Peter Sunde,35, was seized at a farm in Oxie in Skåne on Saturday. Swedish and Polish police forces worked together to apprehend him.

The Swede was sentenced to eight months in prison in 2010 for copyright violations but has yet to spend a day behind bars.

"He will serve his prison sentence. I don't have any more details on the arrest," said Carolina Ekeus of the National Police Board (Rikspolisstyrelsen) to the Expressen newspaper.

It's understood that Sunde has been living in Germany for the past few years. He had applied for a revision of his case to the Swedish Supreme Court in February but his appeal was rejected.

Sunde and his fellow Pirate Bay co-founders Fredrik Neij and Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, as well as financier Carl Lundström, were all convicted in 2009 of facilitating copyright infringement and ordered to pay 46 million kronor ($6.9 million) in damages to the music and movie industry.

Sunde later had his sentence shortened after a ruling at an appeals court.

"He's incredibly talented and I still think that the judgment was wrong," Peter Althin, who defended Sunde in the Pirate Bay trial, told the TT news agency.

He added; "You have to be at the forefront if you are going to e successful but if you are too far ahead then it's not always about success."

Fellow co-founder Gottfrid Svartholm Warg was extradited to Denmark in November 2013 to face accusations he orchestrated a hacker attack on registries belonging to the Danish police.

Financier Carl Lundström has since served his time in prison. Sunde's arrest means that just one of the three main people behind Pirate Bay remains at large. Fredrik Neij is believed to be laying low in Asia.

Founded in 2003, The Pirate Bay made it possible to skirt copyright fees and share music, film and computer game files using bit torrent technology, or peer-to-peer links offered on the site.

Despite several efforts to close it down it remains online after changing its domain name on numerous occasions.
