Hemet police on Friday arrested the man they accuse of violent, sexually motivated attacks on two elderly women in the same apartment complex, one of whom died. Officers closed in on the man after he tried to break into a third woman's home in the apartment complex on North Santa Fe Avenue, Hemet police Lt. Jeff Pinney reported.

Pinney had reported that the attacker raped one woman twice, first in August, then in October. In the Aug. 21 attack, the attacker allegedly beat the woman so badly, she was taken to the hospital.

The second woman, who was confined to a wheelchair, died from the injuries sustained in the Dec. 11 attack, Pinney reported.

Her death was not reported to police until Dec. 13, after an employee of the apartment complex found her, police Capt. Dave Brown said.

All of the early-morning attacks occurred at the Oak Terrace senior apartments, in the 500 block of North Santa Fe Avenue, Pinney reported.

It was at Oak Terrace at 1:37 a.m. Friday that Hemet police officers working undercover surveillance observed a man enter the complex from the northeast side, Pinney reported, who added that he jumped the fence.

Pinney reported that the man matched the description of the rapist. He generally has been described as a black man with an athletic build in his teens or 20s.

As officers moved in, police dispatch received a call from an elderly woman inside the complex that someone was trying to break into her apartment through a partially open window, Pinney reported.

Police found the man walking quickly away, and when they ordered him to stop, he fled out the front gate, Pinney reported. Officers caught him a short distance south and took him into custody after a brief struggle, according to Pinney.

The suspect was identified as Kenneth Daniels Jr., 21, of San Jacinto. He was initially arrested on charges of attempted burglary and resisting arrest.

He was then booked on charges of murder with special circumstances, two counts of rape during the commission of a residential burglary, two counts of forced oral copulation, one count of causing great bodily injury during a rape, one count of attempted burglary, and one count of resisting arrest.

Daniels is being held without bail.

Anyone with additional information about Daniels is asked to call police Detective scott Jernegan at 765-2421.
