I don’t remember whether I ever watched the whole movie or only watched fragments of it.
That there are several series on this topic I did not know until this moment.
I am not able to assess the impact of the movie on the Russian public. I don’t even know in what units of measurement it would be possible to measure the degree of such impact. Obviously it was smaller than Star Wars.
Nevertheless, there are clubs of fans of this franchise on the Internet.

And . . how 'big' is the science-fiction genre in Russia anyway . .?

I guess it is much smaller. However, somehow it is difficult for me to evaluate, since I do not belong to the number of fans of science-fiction.
I was fond of science-fiction mainly in childhood. At that time, my father bought mostly foreign science fiction books and I read them, especially Harry Harrison and Robert Sheckley.
I was greatly impressed by novel of Theodore Thomas and Kate Wilhelm
The Clone.

Are you seriously?
If you are serious, I would recommend that you stay away from Ray.
I find it hard to imagine what he will do to you for such "blasphemy" when you meet him.
