Thumbs down Dutch legislation to recognise lesbian parents

A soon-to-be introduced legislation will make it easier for lesbian couple to be recognised as a child’s parents.

13 August 2008

THE NETHERLANDS - Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin is introducing draft legislation which will make it easier for both members of a lesbian couple to be recognised as a child's parents.

Lesbian couples would no longer have to appear before a judge to gain such recognition.

As the law now stands, adoption procedures are used to regulate the situation of non-biological mothers within same-sex relationships. Hirsch Ballin says the interests of the child will be served by streamlining the law.
