There's definitely something to what you're saying. It's kind of the Huck Finn thing, about civilization being a scratchy suit. Definitely man vs society comes into this when we move from the singer's specific problem to broader considerations. We all find ourselves at odds with the rules from time to time. And sometimes we may even suspect, as you say, the whole setup is designed to brainwash, hobble and veal-ize us.
When do we listen? When do we ignore?
When do we follow? When do we split off?
Not easy questions.
What determines what we do?
What is our nature? Can we make up our minds? It seems like it. But then sometimes, looking back like the singer, there does seem to be a fate unfolding; a tragic or wonderful working out that was not simply a product of decisions that could have gone a different way.
