February 14, 2020

Several Internet bookstores in the Czech Republic have had the antisemitic children’s book “The Toadstool” on offer for years. It is a work by Ernst Hiemer, editor-in-chief of the Nazi campaign sheet “Der Stürmer” in the Third Reich. The police are investigating.

Light at end of tunnel for Czech services as government drops COVID pass

By Jiri Skacel
February 10, 2022

PRAGUE, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Czech restaurant and hotel operators saw light at the end of the tunnel on Thursday as the government cancelled rules requiring vaccination certificates to enter restaurants and events as Omicron infections started to ebb.

Hotels and restaurants in Prague, a prime tourist destination, have suffered badly throughout the pandemic and now hope restrictions will not come back.

"The relaxation means guests can come without any restriction or persecution, that's of course welcome... This has been long for everyone, not just us in gastronomy but the entire society," said Tomas Lachman, a manager at Oblaca Restaurant at Prague's TV tower, 66 metres above the city.

Czechs to give impunity to nationals fighting for Ukraine

Published: 03 March, 2022: 10:29 PM GST
Updated: 03 March, 2022: 11:49 PM GST

Czech nationals will have the chance to join Ukraine's defence forces to battle Russia's invasion without fear of punishment at home, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said on Thursday.

Under Czech law, it is illegal to join foreign armed forces without an exemption from the president who is the commander-in-chief of the Czech army. Violations are punishable by up to five years in prison.

CTK news agency reported this week at least 300 people had sought an exemption to answer Ukraine's call for foreign volunteers to fight Russia's invasion.

Czech president to award state honour to Ukraine's president

Reuters
March 7, 2022

PRAGUE, March 7 (Reuters) - Czech President Milos Zeman, long sympathetic to Moscow, said on Monday he would award the highest state honours to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy for his bravery and courage in the face of Russia's invasion.

Zeman has supported closer ties with Russia since taking office in 2013 but called Russian President Vladimir Putin a "madman" at the outset of Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24.

Czech Republic takes in more than 100,000 Ukrainian refugees so far

Reuters
March 7, 2022

PRAGUE, March 7 (Reuters) - More than 100,000 Ukrainian refugees have arrived in the Czech Republic, the Interior Ministry said on Monday, as the country and others in central Europe step up efforts to take in the influx of people fleeing after Russia's invasion.

At least 1.7 million have fled Ukraine since the Feb. 24 invasion, with most crossing into the European Union in eastern Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and northern Romania.

The Czech ministry said that of the people who have continued to the Czech Republic, around 57,000 have already received special visas, with more than half of those children.

Czech PM says Ukraine needs more weapons after leaders meet Zelenskyy in Kyiv

By Vanessa Gera and Karel Janicek The Associated Press
Posted March 16, 2022 10:45 am

The prime ministers of Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia safely returned to Central Europe on Wednesday after visiting Kyiv to show support for Ukraine as it defends itself from Russia’s military invasion.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala called on as many countries as possible to equip Ukraine with large amounts of weapons quickly so the country can continue fighting off Russian forces that are trying to take the capital and other cities.

“We have to realize that (the Ukrainians) also fight for our independence, for our freedom and we have to support them,” Fiala said after arriving back in Prague. “That’s the reason why we traveled there, to show them they’re not alone.”

He and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki of Poland and Prime Minister Janez Jansa of Slovenia met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during their trip to Kyiv on Tuesday, when sustained Russian shelling targeted the city and its suburbs.

Czech Republic Gives Ukraine Attack Helicopters

By Drew Hinshaw

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin at a news conference Monday.MICHAEL REYNOLDS/SHUTTERSTOCK

WARSAW—The Czech Republic has donated attack helicopters to Ukraine, and, along with Slovakia, has allowed Ukraine's military to send dozens of armored vehicles across their borders for repairs, before returning to the conflict, a significant escalation in Western support for the country in its fight with Russia.

The helicopters—Soviet-designed Mi-24 gunships—were deployed to Ukraine in recent weeks, part of a broader effort to help the country reclaim parity in its own airspace. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin thanked the Czechs for their donation during public comments after a meeting of allied defense officials Monday.

The gifts make the Czech Republic—which in April became the first NATO country to report donating tanks to Ukraine—the first to give Ukraine attack helicopters as well.

Russia’s war on Ukraine will shape the Czech EU presidency

By KAREL JANICEK
June 15, 2022

PRAGUE (AP) — Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and what Europe must do to counter the consequences of that have become the key task for the Czech Republic’s upcoming presidency of the 27-nation European Union.

The Czech Republic’s motto for the six-month presidency, which it takes over from France on July 1, is “Europe as a Task: rethink, rebuild, repower,” based on a 1996 speech by the late Czech President Vaclav Havel.

“Europe and the whole world have been undergoing a crucial change,” Prime Minister Petr Fiala said Wednesday as he introduced his country’s priorities. “The Russian invasion have shaken many our certainties.”

The country has pledged to use the rotating presidency of the Council, which sets and moderates the EU’s political agenda, to help Ukraine in all possible ways. The Czechs are among Eastern European countries that warmly support speeding up Ukraine’s EU membership bid.

PRAGUE, July 20 (Reuters) - The Czech government agreed on Wednesday to open talks with the United States on supplies of the F-35 Lightning II fighter jets made by Lockheed Martin Corp to replace leased Gripen fighters from Sweden's Saab AB, Prime Minister Petr Fiala said.

The NATO member country will also lead talks to buy fighting vehicles from a Swedish subsidiary of BAE Systems (BAES.L) after cancelling a tender for the supplies.

"This is another step to modernise the army and meet our alliance commitments," Fiala told a news conference shown live on television.

"These are important decisions at a time when the security of Europe and the Czech Republic faces new challenges caused by Russia's aggression in Ukraine."

Thousands of Czechs Protest in Central Prague Over Energy Crisis

Tens of thousands of Czechs protested in Prague against the government to demand more state help with rising energy bills, the largest manifestation of public discontent over the worst cost-of-living crisis in three decades.

About 70,000 people filled Wenceslas Square in the center of the Czech capital on Saturday, according to police estimates, with some carrying signs denouncing the country’s membership of the European Union and the NATO military alliance.

Members of extreme political groups that demand exit from the EU and NATO, including the far-right Freedom and Solidarity and the Communist Party, were scheduled to speak at the rally, according to the organizers’ website.

An online petition posted on the website called for securing cheap natural gas supplies via a direct contract with Russia, military neutrality and more support for Czech businesses. It also rejected permanent settlement of Ukrainian refugees in the Czech Republic.

Pimps luring Ukrainian women into prostitution – media

Young, single mothers are being targeted for recruitment into the sex trade in the Czech Republic, local media claims

Pimps in the Czech Republic are luring Ukrainian refugee women into prostitution, with some even being “recruited” at the borders, Czech outlet Lidovky reported earlier this month, citing local sex workers’ aid groups.

“Most often they get into the sex business because of financial difficulties,” Zdenka Pekharova, coordinator for advocacy group Association for the Protection of Women, told the outlet, explaining that her organization had been tipped off about suspicious ads on erotic websites advertising Ukrainian women for a quarter of the price of local girls. The organization had previously reported that some women were even being “recruited” into prostitution at the border.

While the police were unable to confirm any criminal offense had been committed, Pekharova insists Ukrainian women are being victimized by pimps, and she recently submitted another report to the police after finding more suspicious ads.

Major protest in EU capital calls for direct gas talks with Russia

Prague rally demands resignation of government, decrying its support for Kiev and anti-Russia sanctions

Tens of thousands of demonstrators filled Prague's central square, on Friday, to decry rampant inflation amid the Czech government’s support for anti-Russia sanctions and aid packages to Ukraine.

They called for direct gas talks with Moscow and the resignation of Prime Minister Petr Fiala and his cabinet. Participants chanted “resign, resign” while waving Czechian national flags.

The latest rally follows two similar protests last month, including one that reportedly attracted an estimated 70,000 people.

The crowd in Wenceslas Square demanded an end to Czechia’s participation in anti-Russia sanctions over the Ukraine crisis, which have contributed to soaring energy and food prices.

Czech government delegation holds talks in Kyiv

10/31/2022

Czech and Ukrainian government ministers met for talks in Kyiv on Monday, despite continued bombing of the capital and other parts of the country by Russian forces. The working visit by the Czech government delegation led by Prime Minister Petr Fiala was intended to demonstrate continuing support for Ukraine and ascertain the country’s present needs, at a time when Czechia is presiding over the European Union. They also discussed plans for the post-war reconstruction of the country. The two sides signed memoradums on cooperation in several areas.

Prime Minister Fiala said Czechia would continue to give Ukraine military and humanitarian support to help the country defend itself and restore its territorial integrity. Mr. Fiala said Ukraine belongs in the EU and NATO, adding that he was impressed by the way that the country is working to fulfil the conditions for accession, be it in the legal sphere, the fight against corruption and others.

Another sign Europe’s conservative alliance between Hungary, Poland, and Czechia is dead

Conservatives across Europe are split over the war in Ukraine, with the Visegrád Four (V4) increasingly looking like an alliance only in name

November 18, 2022
editor: REMIX NEWS author: DENES ALBERT

Poland and Czechia are once again pressuring Hungary and putting the Visegrád Four (V4) alliance under threat over Hungary’s stance on the war in Ukraine — despite Hungary being one of the few countries that has backed them in the past on key issues like migration and national sovereignty. This time, Poland and Czechia canceled a meeting of the Visegrád Four countries’ parliamentary leaders in the Slovakian capital of Bratislava.

The move comes after a long series of hostile statements and gestures against Hungary from its former allies, which have led to an unraveling of the conservative alliance that once served as a counterbalance to the left-liberal establishment in Brussels, Paris, and Berlin.

Czech Parliament Speaker Markéta Pekarová Adamová and Czech Senate President Milos Vystrcil indicated they were boycotting the V4 meeting, with the Czech newspaper Seznam Zprávy reporting that they did not want to sit at the same table with the Hungarians. The paper added that in addition to the two Czech politicians, the leaders of the two chambers of the Polish Sejm would not attend the meeting either.

The Czech paper wrote that the boycott was due to disagreements between the V4 member states on their approach to the war in Ukraine.

Hungarian Speaker of the House László Kövér Kövér expressed his regret for the cancellation but said the Czech and Polish decision to stay away from the meeting was based on a distorted view of the facts.

“The remarks made by the speakers of the Czech parliament regarding our country are untruthful and disrespectful, do not correspond to the facts, and call into question the right of the Hungarian government to shape its policy in the Hungarian national interest,” Kövér said, according to a statement.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has refused to send weapons to Ukraine or allow weapon transports through his territory, stressing that Hungary wants no part in the war. The country’s government has called for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations. In addition, Orbán has argued on numerous occasions that sanctions against Russia are harming Europeans more than Russians and that sanctions should be dropped by the end of the year, likely a stance that has landed Orbán on a Ukrainian “kill list” and earned the scorn of war hawks in Poland and Czechia.

Czechia’s frightening increase in food prices

On Oct. 4, all supermarkets in Germany raised the price of sugar, and Czech retailers simply copied the price of their neighbors

November 21, 2022
editor: REMIX NEWS author: REMIX NEWS STAFF

Czechia may produce much of its own food, but that has not stopped the country from seeing a dramatic increase in food prices. On top of the usual suspects such as rising energy prices, part of the problem for Czechs is that a substantial amount of that domestically produced food is exported abroad.

Food prices rose by more than a quarter in the Czech Republic in October. This was not only due to soaring energy prices but also partly because Czech stores copy prices in Germany, which has also seen an explosive growth in food prices this year.

The data shows just how bad food inflation in Czechia has become. The country experienced the largest percentage rise in sugar prices in Europe; the second-largest in vegetable oils; and the third-largest price increase in butter, milk, and bread.
