Why would TPTB not just release him ?

No one out side of the internet and few there know of him IMO.
Harpham got 32 years for setting the pipe bomb on the MLK parade in Spokane. He pleaded guilty. Steele got near the minimum sentence set by Congress. The judge tacked on 10 years for the witness intimidation charge which I thought was bogus. He could have ordered that time to be served concurrently. It didn't help Steele a bit to dare the judge to set the Guinness Book of Records on his sentence. This is another proof that he was crazy.

Fairfax got a sweetheart deal by pleading guilty to manufacturing an unregistered firearm. He should have been cellmates with Steele and shared his sentence.

The San Diego pipe bomber Hoagland faces life in prison after his conviction for the pipe bombing that seriously injured and nearly killed his wife. Steele's sentence is not really out of line for what pipe bombers usually get. If Steele had plea bargained, he might have gotten out in five years or less.
