Clarkson is a glorified car salesman role-playing a 'typical British lad' with his 'edgy banter' for the benefit of the proles who watch 'Top Gear', and of course for his own abundant benefit.

No big loss.

This will teach him a lesson - don't bite the hand that feeds you! And another lesson - 'if you lie down with dogs, you wake up getting your arse sniffed'.

Of course, there may be a silver lining in all of this - the big decisions in television are not made because of what the viewers think, or popularity, or even for purely commercial motivations (the petition is up to 800k signatures at this time, and will probably reach 1 million by the end of the day - and of course, 'Top Gear' is BBC's most popular show by a long margin), but for political and social motives.

And hopefully, that's what people will take from this.
