What some people don't seem to understand is that a problem in the brain can affect somebody's attitudes and disposition without turning him into a drooling idiot. Charles Whitman, the University of Texas tower sniper, had a tumor in his brain. It didn't impair his function (so far as I've read): it just made him want to kill.
There are a lot of possibilities for one mental function to be damaged while others remain intact, especially when the cause is a stroke caused by a tiny bloodclot.
