Sagle Man Indicted in Murder-for-Hire Plot

Edgar J. Steele, 64, of Sagle, Idaho, was indicted on Tuesday by a federal grand jury sitting in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, for use of interstate commerce in the commission of murder-for-hire, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced. Steele was arrested on June 11, 2010. An initial court appearance was held on June 15, and the defendant was ordered temporarily detained by the presiding U.S. Magistrate Judge. A detention hearing is set for June 22, 2010, in Coeur d’Alene. A trial date has been set for August 16, 2010, in Coeur d’Alene before Chief U. S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill. Steele allegedly paid another person to arrange a car accident to kill Steele’s wife and Steele’s mother-in-law.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the North Idaho Violent Crime Task Force (NIVCTF). The NIVCTF consists of investigators representing the FBI, Idaho State Police, Kootenai County Sheriff's Department, Shoshone County Sheriff's Office, Bonner County Sheriff's Office, Coeur d'Alene Police Department, Post Falls Police Department, and the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Police Department, and is tasked with investigating a myriad of violent crimes to include armed robbery, kidnapping, felonious assault and drug trafficking.

An indictment is a means of charging a person with criminal activity. It is not evidence. The person is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

A redacted affidavit for this case is available on the District Court’s website.
