POLICE: Port St. Lucie Man Beats Dog With Sawed-Off Shotgun, Holds Its Head Under Water In Tub

By Scott T. Smith / CBS12 News

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- A 24-year-old man was arrested after severely beating his dog with a sawed-off shotgun and holding his head under water in a bathtub, then turning the gun on his girlfriend who was trying to get him to stop, police say.

Port St. Lucie police responded at noon Wednesday to 304 SE Walton Lakes Drive on a domestic disturbance report. They were met by a crying woman who said her boyfriend, Kyle Romain Hall, got mad at his dog for tearing things up in the apartment and pooping on the floor.

She said he yelled at the dog and hit him, which made the dog cry and howl, according to a police report. She said the more the dog cried, the more severely Hall attacked him. She said Hall tied the dog to a bathtub faucet and began hitting it in the head with a sawed-off shotgun. The dog's howling continued, so Hall turned on the faucet and held the dog's head under the water.

The woman said she began screaming at Hall to stop hurting the dog and her turned his attention to her, confronting her at first with a kitchen knife and then the sawed-off shotgun. She fled the apartment and called 9-1-1.

When police arrived, Hall denied all her allegations.

Police found the sawed-off shotgun behind a television in the living room.

The dog, named Scrappy, was barely conscious with swelling and severe cuts to his head. Police say Scrappy was dazed and unresponsive. Scrappy was taken to Animal Kindness Hospital for treatment.

Hall was arrested and jailed on charges of aggravated assault, possession of a short-barreled shotgun and animal cruelty.

Police seized the shotgun and a .22-caliber revolver in the home.
