Thumbs down Were Confederate soldiers terrorists?

Were Confederate soldiers terrorists?

Editor's note: Roland S. Martin, a CNN political analyst, is a nationally syndicated columnist and author of "Listening to the Spirit Within: 50 Perspectives on Faith," and the new book, "The First: President Barack Obama's Road to the White House." He is a commentator for TV One Cable Network and host of a Sunday morning news show.

(CNN) -- Based on the hundreds of e-mails, Facebook comments and Tweets I've read in response to my denunciation of Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell's decision to honor Confederates for their involvement in the Civil War -- which was based on the desire to continue slavery -- the one consistent thing that supporters of the proclamation offer up as a defense is that these individuals were fighting for what they believed in and defending their homeland.

In criticizing me for saying that celebrating the Confederates was akin to honoring Nazi soldiers for killing of Jews during the Holocaust, Rob Wagner said, "I am simply defending the honor and dignity of men who were given no choice other than to fight, some as young as thirteen."

Sherry Callahan said that supporting the Confederacy is "our history. Not hate; it's about heritage and history."

Javier Ramirez called slavery evil, but prefaced his remarks by saying that "Confederate soldiers were never seen as terrorists by [President Abraham] Lincoln or U.S. generals on the battlefield. They were accorded POW status, they were never tried for war crimes. Not once did Confederate soldiers do any damage to civilians or their property in their invasion of the north. The same is not true of Union soldiers."

Realskirkland sent me a Tweet saying, "Slavery is appalling, but was not the only reason for the CW [Civil War]. Those men, while misguided on some fronts stood up for what they felt was right. They embodied that American ideal that the states have a right to govern themselves. THAT is what a confederate soldier stood for."

If you take all of these comments, don't they sound eerily similar to what we hear today from Muslim extremists who have pledged their lives to defend the honor of Allah and to defeat the infidels in the West?

Nigger Martin and his sad race are the true terrorists. White children in city schools who make up small percentages are terrorized daily. White elderly trapped in urban areas gone nigger live in constant fear, etc, etc. etc.

Confederates (Southerners) were great at suppressing nigger terrorism, if they got out of line justice was quick. It's because that mindset is gone that niggers rape, murder and gang attack Whites at record levels.

Well said, Ron. These yellow "southerners" who beg and say "heritage not hate" and other defensive pleadings, are an insult to the south and to the bravery and sacrifices of the confederates who fought.

We'll never gain anything by begging except contempt or laughter. We 70 million southerners oughta boycott the GD IRS until the feds pass a national holiday to honor the Confederacy, as well as a White Southern History Month.

Actually the otherside waged a war of terror on civilians from Atlanta to the Sea. General Sherman really practiced the concept of "total war". According to a recent article in Civil War Times (Dec 09, I think) he is painted as a White supremacist. Another Army General complained that Sherman was dragging his feet in enlisting blacks and that they could stop a bullet just as well as a White soldier could. Sherman's rather dry reply was that actually a sandbag was of more use to him for stopping bullets than blacks were.

Sherman is an odd case: on one hand, I despise what he did in Georgia & South Carolina; on the other, I want to like him because he was clearly a racist who lived in and admired the South before the war. Someone wrote that since he was sent to be raised by friends of his mother when he was a kid, Sherman had a fear of chaos, so he saw Southern secession as chaos on a national scale.

Who knows. One thing is certain: he had the utter ruthlessness essential for winners. We sure as shit could use him now.....

As did your namesake, N.B.
I have a feeling things would have turned out much differently had he ever been appointed C-in-C of the ANV.

How disgusting!

Sherman was the Omar Bradley of his day. Or the Patton, if you prefer. Never, ever, for an instant, giving a a grown White man's thought to what they were doing. "Bey'in orders, sire."

Scum of the earth, the lot. Hate to include Patton in that, but he was a slow learner.

Ya know, I listen to the idiots at the LOS talk about how Southern secession was because of taxes. And of course one never hears an end to the Jews' version, that it was about freeing the poor black Slaves. Well, you know what? 'Twasn't about either. "Twas because of the election of the Barak Obamination of his day, Abraham Lincoln.

Even Rabbi Abraham made noise about his White separatism, AT ELECTION TIMES. But his actions were different than his words.

General Sherman's army killed my family. And what for? For God, Country, and for the Jews who've run this God-forsaken continent since AT LEAST 1776.

This country deserves everything it's getting.

I'm with you ohgolly, a hand full of racialist statements made by anybody in the North or South in the 1860's wouldn't raise an eyebrow. But their actions have spoken volumes for generations and the poison fruits of the labor haunt us still.

No offense to any posters in this thread all are top notch to me.
