Before Gilligan's Island, Russell Johnson played a serious role as Marshal Gib Scott in the TV Western, Black Saddle:

Hans Gudegast (Colossus) was a good German actor, and changed his name to Eric Braeden because of anti-German feelings. He's on some soap opera now, and always did good work. He was also on Rat Patrol, and insisted his character, A German officer, be played with dignity and fairness. He refused to wear an eyepatch, which was what the show wanted, and he was always thoughtful and correct. None of the master race stuff. He was a soldier doing his duty.

Contrast that with the Jews on Hogan's Heroes playing Nazis.

I liked Anne Francis in Honey West. It was ahead of its time. She's always fun to watch. Also, quite fond of Forbidden Planet, although a novel written based on the movie is much better. Far deeper characterization and fairly good science as well as psychology, also told through first-person by three characters. Read it if you can find a copy.

Fireball XL5. Wow, I used to watch it all the time, and there were other shows like that by the same group. One was Supercar, with Mike Mercury flying a guess what? Also there was another rocketship show, not Thunderbirds.
I note all these shows had to do with rocketships and travel...probably the easiest way to sell a kid's show, and also easy to do with marionettes. I noticed the cast was always very small...imagine doing crowd scenes with forty marionettes. Need a lot of hands for that.

Fireball also had a geezer kind of professor, and Venus had some kind of humanoid pet. He only said 'welcome home' in a tinny voice. I still like to say that to myself.

I remember some trade mag of the era wondered why, if Steve Zodiac had Venus, why didn't Mike Mercury have a girlfriend? He had a kid sidekick, a monkey named Mitch, and the inevitable team of fuddy-duddy scientists, but that isn't enough.

In the mid-sixties, these things mattered.
And yes, what a lovely, all white world.

A seemingly more pleasant era, and in many ways it genuinely was. Even so, this wholesome TV family had an uglier reality to the fictional characters they played...

Anisa Jones, the little girl on the right (above) OD'ed on drugs at the age of 18. Johnny Whitaker, the boy who played her brother on Family Affair, also got hooked on drugs. He was wasted for years, then finally kicked his habit. Today he's a drug counselor - but a drug counselor specifically counseling Southern California beaners hooked on drugs. (fuck whitey in other words)

The teenage girl who played "Cissy", the older sister on Family Affair is still alive today and looking good at age 74:

Brian Keith had a long movie and TV career, and appeared in some notable movies alongside such big stars as James Stewart and Steve McQueen, among others. He even appeared in this 1955 magazine ad for Camel cigarettes:

Later, after the TV series Family Affair ended, Brian Keith learned he had emphesema from all his years of smoking Camels. On top of that, he was informed in 1997 that his daughter Daisy committed suicide. Depressed over her death and wracked by emphysema, he blew his motherfuckin' brains out two months later...

Just who - or what - was "Coronet Blue"? To this day, nobody ever found out after this one season 60's show bit the dust. But here's a clip from one episode featuring the star (Frank Converse) with guest stars Jon Voight, Candace Bergen, and David Carradine:

Speaking of David Carradine, what's everyone's opinion of Kung Fu? Do you think it was anti-White? His character, Caine, was half-White, half-Chinese, after all.

I was never a fan of the show, and watched maybe 2 1/2 episodes over the course of its run. Was it anti-white? Indirectly, yes - since it was clearly anti-European settler who "stole the land from the Injuns". That was the concurrent theme throughout the series. White man bad - Injun good, keep your mouth shut racist, niggas takin' over da hood. That was the message. And the constant slooooooow-motion Kung Fu fightin', dat chink be fast as lightning, fight scenes got on my nerves real quick. I always though David Carradine had an air of sleaziness about him. Not sure why, but he did. On the other hand I liked his dad John Carradine, and also his half-brother Keith - who was also a better actor. Not to say that David Carradine didn't have his moments. Here and there he did.

His real first name was John - same as his father's. But SAG forbids two actors having exactly the same name, unless they add a Jr. or an initial in the mix. David Carradine's middle name was Arthur, but I guess he didn't like that for a first name. So he chose David, which doesn't match his full legal name: John Arthur Carradine.

The Kung Fu fight scenes were reminiscent of The Six Million Dollar Man when Lee Majors went all bionic on us. As a kid in the 1970s I thought the show was cool of course, as in the Steve vs. Sasquatch video below. But today, I see this:

Steve Austin's bionics cost six million dollars.

Steve worked for the CIA-like OSI--Office of Scientific Investigation. There was a real agency called Office of Special Investigation, one of whose jobs was to track down "Nazi war criminals" after WW2.

Steve's boss at OSI was named Oscar Goldman, played by Richard Anderson.

In this video Bigfoot is played by former pro wrestler Andre The Giant. In later episodes Ted Cassidy (Lurch from The Addams Family) took over the role.

Purple wigs and silver miniskirts: Hot SHADO girls--especially Gabrielle Drake.

"You-foe approaching, twenty millions miles." (in sexy British accent)

Maybe the new Space Force would consider these outfits for female personnel...

Yes, she was.

And after the show ended, she did "other" things:

And though I liked Gabrielle Drake, I actually preferred Wanda Ventham:

According to the YouTube comments, Gabrielle Drake acted in soft porn. And Wanda Ventham is Benedict Cumberbatch's mother.

I always considered UFO a prequel to Space: 1999 since both shows had the same producer (Gerry Anderson), same SFX producer (Derek Meddings), same music (Barry Gray), similar visual look, Rudi Gernreich (a homo, I know)-designed costumes, etc.

I didn't know that. He certainly had a good-looking one.

And shortly before UFO or Space:1999 hit the TV screen, Gerry Anderson and Derek Meddings teamed up to bring this movie to the big screen:

And 1969's Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun was ripped off from this 1963 TV episode:

Finally, Gerry Anderson's actual name was "Gerald Alexander Abrahams". So, yes, he was a Jew.

I did like that movie, anyway. Lynn Loring was a hottie too, and of course, Roy Thinnes starred in The Invaders.

Going back a couple pages in this thread, The Starlost reminded me of the Star Trek episode 'For The World Is Hollow And I Have Touched The Sky' where the inhabitants both forgot they were on a spaceship. I guess there are only so many ideas writers can come up with before they resemble someone else's work in some manner.

Yes, it was certainly similar. And it also seems like everybody (Wanda Ventham, etc) in either Hollywood (or the UK) knows - and marries - everyone else. As in the case of Kate Woodville (ruler of the Fabrini, lower left, kneeling) who was married to the star (lower right) of this British TV show during her Star Trek appearance:

Anyone remember this show?

It ran on NBC in 1977-78 which featured space garbage hauler Adam Quark (Richard Benjamin) and his crew as they spoof various sci-fi such as Star Trek and Star Wars. Personally, I liked the Betties, played by twin sisters Patricia and Cybbie Barnstable.

You know, I'm having a very hard time deciding which Mrs. Peel looked better in the bodysuit, Diana Rigg's or Uma Thurman's from the 1998 movie. Personally, I'll go with Uma Thurman because she's taller (5'11''), and one of the sexiest women ever, even though I like The Avengers TV series much better than the movie.

I've never seen the movie version of the series. Uma Thurman may be "sexier" but I much prefer the original "Mrs. Peel" - Diana Rigg. But before Rigg was the original, original "Mrs. Peel" - who played under the name "Cathy Gale". Here she is:

And later on, switched from TV to movies, as James Bond's seductive enemy:

"Would you like some pussy, Mr. Bond?"

Back in the 80s, this show ran on some channel on my parents' cablevitz. I think it was called Nick at Night. It was from before I was born. I actually liked it.

Diana Riggs was not Pussy Galore. That was Honor Blackman. She was his wife in the flick that is usually hated. Having an Aussie as Bond is almost as bad as casting an American.
