1. According to the 2012 official statistics, 63.5% of foreigners come from the EU (= EU 27). The highest number of non-white foreigners live in German-speaking states. Also, quite some Albanians have been given citizenship...
2. Approximately, 2 million foreigners, 6 millions Swiss including 700k naturalized.

I would say this "diversity" is possible due to the federalist nature of Switzerland. Every region/state used to be a group of like-minded individuals. And when a state had problems from within it would split up like Basel (city vs countryside) and Appenzell (protestant vs catholics) [1]. There are also Nidwald and Obwald although I am not sure why they split up, I heard it was because of ethnicity (germanic vs latin people), not sure though...
Now, with the federal government being more and more centralized and the population of each state being more and more heterogeneous, tensions are beginning to appear...
[1] we could argue if this is a good thing or not... with Appenzell, we can see how christianity aims to divide Europeans.
