the rhetoric the so-called “Human Right experts” intervied. For example, professor Stephen Zunes (University of San Francisco) compared the Western Sahara conflict with the East Timor, a Christian-majority Island with overwhelming Muslim-majority Indonesia, while both Morocco and the Western Sahara region are both predominently Muslims….. Read here and here. The other ‘expert’ supporter was Mouloud Said, Polisario Front representative in the US – who praised Obama for his ’stated’ committment to human rights (which naturally don’t include Palestinians, Iraqis, and Afghans). The idiot praised Washington’s policies against the racist regimes in South Africa, Indonesia, and Namibia – without mentioning Washington’s silence against similar crimes carried out by Israel, India or Russia against Muslims in those countries. Polisario Front (formed in 1973) is a communist group which carried out armed resistance against Spanish occupation of the Sahara. After Spain ended its colonization of the region, Polisario Front turned into a separatist group bent on creating a communist state in the Sahara. It’s supported by Algeria, Cuba, and some pro-Israel lobbying groups in the US. Spanish readers can find more stories about Aminatou Haidar here. SOURCE |
