The Location of Amelia Earhart's Plane
It is entirely doable to search this area with current undersea technology. It just requires a backer and funding. RV Petrel, the ship that discovered all those WW2 shipwrecks in the Pacific in recent years is certainly capable of this.

I think the whole legend about Amelia Earhart being on a secret spy mission for the US, then crashing and getting captured and executed by the Japanese probably started with the 1943 film Flight For Freedom, starring Rosalind Russell. All evidence points to her and navigator Fred Noonan running out of fuel somewhere near Howland Island, ditching in the ocean and the aircraft sinking to the bottom. Sometimes Occam's Razor, the simplest explanation, is the correct one.

The movie may have started it, but it has gone way beyond that. I hope they find that thing and put all the BS to rest once and for all.

Why does it look like the plane in that photo has swept back back wings? Her plane didn't have those.

Don't know exactly why, it's a very rough sonar image. Perhaps the angle of the beam hitting the object, it could be sitting on a slope, or something to give it a swept wing look like a jet aircraft. The tail section more or less conforms to the Electra's layout with straight horizontal stabilizers and twin rudders. They need to send a submersible or unmanned underwater vehicle down there to get a better look. If the registry number NR16020 is visible, then bingo, they've found Amelia's plane.

Had she not gunned her engines over the mountains of New Guinea, she wouldn't have lost fuel. She would have arrived safely at Howland Island.

They should get Robert Ballard out there, he's the guy who found the Titanic, if I remember it right.

Anton Petrov's view on this discovery and why he is skeptical that this is Amelia Earhart's plane.
(My personal opinion: if this image is actually an aircraft, most likely it's something from WW2.)

I tend to think she most probably did land on Gardener Island as the TIGHAR group think. |
