The other motivating factor for religion is mortality. It is difficult for folks to face their own mortality, so most people don't until they are very ill or very old. Religion adds some comfort to people in the ending hours with hope of an afterlife.
Most Christian after life theories shouldn't be much comfort at all as they imply the majority will have ever lasting torture, usually called "hell". Death is like before you were born, total oblivion. Whether something happened year before you were born or 1000 years before it's all the same to you. Death will be the same way. You will have the same knowledge of your being as you had before you were born.
