French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted in solidarity with people of Lebanon following the massive explosion in its capital. It did not go over well and just reminded critics of the troubled history the two countries share.

On Thursday Macron became the first international leader to visit Beirut, which was literally“devastated” by the blast in the city’s port on Tuesday, as local authorities put it. It was supposed to be a gesture of goodwill and the beginning of an international aid effort. The French leader himself said that he aims to “organize European cooperation and, more broadly, international cooperation.”

“Lebanon is not alone,” Macron tweeted in both Arabic, and French – the two main languages of the country.

But not everyone online could take the sentiment seriously, especially coming from Macron. It was pointed out that France has for a long time been close with Israel, and is still selling weapons to the country, which had a gruesome war with Lebanon in 2006.

Some called out hypocrisy in Macron’s supposedly heartfelt message on Twitter, reminding of his ongoing support for Israel “which bombed Lebanon several times."

A harrowing assault has shaken France's Le Havre, where a restaurant waiter received a grave stab wound for asking a customer to put his mandatory face mask on before entering a beachfront restaurant.

Wearing a face covering is obligatory in public places across France, but defending the rule, or reminding people about it, may spark a drama such as the one that occurred in the port city of Le Havre this Wednesday.

In the late afternoon, a 29-year-old Afghan man burst into a local restaurant overlooking a serene seaside beach. The visitor – drunk and not wearing a mask – was met by a waiter who “asked him to put one on,” local media reported, citing the police.

The brief altercation was apparently a prelude to violence. The man left the restaurant for a while before returning and stabbing the waiter with a knife.

French President Emmanuel Macron is committed to pushing through the reforms he’s proposed for Lebanon, an Elysee official has said, as he prepares for his second visit to the country in less than a month.

“The president has said he will not give up. He made a commitment to do what needs to be done and to apply the necessary pressure to put this program in place,” a French presidential official told reporters on Friday.

Macron has called for the appointment of an interim government in Lebanon, an audit of the country’s central bank, and legislative elections within a year. He has argued that these conditions must be met before the country can receive badly needed foreign aid.

A horrific explosion in Beirut earlier this month worsened the country’s deep economic and political problems, and prompted violent demonstrations. As a result, Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab dissolved his government on August 10, but President Michel Aoun has been slow to create a new administration. Starting on Monday, Aoun will hold parliamentary consultations to select a new prime minister.

In an eye-popping display of neo-colonialism, France’s president flies into Beirut to team up with Fairouz, an elderly, much-loved singing icon, and orders political parties to stand aside and let him set up a new government.

While colonialism brought democracy and modernity to many nations, there is nothing more embarrassing than a former colonial power that doesn’t know when it’s time to let go.

The colonist is like a drunken ex-lover who turns up at the home of his one-time mistress, banging on the door and pledging undying love through the letterbox while his old flame, who has moved on, tries to explain the situation as her new husband informs the interloper, “You’re no longer wanted here!”

That spurned lover is the president of France, Emmanuel Macron. His former mistress is Lebanon.

But nothing can deter L'empereur. Having cosied up nice and tight with Germany, so that the Franco-German axis now definitely runs the show in the European Union, Macron has moved his attention to the trouble-torn Middle East.

Lebanon, which enjoyed the fruits of having France as its colonial power for around 23 years, before winning independence in 1943, is in a mess.

The country’s entire governing cabinet resigned after the recent and catastrophic bomb blast at the Beirut port, blamed on a store of ammonium nitrate left for years in a warehouse, and it needs to get back on its feet quickly.

Macron threatens Lebanon with sanctions unless Beirut brings about ‘real change’ in three months

Paris will slap Lebanese elites with sanctions and could even withhold crucial financial aid if Beirut fails to implement reforms, the French president has warned.

The upcoming months would be “fundamental” for what he described as “real change,” Macron told Politico as he was heading to Beirut for a second visit in a month. Should he be not satisfied with the reforms made within the set period of time, punitive measures will follow, he added.

The list of such measures ranges from personal sanctions against members of the Lebanese political elite, to blocking an international financial bailout - vital for a country gripped by a prolonged economic and political crisis, and struggling with the aftermath of the recent major explosion in the capital.

More Arabic will be taught in French schools and extra resources will be directed at studying the Muslim civilization, the country's leader Emmanuel Macron said. The measures are part of the strategy to fight Islamic radicalism.

In his speech on Friday, the president highlighted the importance of preventing radicalization in the country's Muslim communities. He said that “more Arabic language will be taught in schools or as part of extended day programs.” Macron explained that authorities must put an end to young people learning the language “from groups that offer them the worst and manipulate them.”

“Arabic, just like many other languages, is a treasure of our children, of their families,” Macron said, stressing that the state must support “the emergence of a better understanding of Islam.”

The president announced that the government will create the “Scientific Institute of Islamology” along with new positions in higher education to conduct research on “the Muslim civilization, the Mediterranean Sea region and Africa.” On top of that, more funding will go to the Foundation of Islam for France, which was established in 2016 to promote “progressive Islam,” according to its mission statement.

Standing in front of their businesses at 11:45am local time, wearing black armbands and making a furore using pots and pans, the proprietors and staff of restaurants, bars, and cafes urged Emmanuel Macron’s government not to tighten Covid-19 restrictions further.

They believe that restaurants are not to blame for the spike in coronavirus cases and fear the impact of further restrictions on the hospitality industry. Some establishments expressed their disapproval via Twitter, declaring “we must stay open,” and pleading, “let us work.”

Far-right politician Marine Le Pen would beat Emmanuel Macron in first round of French elections, new poll suggests

(JTA) — A new poll of French voters suggests that Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally Party, is growing in popularity since the 2017 elections.

If France’s 2022 presidential elections were held now, Le Pen would beat President Emmanuel Macron and all other rivals in the first round. But in a subsequent runoff of the top two candidates, Macron would still win handily, as he did in 2017.

In the poll of 1,805 French voters published Sunday in Le Journal du Dimanche, Le Pen received between 24% to 27% of the vote, depending on who she would theoretically face. Macron, the runner-up, had 23% to 26%. The poll has a 1.8% margin of error.

A knife attack in which three people were killed in Nice on Thursday morning was perpetrated by an Islamist terrorist, French President Emmanuel Macron said while visiting the city. He said the country was “under attack.”

Two people were killed inside a Catholic church in the southern French city, according to local reports, while a third person managed to escape from the attacker but later succumbed to their injuries.

The suspect was shot by police and injured. He has been taken to hospital.

France Beheading Terrorist Revealed to be Boat Migrant Who Arrived Via Italy;

The terrorist who beheaded a woman and killed two others near a church in Nice, France has been revealed to be a Tunisian boat migrant who arrived on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa last month.

The attack followed the beheading of Samuel Paty earlier this month, a school teacher who was targeted as part of a revenge attack for showing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad to pupils in a class about free speech.

It’s now confirmed that the jihadist in Nice, who yelled “Allahu Akbar” during the attack, arrived in Europe as a boat migrant.

“He entered France from Italy – travelling through the southern Italian city of Bari on 9 October – after reaching the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa on 20 September,” reports Sky News.

“He was carrying an Italian Red Cross identity document, and a bag containing two unused knives was found.”

Other sources name the terrorist as 21-year-old Brahim A., saying he was rescued by an Italian rescue boat on September 20 and placed in quarantine due to COVID.

The Tunisian had apparently been subject to an expulsion order by Italian authorities but was able to travel to France via Bari.

This is at least the fourth time that migrants arriving in France as “refugees” have gone on to commit terrorism.

The Chechen teen who beheaded school teacher Samuel Paty earlier this month had been granted a 10-year residency in France as a refugee in March.

The majority of the Paris massacre terrorists exploited the refugee wave to enter Europe.

The three terrorists who went on a knife rampage in Lyon back in April were also Sudanese refugees.
