The idea that blacks don't really have a relationship with words or however Pierce worded it in a earlier chapter is very... not sure how to put it, strange? It's hard to put yourself in that situation and think about what that really means. What that does to a creature allegedly aspiring to be a human.
There's probably something to it, though. It's not very often you come across a black man reading a book on the commute or generally just outside somewhere. Or go to one of those little shops with a lot of different magazines and papers. Completely white areas.
