MACRON SHOCK: French right-wing storms ahead of centrists in EU parliament poll

FRANCE’S hard-right Rassemblement national (RN) has roared ahead of President Emmanuel Macron’s La République en Marche (LREM), two polls of voting intentions for the May 2019 European elections showed.

The May vote is already shaping up to be a vicious battle between centrist, europhile formations and anti-immigration, populist parties determined to shake up the status quo. An Ifop poll for L'Opinion published on Thursday showed Marine Le Pen’s nationalist movement with 24 percent of voting intentions, up four percentage points from a previous poll in October and two points from last month. The poll, however, showed Mr Macron’s LREM with 18 percent of voter support, down two points from October and one point from last month.

Mr Macron’s popularity has plummeted in recent weeks after a citizen-led protest movement – dubbed the “yellow vests” – against rising fuel prices quickly snowballed into a wider revolt against the young leader, whose leadership style is widely described as aloof and economic policies criticised as pro-rich and anti-poor.
