Much of it is a matter of context.
If I see a white man and a black female standing together outside of an office building I don't assume they're a couple, rather just two co-workers having a smoke break.
By the same token when I see a white woman with niglets in tow I figure her for a mudshark even though the buck is nowhere to be seen.
