A couple days ago while referencing The Book, I ran across a passage that tickles the hell out of me whenever I read it. From page 52 of the Ralph Manheim translation:
"There were few Jews in Linz. In the course of the centuries their outward appearance had become Europeanized and had taken on a human look; in fact, I even took them for Germans." (emphasis mine)
Now, who says AH didn't have a damn fine sense of humor? Hm?...Who says so?
