Default Lufthansa pilots to go on strike

Germany's flag carrier, Lufthansa is bracing itself for the largest work stoppage in almost a decade, as pilots voted to go on strike on Wednesday.

Trade union Cockpit had been looking for a one-year salary agreement with a 6.4 percent pay increase, in addition to guarantees against the outsourcing of jobs to lower-paid subsidiaries.

Delayed talks over the pay increase fell apart in December after seven months, prompting Lufthansa pilots to reach the decision to go on strike on Wednesday.

The strike is expected to affect both Lufthansa's cargo operations and its low-cost subsidiary Germanwings in what may become the largest work stoppage since a four-month strike that crippled the airline in 2001.

"It's going to be around the same scale this time," the Rheinische Post cited a Cockpit official as saying. "Small warning strikes are insufficient. The differences are too fundamental this time."

Lufthansa is reportedly preparing an emergency plan which could involve reorganizing passengers from several flights onto larger aircrafts, booking passengers on other airlines and providing train tickets.

"Only if Lufthansa makes a last-minute offer will industrial action be avoided," said a Cockpit spokesman.
