Romania eyeing 2016 IHRA chairmanship
Romania’s Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean on Thursday welcomed Personal Representative of the OSCE Chair-in-Office on Combating Anti-Semitism Rabbi Andrew Baker to whom he voiced Romania’s wish to take over the chairmanship of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) in 2016.
The Foreign Ministry (MAE) reports that discussed at the meeting were topical international affairs, including the development of anti-Semitism in Europe, as well as Romania’s commitment to combat anti-Semitism and all forms of discrimination and xenophobia.
Corlatean also reaffirmed Romania’s constant pledge inside the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to combat anti-Semitism, take responsibility for its past and condemn Holocaust denial.
Rabbi Andrew Baker is director of International Jewish Affairs at the American Jewish Committee (AJC). Throughout most of the 1990s, as director of European Affairs, Rabbi Baker promoted tolerance in the emerging democracies of Central and Eastern Europe. He was also a member on the Committee on Holocaust Studies in Romania.
