Post Sarkozy demands UK takes Calais migrants

The former French President, who is attempting a political comeback, said Britain should let migrants currently camped out in Calais into the country.

It is estimated there are up to 9,000 migrants packed into squalid conditions inside the Calais camp known as The Jungle, with many hoping to make the crossing into Britain.

Mr Sarkozy told a political rally in northern France: "I'm demanding the opening of a centre in Britain to deal with asylum seekers in Britain so that Britain can do the work that concerns them.

Mr Sarkozy said Britain should manage the asylum process, accepting those it wants on British territory and organising charters to remove those who are rejected.

He was speaking in Touquet, where in 2003, France signed a symbolic border treaty with Britain. Under Le Touquet accord, British officials can check passports in France and vice versa.

Images of hundreds of migrants trying to leap onto trucks bound for Britain and security concerns have prompted French politicians to threaten to tear up Le Touquet treaty and move the British border back across the channel.

Mr Sarkozy's conservative rival Alain Juppe, who opened his presidential bid on Saturday and is considered the frontrunner in the party's presidential primaries, has called for the treaty to be renegotiated.

Mr Sarkozy’s remarks come days after Dover and Deal MP Charlie Elphicke has submitted a report to Home Secretary Amber Rudd urging her to seek a new treaty with France to tackle the ongoing problems caused by the squalid encampment.

As well as wanting it removed, he complained that French police compound the issues by simply letting go any people traffickers or smuggled migrants that they find - thus freeing them to attempt repeated further illegal and hazardous crossings to the UK.
