US says Russia striking CIA-backed militants in Syria
HomeUSForeign Policy Tue Oct 6, 2015 9:34AM

Quote:
A new US intelligence assessment says Russia has been targeting militant groups backed by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Syria, deepening US anger at Moscow.

The assessment, shared by commanders on the ground, has led American officials to conclude that Russian warplanes have intentionally struck CIA-backed militants in a string of attacks running for days, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Obama administration officials are debating how the United States can come to the aid of its proxy forces on the ground without risking a broader conflict, according to the Journal.

US officials said Russia’s moves in Syria posed a direct challenge to President Barack Obama’s Syria policy.

“On day one, you can say it was a one-time mistake,” a senior US official said of a Russian strike on a militant headquarters. “But on day three and day four, there’s no question it’s intentional. They know what they’re hitting.”

Russia Says ‘Volunteers’ Likely to Fight in Syria
Russia Not Planning Formal Ground Operations

by Jason Ditz, October 05, 2015

Russian military official Admiral Vladimir Komoyedov reiterated today that there are no plans for Russian ground troops to get directly involved in the Syrian Civil War, but said it was very likely that Russian “volunteers” will start showing up in the ranks of the Syrian Army.

Komoyedov predicted that a “unit of Russian volunteers, conflict veterans, will probably appear in the ranks of the Syrian Army” soon, saying that such fighters would be drawn to the conflict by the money to be made in such a fight.

Though mercenary fighting is technically illegal in Russia, the law on that is seldom enforced, and the admiral conceded that the emergence of such volunteer forces in Syria “cannot be stopped.” Veterans of the Russian military were a common sight during the Ukraine Civil War as well.

Though such “volunteer” groups inevitably raise speculation that they are operating under Russian government control, the reality may be much more subtle, that Russia is simply more willing to overlook mercenary work when it is carried out for factions with whom the Russian Federation is allied.

Such fighters could be welcomed by the Syrian government, which is struggling to keep its military numbers up after years of war, and while Syria has had no shortage of Shi’ite volunteer militias from Iraq and Iran, they have tended to be untrained and have struggled to fight combat-hardened rebel forces.

4 Russian warships launch 26 missiles against ISIS from Caspian Sea
Published time: 7 Oct, 2015 11:15
Edited time: 7 Oct, 2015 13:45

Quote:
Four Russian Navy warships have fired a total of 26 missiles at the position of the terrorist group Islamic State in Syria, Russia’s Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu announced. The missiles were fired from the Caspian Sea.

“Four missile ships launched 26 cruise missiles at 11 targets. According to objective control data, all the targets were destroyed. No civilian objects sustained damage,” Shoigu said.

The missiles flew some 1,500 km before reaching their targets, probing their efficiency.

The missile attacks came from Russia’s fleet in the Caspian Sea, which borders Russia, Iran and three other littoral countries. The precision weapons hit all intended targets. The attacks required cooperation from Iran and Iraq, as the missiles had to travel through their airspace to reach Syria.

The Russian Defense Ministry said it had worked with its partners to plan the flight path so that the missiles traveled only over desolate areas and didn’t pose any danger to civilians.

I find this missile attack absolutely invigorating. Russia isn't fooling around, and Iran/Iraq don't mind helping out one bit. With the leaflet drops pointing out exactly who is behind ISIS this is shaping up to be more than a black eye for the USSA/Isntreal. It's more a bloody massacre.

71 armored vehicles
30 other vehicles

That's pretty cool, I didn't know the Russian navy operated DDG (Guided-missile destroyer)-sized warships in the Caspian Sea, I thought just little patrol boats. At first I couldn't figure how they got them there, then realized--duh--the Volga River empties into the Caspian Sea.

What's particularly satisfying about this is the JewSA and Izzrahell can only sit back impotently and watch. And NATO ships certainly can't get into the Caspian to harass the Russians, either.

RUSSIA is testing a terrifying new weapon that can blind enemies using rays as it steps up the fight to obliterate the Islamic State in Syria.

The country's defence vehicles could soon be equipped with the device, which fires out light strong enough to block sensors and cloak human vision.

It will provide cover for troops by dazzling enemies and sabotaging hostile reconnaissance attempts.

The "visual optical jammer" named Grach has four projectors and can be remotely controlled by crews.

The device was revealed at a military expo in Russia this week and the Navy are due to start testing a prototype later this month.

It will be used on hovercrafts, amphibious vehicles and hydrofoils but developers hope it will target terrorists or pirates in future.

Deputy director of device creator OPK Sergey Skokov said: "It can save lives and hardware and causes a strong psychological effect on the enemy,

"Not only foreign navies, but also border guards and law enforcement agencies fighting against piracy on the seas may find it useful."

Reports of Russian missiles falling in Iran lies, part of psychological war - Iranian general
Published time: 9 Oct, 2015 10:28

Western media reports of Russian missiles hitting Iran are “blatant lies” and part of a campaign of psychological warfare, a top Iranian military commander said. CNN claimed four Russian cruise missiles fell in Iran instead of continuing toward Syria.

“We have no reports of any Russian missiles crashing in Iran,” Gen. Musa Kamali told Russian news agency Sputnik. “All those media reports alleging that Russian missiles aiming at Syria hit Iran are blatant lies.”

“If the people making those claims had any proof, they would have certainly presented it,” he said. “The US made similar allegations in the past as part of their psychological warfare against whoever opposes their policies in the region.”

The reports by CNN and the Reuters, Bloomberg and AFP news agencies cited anonymous American sources as saying that four of the two dozen cruise missiles that Russia’s Caspian fleet fired at terrorist targets in Syria didn’t make it to their targets. They claimed that they fell in Iran and caused some damage and possibly even casualties on the ground.

Russia denied the reports, reiterating that all the missiles successfully hit targets in Syria. The Russian military said that the missiles didn’t pose any threat to Iran and Iraq, which they passed on their 1,500-kilometer route to Syria.

Obama administration ends $500mn program to train Syrian rebels – report
Published time: 9 Oct, 2015 11:56
Edited time: 9 Oct, 2015 12:03

The Obama administration has ended the Defense Department's $500 million program to train and equip Syrian rebels, The New York Times reported on Friday, citing officials. This comes as an acknowledgment of the program's failure to produce ground forces capable of battling ISIS.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a Pentagon official said the recruitment of so-called moderate Syrian rebels to go through training programs in Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates will end.

He added that a much smaller training center will be opened in Turkey, where a small number of “enablers” – mostly leaders of opposition groups – will be taught operational maneuvers, such as how to call in airstrikes.

Defense Department officials are expected to officially announce the end of the training program later on Friday.

A top US General told Congress in September that only “four or five” US-trained rebels were still fighting on the ground, with Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ga.) calling the program a “total failure.”

France Protects al-Qaeda Affiliates, Should Help Russia Instead - Le Pen

Quote:
Instead of helping Russia to crash Islamic militants in Syria, France is doing the opposite – helping al-Qaeda-linked terrorists, said Marine Le Pen, the leader of French National Front party.

Le Pen criticized the French government, stating that it sides with the duplicitous policies of the United States. One can't trust Washington's policies anymore, Le Pen said on her Twitter account.

While Russia is fighting ISIL, trying to solve the Syrian crisis, France is "protecting" al-Nusra fighters, who represent the al-Qaeda terrorist organization in Syria, the French politician argued.

Instead of doing this senseless job, France should have been fighting ISIL alongside Russia in the Middle East, Le Pen said.

[did the US bomb the desert or something? The Russians seems to have accomplished a lot in a very short period of time, compared to the phony(?) bombings of the United States.]

Russian airstrikes kill 2 ISIS commanders, 300 militants – Defense Ministry
Published time: 9 Oct, 2015 13:42
Edited time: 9 Oct, 2015 14:43

Russian air forces carried out 67 sorties, striking 60 separate targets in northern Syria in the past 24 hours, the Defense Ministry has reported. Two senior Islamic State field commanders are reportedly among some 300 militants killed in the strikes.

“Among the targets are the communication hubs, command posts, fuel stores and terrorist training bases located located in Raqqa, Latakia, Idlip, Aleppo and Hama,” said deputy chief of staff Lieutenant-General Igor Makushev, in a Moscow media briefing.

Makushev said that drone footage verified that a precision hit destroyed the headquarters of Liwa-al-Haqq, an Islamist group, which has been fighting the government of Bashar Assad since 2012. Russia said that a radio intercept confirmed the deaths of 200 fighters, and two commanders, who Makushev said belonged to Islamic State.

Another 100 Islamists were killed in an airstrike near Aleppo, in which Russian Sukhoi jets destroyed a base and armaments store housed in a former prison.

In total the airstrikes destroyed six communication hubs, six armories, 17 training bases and 17 armored vehicles, the Russian official said.

“The militants are sustaining significant losses from the airstrikes, and are having to adjust their tactics, spreading out over a wider area, concealing themselves more thoroughly, or hiding in urban settlements,” Makushev said.

“In these conditions, the Russian air forces are continuing and intensifying their airstrikes.”

Russian air forces have carried out airstrikes from a specially-built base outside the government-controlled stronghold of Latakia since September 30, at the behest of Bashar Assad. About 2,000 Russian personnel have been deployed in the country, but Moscow says it has no plans to use ground forces in the fight against militants.

WikiLeaks Reveals How the US Aggressively Pursued Regime Change in Syria, Igniting a Bloodbath

Friday, 09 October 2015 00:00
By Robert Naiman, Verso Books | Book Excerpt

Quote:
The following is Chapter 10 of The WikiLeaks Files:

On August 31, 2013, US president Barack Obama announced that he intended to launch a military attack on Syria in response to a chemical weapons attack in that country that the US blamed on the Syrian government. Obama assured the US public that this would be a limited action solely intended to punish the Assad government for using chemical weapons; the goal of US military action would not be to overthrow the Assad government, nor to change the balance of forces in Syria's sectarian civil war.

History shows that public understanding of US foreign policy depends crucially on assessing the motivations of US officials. It is likely inevitable as a result that US officials will present themselves to the public as having more noble motivations than they share with each other in private, and therefore that if members of the public had access to the motivations shared in private, they might make different assessments of US policy. This is a key reason why WikiLeaks' publishing of US diplomatic cables was so important.

At least four Russian cruise missiles fired at Syria from a Russian ship in the Caspian Sea crashed in Iran, US officials have claimed.

A US government source said Russia had been flying cruise missiles over Iran into Syria in attacks on rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

But reports have emerged today that some of them had crash landed before reaching their targets.

It is not yet clear whether there were any casualties and Russia has since denied the claims.

Default NEO-US and NATO Launch Disinfo Terror War

Quote:
It has been quite a show watching panic set in at the Pentagon, White House and NATO, as the modest Russian air campaign began tearing up the terrorist infrastructure in northern Syria. Forty percent is claimed to have been destroyed the first week in preparation for a Syrian ground offensive, which has now started.

As Russia has fully complied with all international legalities, which the Western coalition has ignored, it left the West and Israel with only more lies and deceptions to protect its terror brigades inside of Syria.

Syria conflict: Assad forces make 'significant gains'

Quote:
Syrian forces backed by Hezbollah militants from Lebanon are said to have made significant advances against rebels after heavy Russian air strikes.

Government gains are being reported in Idlib, Hama and Latakia provinces.

Russia says its aircraft carried out more than 60 missions over Syria in the past 24 hours, and that the Islamic State group was its main target.

But the Russian strikes appear to have impacted heavily on rebels fighting both the government and IS.
Syria conflict: Assad forces make 'significant gains' - BBC News

Quote:
The missiles have been so successful on the battlefield that the rebels have taken to calling it the “Assad Tamer.”

The program has been going on for several years, and during the recent Russian-backed offensive by Syrian forces, rebels have been posting videos of the missiles taking out Syrian tanks and armored vehicles.

While a significant capability, the Raytheon-made missiles -- coming mostly from the 13,000 purchased by the Saudi government in 2013 -- have so far been unable to significantly change the situation on the ground, as Syrian forces

continue to push rebels out of their positions in Idlib, Hama, and Latakia provinces.
