Big Tech companies to target right-wing militias & ‘attacker manifestos’ through same database used to identify terrorists

A joint ‘counterterrorism’ organization formed by Big Tech companies like Facebook and Microsoft will begin more aggressively targeting right-wing militia groups and manifestos on their platforms.

The Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) has primarily focused on videos and images released by terrorist groups identified by the United Nations, including the Taliban.

The group will be expanding the scope of material they target in the coming months, according to a report from Reuters. New material flagged will include “attacker manifestos” often linked to white supremacism, as well as right-wing and neo-Nazi militia groups allegedly posing a threat.

Google, which has a stranglehold on the internet advertising market along with Facebook, reported that its online ad revenue for the second quarter jumped 70 percent to $50.44 billion. Google’s video platform YouTube enjoyed an ad revenue jump of 83 percent last quarter, passing $7 billion.

Google’s parent company Alphabet saw an overall sales surge during Q3 of 2021, reaching nearly $62 billion up from $38 billion, beating Wall Street analyst expectations.

Google mandates vaccines for employees returning to office

Tech giant Google has declared that all of its employees returning to work in its offices will need to be vaccinated. Google’s decision comes as President Joe Biden mulls mandatory shots for all federal workers.

As the coronavirus pandemic took hold, Google sent the majority of its almost 140,000 employees home last March to work remotely. Now though, the tech giant’s campuses are reopening, and workers are returning to the office, but only once they’ve been vaccinated, CEO Sundar Pichai told his employees in an email on Wednesday.

“Anyone coming to work on our campuses will need to be vaccinated,” Pichai wrote, adding that the policy will be rolled out in the US in the coming weeks, and worldwide afterwards.

Google, Facebook and Lyft will require employees returning to offices to be vaccinated against Covid-19, the companies said in separate announcements Wednesday.

"Anyone coming to work on our campuses will need to be vaccinated. We’re rolling this policy out in the U.S. in the coming weeks and will expand to other regions in the coming months," Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a memo, adding that "getting vaccinated is one of the most important ways to keep ourselves and our communities healthy in the months ahead."

A few hours after Google's memo was released, Facebook made a similar announcement.

Bronze Age Pervert, a popular right-wing, pseudonymous author whose best-selling book reportedly became influential among staffers in the Trump administration, was suspended from Twitter on Wednesday.

Attempts to visit the author’s Twitter page were met with a notice claiming he had been permanently suspended for violating the social network’s rules – though the specific rules broken were not mentioned.

Some social media users claimed Bronze Age Pervert had been suspended for evading a previous Twitter ban. However, the author had been using his account since March 2017 and had gained over 75,000 followers before the suspension on Wednesday.

Amazon has drawn backlash on social media for being “nefarious” after offering people $10 to enroll in its controversial palm print recognition system. The tech uses biometric scanners to identify shoppers and verify payments.

The promotion, which was spotted by Tech Crunch and other industry outlets, offers customers $10 in promotional credit if they register their palm prints at the company’s check-out free stores and link it to their Amazon accounts.

The system, called ‘Amazon One’, was launched last September. It was billed as a quick, easy and “contactless” alternative to making physical cash and card payments at stores – as well as a potential identity verification service for event venues and businesses in the future.

The New York Post reports that a top communications manager at Facebook worked with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) to fight allegations of sexual misconduct. According to a recent investigation by the New York attorney general’s office, a Facebook communications manager named Dani Lever, who previously worked in Cuomo’s press operation, played a major role in suppressing the recent allegations against the governor.

Lever reportedly worked in Cuomo’s press operation since 2014 and left for Facebook in August 2020, where she assumed a communications manager role. Former Cuomo staffer Lindsey Boylan first made accusations against the governor in December 2020 and was the first of many with similar stories.

Facebook created and stored facial recognition details on 200,000 users in South Korea by harvesting info from videos and photos without consent, a data privacy audit revealed. It also illegally collected social security numbers.

The country’s personal information protection watchdog ordered Facebook to pay 6.4 billion won ($5.5 million) for the unauthorized use of user-image information for its automated facial recognition software between April 2018 and September 2019.

Announcing the preliminary findings of its privacy probe on Wednesday, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) said Facebook had “preset consent” for the feature for new profiles created on the platform.

The regulatory body also stated that users were prevented from revoking consent using the settings tool later.

The Moscow office of American tech giant Google was visited on Monday by bailiffs seeking to collect millions of rubles in fines issued by Russian courts for various violations of the country’s laws, it was revealed on Tuesday.

According to Telegram channel Mash, which obtained a video of the interaction, the bailiffs arrived at the office and were met by the receptionist, who was the only one there. She then called a lawyer, who told the officials that the building was the office of OOO Google – a Russian entity – rather than Google LLC, which is based in California.

The lawyer told the bailiffs to go to the US office to collect the fines.

“Regarding the documents, if it relates to OOO Google, which is registered in the Russian Federation, we as lawyers can accept them by proxy,” he explained. “If it concerns Google LLC, that company is in the US.”

OOO is the local equivalent of an LLC, a limited liability company.
