EU elections may strengthen Putin in Europe

BRUSSELS - Far-right parties are set to do well in next month’s elections to the European Parliament, a fact that has thrown a spotlight on their links with the Kremlin.

A recent study by the Budapest-based Political Capital Institute documents the support that far-right parties in the EU have given to Russian President Vladimir Putin, particularly throughout the Ukraine crisis.

These parties repeated the Kremlin’s line that it is the EU and the West, rather than Russia, which are provoking tension and fuelling violence in the Eastern European country.

Several far-right politicians went to observe the Crimea referendum on re-joining Russia, a vote they said was free and fair although it was denounced as illegitimate by most Western leaders.

Among those that went were politicians from far-right or populist parties in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France and Hungary.

The EU-based parties – anti-European Union and favouring a strong nation state – see their world view reflected in the Kremlin. President Vladimir Putin has set his sights on restoring his country’s status as a world power, while weakening Euro-Atlantic ties.

"There is reason to believe that Russian diplomacy seeks to build party families in Europe," the study says.

It cites numerous examples of far-right parties participating in events attended by or organised by Russian policymakers.

A congress held by Italy’s Northern League in December last year, for example, was attended by Austrian, Flemish, Dutch and Swedish far-right leaders as well as Vikto Zubarev, an MP for United Russia, Putin’s party.

Hungary’s Jobbik and Greece’s Golden Dawn are both invited to the Russian National Forum organised by a group with close ties to Putin to be held later this year.

Admiration for Putin also extends to Europe’s softer right-wing. Nigel Farage, leader of the eurosceptic UK Independence Party, has openly backed Putin as a skillful "operator".

He recently said the Russian President was the current leader he most admired and said the EU had "blood on its hands” for making Ukraine choose between the European Union and Russia.

The support by the European parties – some of which are set to top the polls in the May EU vote – adds to an already muddled backdrop of the EU trying to form a unified response to Moscow’s actions in Ukraine.

It was only after much discussion that the EU finally agreed to blacklist some Russian officials and companies.

The rage at being shut out by the workers could not be contained by the Communists. In the KKE’s newspaper Rizospastis, an article titled “The Workers Are Becoming The Base Of Golden Dawn” said:

“The Communist party of Greece has confronted the administrators of the worker’s syndicates in ELFE and KAVALA Oil that they are to blame for appealing to Golden Dawn MP’s for parliamentary support. We urge the workers of ELFE and KAVALA Oil to stand in the fight for their rights. They should seek to isolate the fascist Golden Dawn. They should denounce all who agree to meet with the Nazis!!”

Unfortunately for the communists, the worker’s have always been nationalists. And now they have a voice.

Greek Judges Summon Four Golden Dawn MPs

A further four Golden Dawn MPs have been summoned by Greek judges Ioanna Klapa and Maria Dimitropoulou investigating criminal charges against the ultra-nationalist and neo-fascist party.

Eleni Zaroulia (the wife of party leader Nikos Michaloliakos, who is already in custody awaiting trial) as well as Michalis Arvanitis, Dimitris Koukoutsis and Nikos Kouzilos are to appear on May 5 before the Greek prosecutors to answer charges of setting up and participating in a criminal organization.

The Greek parliament has already voted to lift the four MPs’ immunity to prosecution, hence allowing Greek justice authorities to bring a criminal case against the parliamentary members, which could possibly lead to their imprisonment.

Of the party’s 16 MPs in the Greek parliament, 13 face charges of setting up a criminal organization, six of whom are already in pre-trial custody, including Michaloliakos.

Once Greek prosecutors lodge the appropriate request to Parliament, a plenary session will address lifting the immunity of the remaining three Golden Dawn MPs over the coming weeks.

Greece: 'They are stealing everything, even our homes'

“I wish I could leave Greece. I can’t go on living here. I work very long hours and live more frugally than ever, but I still can’t pay the bills, the income tax or the other taxes like the property poll tax.

“My tax debt keeps building up. I’ll end up losing my home. They are stealing our homes and they are not communists. And people are getting sadder and madder every day. I can’t go on like this.”

This was the response I got when I greeted a stall seller at an open-air market in my area. Due to my own extremely difficult working and commuting conditions, I hadn’t seen him in months. His anger and despair were much stronger than before, as is the case with most ordinary people in Greece.

My friend’s allusion to the communists concerns a decades-long anti-communist argument used by the power elites. The argument went that if the communists came to power, they would confiscate people’s homes. It was recently used by far-right health minister Adonis Georgiadis.

In fact, small real estate property is being confiscated under capitalism. People are losing their homes to banks for failing to meet mortgage payments, or to the taxation department for accumulated tax debts.

Home confiscations have been facilitated by a recent law enabling salary, pension, bank savings and property seizures for tax debts as low as 5000 euros. In practice, there have been seizures of all kinds of assets (including land and home) for smaller debts.

The number of confiscated homes has risen in recent years. A big wave of fresh house seizures is expected.

Financial hardship, combined with recent law changes, has led to a dramatic rise in debt-related jailings. Prison conditions are barbaric and unconstitutional.

Austerity

The vast majority of people are bound to have difficulty paying their mortgage or to run up a tax debt sooner or later. This is due to the extreme austerity measures imposed on Greece at the behest of the “troika” — the European Union, European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

People in Greece are suffering a high unemployment rate (officially well over 27%, the highest in Europe), huge income cuts, unfair and unpayable taxes and the sky-rocketting fees imposed on many middle-class professionals.

Since the first “memorandum” agreement signed with the troika in May 2010, real estate taxes have risen by 684%.

The situation was already pretty bad before the first memorandum. It has been getting even worse since the so-called “aid” from the troika and the required “structural adjustment” reforms it comes with.

Despite their stated aim, the loans given to Greece were intended to destroy rather than help the country’s economy. In May 2010, Greek public debt was 120% of GDP. Today, after four years of savage measures, it is 175% and growing.

Most of the bailout money is used to pay off previous loans and excessive loan interest. It is also handed to parasitic banks and insurance companies. On top of that, the people of Greece have paid 100 billion euros more than the loan given to their government.

In a cynical statement in January, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras confirmed that the people of Greece have suffered a drop in living standards greater than any other people has since the end of World War II.

The “structural adjustment” memorandum-dictated measures are leading to total pauperisation and helplessness, the complete destruction of the country’s economy, the theft of all its public and private property, and the abolition of social and worker rights.

Worse in store

Greek and foreign big capital are making huge profits, while the vast majority suffer. And there is worse in store.

Troika officials keep saying the country is not ready for profitable investment yet. There is continuous pressure for further salary cuts. The objective is the maximum plunder of Greece’s natural wealth and exploitation of the people.

Official papers and statements reveal plans to cut the minimum monthly wage to 200 euros and further increase “flexibility” in working conditions. Other plans include introducing individual pay for public servants based on performance assessment.

The powers-that-be have been blatantly violating our common sense, the law and the constitution — at odds with human, working and political rights.

Not surprisingly, my stall-seller friend is in good company. Hundreds of thousands have migrated from Greece in recent years and about 400,000 are considering it. The emigration rate is rising by almost 40% a year.

Emigration has played a big part in the country’s population decrease. It is the first time in modern Greece that a population decrease has been recorded. The drop in the birthrate, combined with a higher death rate, is another factor.

The situation is mind-boggling, with the attacks so relentless and all-encompassing they cannot be easily described. All areas of life are affected, from financial affairs to cultural, relationship and psychological issues.

The loosely estimated 40% cuts to salaries and pensions are compounded by rising prices and unreasonable taxation measures, sackings in the private and public sectors, unemployment and underemployment.

Working conditions have deteriorated immensely, facilitated by newly-introduced legislation. Also, many employers get away with further violation of workers’ rights. About 50% of workers have been not been paid for up to 18 months.

Schools, hospitals and welfare services have shrunk or closed down. Thousands of businesses fold up every month. Homelessness, crime, prostitution and psychological and health problems are rising rapidly.

Prisons have filled well beyond capacity. The conditions are inhumane, as are the conditions in the recently-created migrant concentration camps.

Hundreds of thousands of households have had their electricity cut for unpaid bills. This, together with the high cost of other conventional heating methods, has led to fatal accidents caused by makeshift heaters.

The rising death rate is due to greater illness levels, combined with the shocking state of the national health-care system and people’s inability to pay for medication. Growing numbers of suicides add to the death figures. Greece is leading the world in its rising rate of suicides.

Privatisation and authoritarianism

While people are deprived of indispensable services, such services are being privatised. Electricity, water, ports, the national broadcasting service, public clinics and vocational secondary education are only a few examples.

Opening up professional fields is another method of transferring material and human resources to big corporations. Deregulation has been viciously pursued by the government in businesses such as pharmacies, taxis and trucks. Workers from different professional categories are isolated in their struggles.

Similar moves include facilitating milk imports at the expense of local producers and the enforcement of extended opening hours, which will wipe out small shops.

Shops are closing by the thousands. The only exception are pawnbrokers’ shops, which have mushroomed — another way of stealing people’s wealth.

The whole country is up for grabs by privateers. Whole areas are sold out for exploitation, such as the mines in Skouries, Thrace and Kilkis.

The creation of Special Economic Zones and Free Zones to ensure high corporate profits of “investors” through slavery-type worker conditions and overall unaccountability is also well underway.

These measures are accompanied by heightened authoritarianism. The erosion of democratic rights and police repression are reminiscent of totalitarian regimes.

Violence has permeated society as a whole. Neo-Nazi Golden Dawn has been used by corporate interests to set the pace.

Police brutality mainly targets those resisting the government’s policies. The struggles have been ongoing but are mostly short-lived, fragmented and isolated. Much more planning, social solidarity and coordination are needed for victorious outcomes.

Some gains

There have been some victories, such as the judicial win by sacked school guards, or the government’s withdrawal of a planned 25-euro hospital admission fee.

On the one hand, such victories can boost people’s confidence. However, the gains do not last long, with the government always finding ways to realise its plans.

A positive development is that the balance of forces in some trade unions has shifted to the left. Furthermore, the left is making conscious efforts to set up new union groups and counter sold-out top-tier leaderships.

With the upcoming combined Greek local and European Parliament election on May 25, a lot of hope is invested in an electoral victory of the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA). SYRIZA representatives express a belief it will win the highest vote of any Greek political force in these polls, which will instigate national general elections.

But the system has so many means of manipulating voting choices that a SYRIZA win is not certain. For one thing, new capitalist parties have formed and are greatly promoted by the media to diffuse the vote.

As part of the effort to fool the electorate, the Greek government is also keeping secret its new agreement with the troika, which SYRIZA has revealed.

Even if SYRIZA won government, a strong popular movement would be necessary to back the government. SYRIZA must step up its efforts to stand by the grassroots movement, increasing political consciousness and rallying support.

It is no accident that the establishment is trying hard to tame SYRIZA, cutting it off from the people’s struggle.

Recent anti-communist statements by government officials indicate some of what these people are capable of in defence of vested interests, so the left should do everything in its power to be prepared for fresh attacks.

Presenting the results of a study on worldwide anti-Semitism in 2013 by the eponymous Kantor Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry at Tel Aviv University, Kantor cited increasing rising anti-Semitism and decreased “fear and insecurity” as factors leading to a European Jewish decline.

Citing a November study by the European Union’s Agency for Fundamental Rights that showed that almost a third of Jews in several European countries are mulling emigration, Kantor asserted that “Jews do not feel safe or secure in certain communities in Europe.”

“According to that survey, almost half of the Jewish population is afraid of being verbally or physically attacked in a public place because they are Jewish and 25 percent of Jews will not wear anything that identifies them as Jewish or go near a Jewish institution for fear of an attack,” he said. “European governments must be pressed to address this issue with utmost urgency.”

A third of Jews polled in the FRA study refrained from wearing religious garb or Jewish symbols out of fear, and 23% avoided attending Jewish events or going to Jewish venues.

While 66% reported anti-Semitism as having a negative affect on their lives, 77% did not bother reporting abuse or harassment.

Almost a third were mulling emigration as a response to heightened anti-Jewish sentiment.

The countries facing the worst anti-Semitism are Hungary, France, Belgium and Sweden, the ministry said, quoting the FRA study.

The FRA came under fire from Jewish organizations as well as Israel for dropping a working definition of anti-Semitism from its website last year.

Kantor said that he believes that it is easy to ignore hate and incitement when there are no “direct victims” but that such manifestations of anti-Semitism can easily be converted into action.

“We received a stark lesson two weeks ago in Kansas City that there are many dangerous anti-Semites out there who just need the trigger and the opportunity to transfer their hate speech into violent action,” Kantor said, referring to a recent shooting at a Jewish Community Center in the United States.

Three people, none of them Jews, were killed in that attack, which was perpetrated by a former Klansman and white supremacist.

Kantor is not the only prominent Jewish figure to project a pessimistic future for European Jewry.

Speaking to The Jerusalem Post after the far-right Jobbik party won a fifth of the parliamentary seats in Hungarian elections earlier this month, the Hebrew University’s Robert Wistrich, considered one of the foremost experts on anti-Semitism worldwide, cautioned that Jewish life in much of Europe will eventually become untenable.

“The Jews in Europe do not have a future... I think that their future is bleak,” he prognosticated.

Extrapolating from the success of far-right parties such as Jobbik, Svoboda in Ukraine, the National Front in France, and Golden Dawn in Greece, Wistrich said he believes that the nationalist Right would make significant gains in upcoming elections for the European Parliament.

Anti-Defamation League national chairman has also expressed worries over the rise of the European far-right, cautioning that it will achieve remarkable electoral successes when Europeans go to the polls in May.

“They’re going to try to maximize their political impact,” Foxman told the Post in January.

“I think we need to be very aware and vigilant to what [kind] of a power base they establish pan-Europe.”

Foxman also critiqued the European Union over its response to the rise in anti-Semitism.

“There is no serious monitoring by continental entities,” Foxman said.

In January the Jerusalem and Diaspora Affairs Ministry issued a report describing a “bleak atmosphere” for Jews in Europe.

The World Jewish Congress has also weighed in on the issue of anti-Semitism, with the international body calling for a Europe-wide ban on neo-Nazi political parties during its plenary assembly in Budapest last May.

Towards the end of 2013 the Greek government instituted a sweeping crackdown on the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party, following the murder of a popular liberal rapper by a party sympathizer.

Other European countries declined to follow suit.

According to the Anti-Semitism Worldwide 2013 survey distributed by the Kantor Center in conjunction with the University’s Moshe Kantor Database for the Study of Contemporary anti-Semitism and Racism and the EJC, anti-Semitism has begun to “infiltrate into the mainstream from the extreme Left and Right fringes.”

The perceived source of anti-Semitism differs on a country by country basis, the report noted.

Eighty percent of Hungarian Jews look at the far-right as the “main source of threat,” while 60% of Italians “pointed to the Left.”

Almost three quarters of French Jews and 60% in Belgium citied their respective countries’ large Muslim immigrant communities.

Traditional Christian religious anti-Semitism was the least cited of all the various forms of anti-Jewish sentiment.

Anti-Semitic violence declined in 2013 but overall anti-Semitism is on the rise, according to the Kantor Center.

This analysis, the report said, is based on the “growing intensity of and increase in visual and verbal expressions, insults, abusive language and behavior, threats and harassments, and not necessarily on an increase in the number of violent incidents – although in some countries manifestations of violent anti-Semitic [sentiments] are on the rise, or have become more extreme.”

Moreover, the authors contend, it is likely that given the reluctance of many to report being assaulted, “the situation is worse than the situation reported by monitoring agencies and communities.”

Seventy seven percent of Jews polled by the FRA have said that they do not report anti-Semitic harassment.

Over the past year, 554 “registered violent anti-Semitic acts” were recorded, including assaults with and without weapons as well as arson, vandalism and direct threats against Jewish institutions and property.

While this marks a drop from the 686 incidents recorded the previous year, a 19% drop, the lower level of attacks is still close to the annual average for the past decade, which is “quite high compared to the preceding decade’s” rate of between 150 and 200 annual incidents.

“In other words, the drop in 2013 was compared to an exceptional year in which incidents spiked,” the authors hedged. “It should also be noted that the number of direct attacks against persons are steadily increasing, mostly committed randomly with bare hands or a near-athand instrument.”

France experienced the highest level of anti-Semitic incidents, with 116, down from 200 in 2012, a sevenfold increase over the past 13 years.

Violence rose in the United Kingdom (95 vs. 84 in 2012), Canada (83 vs. 74), Germany (36 vs. 23 ), the Ukraine (23 vs.

15 in 2012), Russia (15 v. 11) and Hungary (14 vs. 12).

Poland and Italy experienced declines in reported incidents.

The Center’s figures must be understood in context, the report asserted, saying that Jews are disproportionately represented among the victims of hate crimes, despite constituting only a minute percentage of the populations of the countries in which they reside.

Among the issues facing European Jewry over the past year have been campaigns to ban circumcision, bans on ritual slaughter in several countries, the spread of the sieg heil (the Nazi salute) like the quenelle salute and the use of anti-Semitism as a political weapon in the conflict between Russian and Ukraine.

Poland banned ritual slaughter in January 2013, and a year later Denmark did too. However, in early 2014 Poland legalized the practice for purely internal communal consumption – not for export.

Last October the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe recommended that countries reassess the legality of circumcision, which it termed a “violation of the physical integrity of children.”

The Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers subsequently repudiated the PACE resolution in 2014.

“The circumcision issue could be understood as a veiled attempt to force Jews to leave Europe, since while one can import kosher meat, but Jews cannot forgo traditional circumcision,” the Kantor Center posited.

Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt of the Conference of European Rabbis said in response to the report: “Besides anti-Semitic attacks, European Jews are being challenged and made [to] feel unwelcome by infringements on freedom of their faith in many countries of Europe, which for almost a millennia welcomed Jews and their religion.”

The quenelle, a quasi-Nazi salute invented by popular French comedian Dieudonne M’bala M’bala “has become a popular avenue for expressing negative feelings towards Jews,” the Kantor Center noted.

“The gesture has been adopted by people from various circles – mostly youngsters who probably are not affiliated with identifiable organizations, who perform and record the gesture – most often in close proximity to Jewish sites such as synagogues, cemeteries, street signs in Jewish quarters and especially near commemoration sites and Holocaust monuments (the most bold faced, standing in front of the infamous entrance gate to Auschwitz),” it said.

In the current conflict between Russia and the Ukraine, both sides have been quick to accuse the other of fomenting anti-Semitism and communal leaders in the Ukraine have accused Russia of instigating a series of anti-Semitic incidents in order to justify its annexation of Crimea.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that he feels obligated to protect ethnic Russians, Jews and other minorities in the Ukraine.

“Both sides are using anti-Semitism” to tarnish the other, the Kantor Center’s Irena Cantorovich said at the press conference Sunday morning.

“We can’t say who is behind these incidents.”

The rise in anti-Semitism cannot be directly correlated with events in the Middle East, indicating that “what we witnessed in 2013 is ‘not anti-Semitism’ per se,” the report stated.

It further asserted that “the anti-Zionism that permeates leftist circles as part of a fixed worldview of individuals and groups as a cultural code that enables those propagating it to deny that their views reflect anti-Semitic overtones.”

It defined such attitudes as “Anti-Semitism Denial,” a phenomenon “parallel” to Holocaust denial.

European Jewry is facing anti-Semitism on the one hand and assimilation on the other, eroding the community from two sides.

“Despite what people might think, anti-Semitism does not strengthen our ties with Jews overseas,” Diaspora Affairs Minister Naftali Bennett said earlier this year. “For every Jew who makes aliya as a result of anti-Semitism, there are many others who cut ties with Judaism and the Jewish way of life.”

In 2010 the Knesset’s Information and Research Center reported an intermarriage rate over 35% in France and England and over 65% in several Eastern European nations.

In reaction to Kantor’s statement, several Jewish groups told the Post that they agreed with him but hoped that the situation could be salvaged.

Jane Braden-Golay, president of the European Union of Jeiwsh Students, told the Post that she agreed that “normative Jewish life in Europe won’t be sustainable if so many Jews continue to live in fear and insecurity.”

“Confronted with hate speech online, extremist rhetoric in political arenas and BDS campaigns on campuses, there is a risk that young Jews may begin to view their Jewish identities as a burden,” she said.

However, she continued, it may be possible to strengthen the younger generation of European Jews and “ultimately turn around these developments.”

One common refrain from Jewish groups was the need to impel European governments to take decisive action.

“We believe that there is a need for improvement in the matter of anti-Semitism that has to come from European Governments and through education,” Rabbi Menachem Margolin of the European Jewish Association said.

Efraim Zuroff of the Simon Wiesenthal Center said that “a lot depends on the degree of political power wielded by the local anti-Semitic parties.”
