Finland’s govt backs down on plan to lock city dwellers in their homes as proposed anti-Covid measures deemed unconstitutional

Finland's government has withdrawn a proposal to impose strict lockdowns in five cities, including the capital Helsinki. PM Sanna Marin has accepted the measures were deemed illegal by the country's constitutional law committee.

Due to objections by the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, "the government is of the opinion that… the proposal for temporary restriction of freedom of movement and close contacts must be withdrawn from the Parliament," Marin announced in a Twitter post on Wednesday.

The PM added that the Covid-19 situation remained "serious" in Finland, despite it being one of the least-affected nations in Europe. The country has so far recorded just over 76,800 cases of the disease and more than 820 deaths, and has been widely praised for its response to the highly-contagious virus.

Neil Ferguson's warning to young people over AstraZeneca vaccine blood clots risk


The disclosure came as the Netherlands followed Germany in becoming the latest country to suspend the AstraZeneca vaccine for people aged under 60 due to fears of a link with rare blood clots

Professor Neil Ferguson said the development of blood clots in people who had been given the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine raised fresh questions over whether young people should be given a jab.

The disclosure came as the Netherlands followed Germany in becoming the latest country to suspend the AstraZeneca vaccine for people aged under 60 due to fears of a link with rare blood clots.

Professor Paul Hunter, a medical microbiologist at the University of East Anglia, said the appearance of "clusters" of rare clots among people who had had the AstraZenca jab in different countries increasingly suggested it was not a "random association".

Prof Ferguson, who has had the Oxford jab, told Today: "In terms of the data at the moment, there is increasing evidence that there is a rare risk associated, particularly with the AstraZeneca vaccine but it may be associated at a lower level with other vaccines, of these unusual blood clots with low platelet counts.

"It appears that risk is age related, it may possible be - but the data is weaker on this - related to sex.

The ruling is the first time that the European Court of Human Rights has weighed in on the issue of compulsory vaccinations. The decision could play a role in efforts to end the coronavirus pandemic.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg ruled on Thursday that compulsory vaccinations would not contravene human rights law — and may be necessary in democratic societies.

The ruling came following the evaluation of a complaint brought to the court by Czech families regarding compulsory jabs for children.

"The measures could be regarded as being 'necessary in a democratic society,'" the court judgment read.

Although the ruling did not deal directly with COVID-19 vaccines, experts believe it could have implications for the vaccination drive against the virus, especially for those who have so far stated a refusal to accept the jab.

The Bundestag has passed the controversial amendments to the national Infection Protection Act that significantly tightens Covid-19 lockdown restrictions. The bill passed despite harsh criticism from the opposition.

The bill introducing new binding lockdown rules for the German states with high infection rates was approved by a narrow majority in the Bundestag on Wednesday. It received support from 342 MPs while 250 lawmakers voted against it and 64 abstained.

Some restrictions introduced by the amendments have been eased in comparison to the draft published by the German media in April.

Thousands of protesters have descended on London to protest the British government’s ongoing coronavirus restrictions. Though pubs and shops have reopened, stiff limits on gatherings remain in place.

Holding signs reading “Freedom is non-negotiable” and “No health passports,” the demonstrators gathered in the capital on Saturday. Billed by its organizers as the “biggest street party London has ever seen,” the rally drew thousands of participants unhappy with the lingering restrictions on gatherings and movement, and opposed to the government’s vague plans to introduce so-called ‘vaccine passports’.

Actor and mayoral candidate Laurence Fox, who has promised to do away with Covid-19 restrictions entirely if elected, was an enthusiastic participant. Posting videos of hordes of people marching through the streets, he decried the “total corruptstream media blackout” of the protest.

Dozens of people due to be vaccinated against Covid-19 using the Pfizer-BioNtTech jab were injected with normal saline instead as the result of an unexplained blunder by French medical workers.

Some 140 people who attended the vaccination center at Reims University Hospital in the town of Epernay, 130km northeast of Paris, erroneously received injections on Tuesday.

The injections contained normal saline, which is a harmless solution of sodium chloride dissolved in water. It can be applied externally to clean wounds and help with dry eyes, or it can be injected to treat dehydration, among other conditions. The error is therefore not expected to result in any serious health consequences.

Canadian health officials report 1st death caused by blood clot in AstraZeneca Covid vaccine recipient

A 54-year-old woman in Quebec has died from a blood clot after receiving AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine, the province's public health chief Horacio Arruda has said. It is the first such fatality in Canada.

"We just had our first patient who has died of a thrombosis, cerebral thrombosis, following vaccination from AstraZeneca," Arruda told a news briefing on Tuesday.

Speaking about the fatality, Quebec Premier Francois Legault said he was "very sad to know that a 54-year-old woman in good shape... died because she was vaccinated."

Arruda said tests at McMaster University laboratory in Hamilton had discovered antibodies which had caused a problem with platelets in her blood, which led to her death.

The Swedish county of Kalmar has started charging lost costs to those who refuse to take the AstraZeneca vaccine when they turn up to their appointments.

Residents who refused the vaccine in the southern Swedish county out of concern about potential side-effects — widely discussed in the European mainstream media and by European governments in recent weeks — say they were charged 200 Swedish kronor (£17/$24) each when they refused to accept the AstraZeneca shot at the time of their scheduled vaccination appointment.

One couple who refused the vaccine earlier this month received a letter invoicing them for the appointment costs and have since filed a complaint with the Ombudsman for Justice (JO) over the matter, broadcaster SVT reports.

Denmark will not include Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine in its Covid immunization program over blood-clot concerns, according to media reports. Authorities in Denmark are being extra cautious and excluding AstraZeneca’s vaccine too.

Multiple local media outlets reported the news on Monday, citing unnamed sources.

Johnson & Johnson’s shot was temporarily suspended in the US and EU last month amid reports that a number of people developed rare blood clots after taking the jab. Deliveries on both sides of the Atlantic have since resumed, except for in the UK, which never approved the vaccine in the first place.

The World Health Organization (WHO) approved for emergency use a COVID-19 vaccine from China's state-owned drugmaker Sinopharm on Friday, bolstering Beijing's push for a bigger role in inoculating the world.

The Institute of Public Health in Norway has recommended against the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, adding to a recommendation of permanently avoiding the use of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 jab over side effect fears.

In a press release on Monday, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) advised the government against the use of the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 jab, following guidance from a government-appointed commission. The committee also supported an earlier recommendation by the NIPH not to use the AstraZeneca shot.

“We do not recommend that the vaccines be used in the national vaccination program due to the serious side effects that have been seen,” Lars Vorland, chair of the expert committee, said at a press conference on Monday.
