Protesters Shout Down Neo-Nazi Group Rally In Tyler

The shouts of protesters and members of Neo-Nazi group the National Socialist Movement (NSM) canceled each other out during a two-hour anti-immigration rally held in downtown Tyler.


The NSM rally, which was timed to coincide with a similar rally in Missouri, drew around 10 members of the NSM and more than 100 protesters closing Spring Avenue from Ferguson to East Erwin Streets.

Police gave several verbal warnings to protesters who leaned too far into the police tape or who shouted obscenities, but there were no arrests.


“We were pleased that it was peaceful and that no violence broke out,” Tyler Police Department Public Information officer Don Martin said.

Outfitted in black pants button up shirts and high laced boots, members of the NSM stood on the back steps of the Smith County Courthouse shouting their message from a megaphone.


Protesters came from as far away as Austin, many affiliated with Anti-Racist Action (ARA) movement.

The voices of NSM members were drowned out by peace protesters chanting “die Nazi scum,” rattling tambourines and beating drums.


“We fight for our race we fight for our nation. We are not un-American you are un-American. You are the problem,” Sgt. Jeffcoat unit leader of the Southwest Texas NSM shouted back.

On the sidelines were dozens of law enforcement officers patiently observing the yelling match.

“Between all of the agencies, we’re well prepared,” Martin said adding that they did not want to have an obvious police presence but wanted to be there in case fights broke out.

Randy Oliver of Tyler who came to watch the rally said that he was disappointed that the NSM chose Tyler as a place for their rally.

“I know it’s freedom of speech, but you can see that no one wants them to be here,” he said. “Maybe they will see that and not come back.”

JEFFERSON CITY | Just over 50 neo-Nazis chanted anti-immigrant and anti-minority slogans during a two-hour march in Jefferson City, finishing at the state Capitol.

Spectators lined sidewalks along part of the route today, but there was no violence. At least two counter-protesters were handcuffed. But it's unclear if there were more arrests and a police spokesman did not immediately return a call.

A tense moment occurred as the neo-Nazis, protected by police in riot gear, marched back to their vehicles while exchanging taunts with demonstrators.

The neo-Nazis delivered a series of speeches for just over an hour from the Capitol's steps.

Most focused on condemning politicians, the federal economic bailout, Jews and minorities. Although newly elected President Barack Obama was mentioned, most of the speakers said Republican John McCain was no better.

During the early 1990s, I helped organize a yearly protest rally held at the statehouse in Columbus, Ohio, every January in opposition to the Martin Luther King holiday.

The local media invariably down-played the number of participants every year, and it always amused us.

One year a reporter from the Columbus Dispatch newspaper wanted to do an "inside story" on the rally. She was "future anchor" cute & we had nothing to hide, so what the hell, right?

She rode with us to the staging area in the statehouse basement.

I had everyone line up single-file just before we made walked up the stairs out on to the courthouse steps.

"How many people do you count?" I asked her.

I watched her blow-dried news-babe head slightly bob up and down as she used that big college brain to count from the front of the line to the back.

"63".

"64 including me, right?"

"Right."

" I count 64 as well. So now you know the exact number of people here today. We'll see how honest your reporting is."

She assured me that she was "there to report the facts", and was grateful for the access we had given her.

Her story in the next morning's paper started out with "Yesterday, about three dozen..."

I made a couple of calls to the paper trying to reach her and ask why the obvious inaccuracy in her story, but never got a return call.

I've often wondered if it was her or her editor who knowingly printed a lie.

I think they just like any excuse to be in public but not have the public look at their faces. It's some kind of social anxiety or trauma they suffered when younger. They're too self conscious and not comfortable with their looks.
